    "Great Features, cumbersome design"

    by cidhighwind55 on January 6, 2006

Pros: screen is beautiful, the mobile web is really quick, lots of great features to play with

Cons: A bit pricey; it's such a hassle to get to any of the great features the phone has to offer

Summary: So, my boss recommended the w600i, Sony's competitor to the ROKR, and despite the $300 price tag (with a $100 rebate, reducing the final price to $200, but I had to front 300 instore), i went ahead and picked it up. I took it home and was playing with all the neat features that it has. To start, the screen is simply amazing -- everything is crisp and clean ans such a pleasure to look at. The 1.3 megapixel camera takes some really high-quality pictures for a camera phone and the Walkman functionality works just as well as any mp3 player (though only 256 mb is available, and there is no expansion slots for sd cards or what have you).

It also seems that it was supposed to be a super-wireless-videogame-system, though the games that were packaged with the phone (some racing game and a few throw-away puzzle games) were absolutely abysmal. the racing game was choppy, slow and unresponsive and it takes a good amount of time to load up and cancel out of the phone. If you're looking to play games on the go, get a game boy advance; what's available as 'hardcore' games are truly horrible.

Now as far as the clunky system design goes, it's really a tarnish on what could have been an amazing phone. The key pad is on a swivel base, so to open it up, you have to twist the two parts of the phone and it's a real hassle when it seems that the phone is made to be closed for the most part. If it was a phone where the top slid up to reveal the keypad on the surface underneath, like on the Samsung SCH-i730, that would work rather well as it's a simple and pleasing design. If you want to dial up a number, you have to open the phone; if you want to find a name in your phone book, you have to open the phone. It sounds like a lame complaint, but when you play with the phone and all of the hot-buttons are on the face, you want to keep it closed as much as possible.

Dont misunderstand and think that i'm saying that this is an out and out poorly made phone -- it's not. It does what it's intended to do and it does it well. If it was a phone that slid up to reveal a keypad rather than twisting around, i would probably give it an 8 or so. The fact that you are put through such a hassle really takes away from it. Sure, i could have some great functionality, but if it's so bad to get to them where I dont want to deal with getting to the fun things this phone has to offer, it's really not worth it.

First of all, you DO NOT have to open the phone to search for a contact in your phonebook. Second, I don't like how you based your entire review on the swivel design of the phone.
