"It Does Have a Memory Card Slot!!!" on by kbharlow

Pros: Slim, Stylish, Display Options, 8GB MicroSDHC Slot, Stereo Bluetooth

Cons: Buttons take some getting used to, not QVGA, no flash wallpaper

Summary: CNet's review seems to have been done in haste, and hasn't given this phone it's due look. It clearly has a microSD slot on the side of the phone that is hidden by the battery cover. It is actually quite a good idea, because it leaves the side of the phone looking less junked up. The cover isn't hard to get take off, either, like the reviewer states. Both displays are better than my old LG VX8300, but they probably aren't standard for today's new hotness. The bronze color contrasts very well with the blue mirror finish, and makes for a stylish design, in my opinion. There are a multitude of a display options, compared to my last phone, including VZ Navigator already installed, and voice read-out of menus and text messages. I will agree that the camera is sub-par, but for the price, you really have to be aware that you aren't paying for top-notch quality.

The U550 is, in my opinion, VZW's top mid-range phone in their current lineup. Anyone looking for a new, feature-laden phone, without breaking the bank, should look its way.

"Excellent for the price" on by xyidine

Pros: Excellent big bright display, supports 8gb micro cards, picture quality above average

Cons: Keypad feels off, you have to get used to it, sound quality takes a dive when service is less than 3 bars

Summary: This phone is absolutely amazing for its price. Yes there are higher end phones out there, but for the $20 I spent, you can't go wrong here. It has all the features of a camera/video/music phone, including some updated ones, such as being able to change the menus to icons or a list. Music sounds fine for being played out of a phone. I've heard better but still.

There is a huge improvement in sound quality over my old Vx 5200, as well as the phone being able to find service in alot more places. Simply a great phone for those of you that are money concious, but still want a phone with features.

"A fine phone. C/Net was having a bad day" on by Lt-Kije

Pros: Everything works well. Wanted a basic upgrade phone that took a memory card, that I could drag and drop MP3's to, and stream them to a Bluetooth stereo headset. It does all this. S9 headset sound is good. Wired headset sound is very good.

Cons: Bluetooth stereo is choppy and very sensitive to where the phone is.
Shirt and pants pocket do not work well with my motorola S9 headset.

Summary: I've had the phone for a week. It replaced a Razr V3M. Took a while to get comfortable with the Motorola S9 headset and pairing. It does not always behave as documented. It now seems stable after a lot of RTFM.

C/Net dished out an unfair bad rap for an inexpensive phone and nearly convinced me to pay for a more expensive phone.

It does have a MicroSD card slot. The key pad does is not dead flat and it has a good feel. The screen is perfectly fine. The design is fine (I like the square watchface dial on the outside screen - much better than a digital face with another verizon logo behind it). Have no comment on the camera and video. The short cut menu is good (shame you have to open the phone to get at it)

The battery cover is a ***** to remove. (Hold the phone flat between your palms, press them together, and slide the cover back - easy when you know how).

I wanted phone that played MP3's and did not require me dick around with Media Player.

Can't imagine why Samsung did not implement a USB connector for the charger, and interface to the PC - get a grip guys.

Net / Net - a perfectly fine phone with a few minor drawbacks.

And Verizon does need to get out of the menu design business - and I look forward to Verizon GSM - time to bury CDMA guys.

    "Basic phone" on by ver-ripoff

Pros: Can adjust settings receive well over a hundred texts.

Cons: Slow camera shudder, no flash
If you like to text it will let you RECEIVE ones with multiple slide Pics but will NOT let you send them!!!

Summary: According to research online I've heard many gripes with the newer samsungs recently. I come to find out VERIZON told samsung to make the phones so you can NOT send/forward multiple pic slideshows so people without a plan have to send multiple pictures costing them MORE money. Meanwhile..those WITH plans can't forward anyt funny forwards received or even make a slide show to send others! VERIZON..YOU SUCK and Samsung...LAST PHONE I GET FROM YOU!

    "Beautiful phone" on by berdwa

Pros: Beautiful phone, very stylish, love the analog clock design, great screen

Cons: Microphone placement; tapered design; flat keypad; chintzy charger cover; and the back cover is difficult to remove to get to the micro sd slot

Summary: I really want to like this phone, but I think the cons are going to send me back to the Verizon store after only a few days. I have fairly big hands and the tapered design makes the phone very awkward to hold in one hand to dial or text. While entering my contact, my palm got sore from having to pinch the phone and I ended up holding it with one hand and entering text in another. That never happened with my old Razr V3m.

The microphone is off center and my finger often ends up obstructing the microphone -- again, perhaps an issue of having large hands.

As in the CNET review, the phone does have a very flat keypad, making dialing without looking somewhat difficult. Also the cover is hard to remove to get to the micro sd slot.

I'm going to give it a week, but after only 2 days, I'm almost ready to return it.

    Updated
Over the course of a couple of weeks I learned to live with all the cons I listed in my other review. What drove me to finally return it was the voice activation integration with the Motorola H700 bluetooth headset I use. The volume was so low that I couldn't hear the prompts, though the actual call volume was fine. There was no way to adjust it if 3 or 4 Verizon techs are to be believed. I certainly couldn't find a way other than jacking the volume on my headset for the menu and then trying to turn it down in time so that the call ring wouldn't pierce my ear. I went with the LG VX8350. Though it isn't as flashy looking and is missing a means to lock the music buttons, the core performance is better and it works with my headset. After only two weeks of light use it became apparent that the Samsung's shiny face would soon attract scratches as mine started to (no I didn't keep it in a pocket with keys).

All in all, I really wanted to like that phone, but it just fell short in a key area.
