"Slick, modern, and crafty little device." on by c.squared
Pros: colorful lightup interface, small and lightweight, clear 2.0MP pics, fm radio, step counter, easy-to-use navigation, fast processor
Cons: drains a lot of battery when using apps(mp3, video, games)
Summary: If you are thinking of getting a new phone or trying to update ur old bulky motorola, then this is the phone u should get!!!
Of course sony ericson's never come cheap, but they are high quality phones that will last and never get old-fashioned. So it is worth the price.
The editor's review is incorrect abt the fact that it has poor mp3 sound quality. I am assuming the editor used the earphones that came with the phone, which are crap. Instead, I used my own pair of high quality Bose earphones which produces incredible basses and high-def audio when used with this phone. Also, the editor said the phone's buttons were cramped. I meab what the hell right? Unless its a five year old nokia or motorola, every phone is getting smaller and companies are making smaller buttons these dayz.
Pros
-colorful lightup interface
-small and lightweight
-clear 2.0MP pic
-fm radio
-mp3,aac,mp4(divx videos)
-step counter
-easy-to-use navigation
-fast processor
-easy to transfer songs and files
Cons
-apps drain a lot of battery
-puny on/off button located on back of phone
-no earphone jack; must connect handsfree to phone in order to use earphones
-slow transfers if using phone to transfer music (use memory reader)
In my opinion, the pros overweigh the cons of this phone. So far I haven't gotten any problems with this phone and recommend this phone to anyone who wishes to modernize their way of communicating. -
"Funky phone with cool features!" on by lisasp1ce
Pros: features, ease of use, pretty
Cons: Battery, rejects calls when take out of pocket!
Summary: I have been using my grey W580i for just under a week now and I've really been enjoying the features. To date I only have two grumbles..
1. The battery on my phone is very poor and I have needed to charge my handset every 36 hours.. I haven't spent much time on the phone / texting etc. and ensured that it was fully charged before disconnecting etc. I am currently arranging with the network provider for a swap as this is not what was promised and they think I may have a fault handset.
2. The volume keys on the side of the handset act as a method of rejecting (sending the busy tone) to callers and quite a few of my calls have been lost this way. If anyone can suggest a way of setting the phone so that taking it out of your pocket doesn't result in this.. please let me know.
Apart from those 2 issues, I am loving this phone. There are some crazy little novely features such as the paedometer which make the phone great fun to use. I'm a big text message sender and have found no problem in sending messages with the smaller key pad. -
"Very good Walkman, yet no the greatest." on by tommyr07
Pros: Great headphones, lots of fitures, nice looking pictures.
Cons: No flash, texting can be ennoying, little bit slugish the interface.
Summary: For the last 3 weeks I've been using the Sony Ericsson W580i and its my second Ericsson phone but my first walkman phone. I've been around walkman phones before so I know that there strength is on the music and this models stays with that.
The phone has a nice slider design that totally changed my perspective on sliders (was not much of fan before) and you can find other sliders that a similar stile like the Motorola Rokr or the new LG Shine.
I strongly compare this to my last 2 phones the Samsung Sync and the Razr V3XX. With the samsung I had great pictures and decent music but call quality was not that "wow". With the Razr v3 XX I had good call quality, good music but the picture quality was not like the Samsungs even though the Razr v3XX is a big difference from the original Razr's. With the W580i I had great pictures, great music and good call quality.
Camera: Great quality but lacks a flash and even the little mirror to see your self unlike other walkman models that at least have flash.
Menu/interface: Easy to understand, easy to use. My only problem at first was that I could find the menu for yahoo, windows, im messenger and it was because it was already pre-seted on one of the speaker buttons. I tend to change around menu's fast so sometimes the phone takes a little to catch up with me and this is other is annoying but got used to it. When the phone losses signal completely and finds it again it kind of freezes until it read it again. Like I said can be annoying.
Keypad: I can text with no problem, it is small but you can work with it. The only real problem for me is when I'm on a messenger and want to write a lot but thats about it.
External memory: The last couple of phones I used in the past months (Samsung Sync and Motorola Razr V3XX) both used micro sd and when I ever I felt like changing phones all I had to do was to change the micro sd from one phone to the other. When I get the W580i I notice that it does not use micro because slot was bigger then a micro but smaller than a mini. When I read carefully its a new type of memory that Sony is using called M2. Was able to get the 1GB on ebay with the UM adapter for a rough $40 dollars (including shipping). Found it a little expensive since the 2GB micro go for less $25 on ebay.
Internet: The basic media.net features are available (if you have the media package of course) but was sad to notice that I could not see the Celular Videos since they require 3G.
To sum up. It draws from others attention because it has kind of a different style as well as look (for now), its light, its not bulky, I consider the music sounds pretty good (above good but under great) and you don't need a cd to transfer music or pictures. All you need is the cable that is included and the software is already integrated in the phone.
I have the black version but plan to buy the gray housing and change it completely. If you have to choose from the 3 colors available my suggestion (depending on likes) go for the gray simply because the Walkman series is identified by the white/orange and black/orange colors but the gray/blue look hot plus is cheaper for now then LG shine.
Hope this was helpful and if I left something out let me know and I will gladly fill in the blanks or make the necessary corrections. -
"great...at first" on by patj400
Pros: styling, good music player, intuitive design and functions
Cons: horrible keypad, speakers blown
Summary: This was a great phone at first. When i first bought it, everything worked fine and I was happy. Now, 2 months in it is a complete dissapointment. FIVE of the 12 keys on the number pad have cracked, and both the select and back button on the right of the phone have simply stopped working, along with the "up" direction on the D-Pad. The speaker that you would normally use to hear people's voices while on the phone is blown out as well. I have babied this phone (I still have the screen protector on) and to have these kinds of malfunctions this early in is terrible.

"Better than expected" on by sedengmania
Pros: Walkman 2.0,Shake control, good battery life, crystal clear high resolution screen, easy to use,the D-pad itself is a speaker!
Cons: Almost impossible to remove battery cover, chrome paint on D-pad can be faded, more apps takes more battery
Summary: Well its my first SE phones, but it have tons of features and its a WALKMAN! i'm very impressed with this phone, coz' the music quality is excellent(for the best quality, use the handsfree and turn on megabass).
more, it has shake control. with this features, you can switch the song by holding the walkman button and shake it whereever you like.and the speaker is under Dpad, so you don' hafta turn the phone upside down so the speaker is on the top-side for best music quality(with speaker, not handsfree) The screen is crystal clear, but you have to adjust the screen brightness to minimum for longer battery life.its easy to use and user-friendly, and have the Walkman 2.0(its the same though, just differ display)Thats the pros. now the cons.
The battery life is good, though running many feature/apps can drains battery a lot. The chrome paint on Dpad is faded unfortunately.Like other said, the battery cover is hard to remove, so you hafta' use a knife or something.and the last one is camera. The camera's quality is very good, however the zoom mode can't be done in 2mp & 1mp mode, so if you want to zoom you hafta' change the image quality to VGA.
Many people complaining about battery, but the battery is good, they just dont know how to cut the costs on battery life, so i'm giving you the tip :
-adjust the screen brightness to minimum
-turn off the pedometer -that's a useless features if you're not an athlete
-dont open the phone if you're not typing-it will cut off the batt costs for turning on keypad light
