"Nice compact phone, has issues" on by wild98

Pros: size, lots of great features like AIM/ICQ

Cons: cannot open one-handed, headset problems

Summary: I've had my x427m for about 6 months and just had my second replacement sent to me by Cingular. The 'universal' hands free headset jack is broken on all of them so far, and I've tried a headset from Plantronics and Motorola in all 3 phones... the one I got in today is having the same problem so it's going back too.

The design of the phone is slick, there are plenty of features to love, and I enjoy the color screen, but it's difficult to open with one hand when I'm driving, and my commute is unsafe without a hands free headset jack that works.

I also found with my first model that once I set up my phone to use ICQ that I no longer had the ability to go back and select AIM instead (I use both services).

Admittedly, I've dropped the phone a few times (who doesn't) and every single time, the battery falls off.

Now the good stuff: the screen is crisp and clear, and the animated wallpapers that ship with the firmware are pleasant enough for me. There's a decent assortment of ringtones that ship, and I've always been partial to the old analog telephone ring, or 'ring 2' as Cingular calls it. The vibra-melody setting is nice - since I can't always hear the phone ring in the car with the stereo on, I close the clamshell around my seatbelt on my chest so I can feel it vibrate - even on maximum volume it's difficult to hear in the car at 60+mph with either the windows down or the radio on.

I enjoy the T9 editing, even though many people don't. Having my phonebook on the SIM card is nice too for all of these replacements they're sending...

However, despite the good features of this phone, the bad headset port on 3 of the phones so far, the fact that the battery falls off far too easily, and the volume of the ringer, my next call to Cingular will be to ask for a credit to exchange the phone for a different model.

After 2 years with my x427m, I finally upgraded to a new phone. In the 2 years with my phone, I had very few problems. In fact, I had only one major problem with it that never got fixed. Another than the battery falling out everytime I dropped it, I had a much bigger issue with the caller id. It really depended on who was calling and what time of the day. Because, no matter who was calling, the caller id always flashed up, "Ashley's Cell". Ashley was my first contact in my address book. This occured while I was on the phone and when I wasn't. It did scare the crap out of me when I use to have the barber shop listed number 1 and I'd be receiving phone calls from them at 1 am. Once I figured out the problem, I soon felt better. But good phone, I dobut this review will help future owners, b/c while upgrading, I didn't even see it in the sales area.

The battery is SUPPOSED to fall out. The impact of the fall instinctively releases the battery. If it didn't, the battery would have gotten a shock from the drop. Don't blame the phone when the battery falls out. Blame yourself. Evidently you drop it alot.

I had the original x427 in 2004 and it had the headset jack problem as well. I tried like 3 brands of headset and the phone cannot maintain a good connection. I liked everything else about the phone but I figured I didn't need the hassle of the return and it was a free phone with contract. Shame on me for thinking the problem was a fluke. I lost the x427, bought the x427m and lo, it has the same exact problem. As soon as my contract is up, I have got to get something else. If you utilize the headset function on your cell, AVOID THIS PHONE.

I agree with wild98 that this phone has issues with the headset port. My wife and I purchased two of these phones from Cingular 9 months ago and the headsets never work. Interestingly enough, the gentleman who sold us the phones "didn't have headsets in stock" for several weeks (after the 30 day trial had passed). I tried several headsets at a nice store that let me try them all out - and all had the same problem - on both phones. I am exchanging the phone now, but assume that the replacement will have the same problem. I wish there was a way to get them to send me a different phone.
