"Does a lot, but nothing very well (especially conversations!)"

    by dudeman01 on April 9, 2005

    Pros: display, build quality

Cons: sound quality, annoying error tone, laborious menus

Summary: I got this phone to replace my trusty StarTac. Admittedly, I was looking for a phone that was a good at being a phone as the Motorola, and simplicity was also desired. The saleperson recommended the Sanyo 8200 (even though I mentioned no need for bells and whistles) because of good reviews. Given that and a good sale price, I decided to give it a try. It is well built and very sharp looking, and the display is incredible. Unfortunately, it has several shortcomings as well. The sound quality is quite poor. Receiver distorts at any volume over setting #1, and the speakerphone often resulted in the conversations running over each other. As mentioned in the Cnet review, the receiver has a very narrow "sweet spot". The reviewer says this is managable, but if you're actually going to use this as a phone, then it's a BIG deal. I found it almost impossible to find a good position to hear. H-E-L-L-O-!!! A phone should above all provide a decent conversation. Additionally, the phone has an incredibly annoying error tone that cannot be turned off, unless the entire phone is put into silent mode - ridiculous. I found this stupid error tone coming on constantly because it sounds anytime any of the exterior buttons are touched, regardless of whether the keyguard is on. Sanyo really overlooked some obvious things. If you're thinking about this phone, be sure to try it out before Sprint's 14-day trial period ends.

The phone is definately better than a 5 out of 10. The thing about the annoying error tone is false because you can turn off the beeps only of the phone without completely silencing it. It has some distortion but I had no trouble finding a sweet spot especially with the antenna extended. I am not degrading your review, I'm only saying that if more time or effort was taken to become familiar with the phone, then the review may have been slightly higher.
