    "Nice, but needs some work"

    by brantner04 on October 21, 2007

Pros: Works well in suburban areas; nice feature to have on a phone; pedestrian mode; easily portable

Cons: Outdated maps; freezes phone at times; program likes to crash; not good in big cities

Summary: I decided to get the PRO PACK on my sprint phone so it includes unlimited everything basically. The main reason I did this was for the Navigation feature. So basically i'm paying 30 bucks a month for navigation. I wanted it because I have one car with built in NAV and one without, so my thought was that I would use my cell phone for a NAV tool in the car without.

The system works great when I'm in the suburbs, I've never really had a problem in the burbs, the real issue is the fact that I live in downtown Chicago, and when I try to use it there that is when the fun begins. The system is way too slow to react to changes. If I miss a turn, it takes forever to recalculate, and by the time it does, i've missed several more turns. Another BIG issue is the fact that a lot of times it has no idea where I am. It thinks i'm on a totally different street than I'm really on. I understand it might be a little slow to react sometimes because of the tall buildings and the fact there might not be as good of a signal, although I never have a problem with the system that's built into the other car. I realize you can't really compare the two... but when it has signal it should at least know the general area i'm in, and at times it's had me pinned 2 or more miles from where I really was. I actually ended up running out of gas because it kept recalculating my route and was leading me in the wrong direction when I was looking for the nearest gas station. Thankfully road-side assistance came to my rescue.

The one MAJOR plus of using the phone instead of getting a portable GPS unit to put in the car is that the phone is always with me. I can't forget it in the car and have the car broke into the next day when I come out. That is my main fear of getting one to put on the dash is that i'll forget it and it'll be gone, or worse my car will be damaged. So the phone gps system wins there.

But all in all, i think i'm just going to take my chances and get a windshield mount system and hopefully my scatter brained self won't leave it in the car!
