"A pretty good phone overall...."
Pros: small size, programmable menus
Cons: screen resolution poor, short battery life
Summary: This phone replaced my Motorola Razor (which was the most unreliable phone I have had). The 737 is very compact. The sliding design is a lot easier than the Razor flip design which was rather awkward with one hand. While the phone is a bit unbalanced to use when it is closed (the controls are rather tightly packed on the bottom), ergonomics is a lot better when the phone is open.
If you have only nine people you normally call, you can program the speed dial and use the phone without sliding the phone open. the contact list is about as easy to.
you can program the primary menu in any order you want, so you can have the speed dial on the top, next have the call received, settings, camera, etc in the order you want. you just hit the menu button and scroll down to your selection and press enter. very handy as you do not have to slide the phone open.
the camera itself is only 1.3MP and is only adequate. the video camera mode is mediocre, any sudden movement pixelizes the image quite a bit. the camera function is awkward as it requires a few presses of the menus to access and then takes a couple of seconds to initialize. switching between still and video or vice versa also adds a few seconds, so candid shots are definitely out.
the screen is only 220x170 in resolution and does not show wallpapers too clearly. a nice feature is that you can change the size of the font from big, bigger and biggest (it's a lot bigger than the razor).
The numeric keypad cannot use by feel, you have to look at the phone to use it. the buttons on the top and bottom rows are a little tight to use.
voice quality is okay. the volume slowly increases when the phone rings and when you talk to someone, which can be a tad distracting.
It is easy to transfer files to and from the phone to an optional microSD card. cannot talk about the MP3 quality as the phone uses a proprietary plug for the charger/headphone connector (the headphones is optional). you are supposed to be able to use a stereo bluetooth headset but i did not test this feature.
Battery life is nothing to brag about. rated 10 days/3hrs s/b/talk which seems a bit low to me (the Sony 580i has 15 days/9hours).
i would have preferred getting the Sony W580i but I found the controls on that phone too difficult with large fingers. So i settled on the 737. do i have regrets, not really. my only concern is how long the batteries will last before replacing (the razor needed to replace every nine months) and also the durability of the sliding mechanism.
