"Better to get a GPS unit without the monthly fee"

    by coolhand37us on January 13, 2009

Pros: good voice clarity, though quite
3-d map is easy to follow, if you stay directly on target, no stopping at a drivethrough.

Cons: Takes forever to load a route
    does not say N, S, E, W
    no adjustments to the route
    Voice is very quite

Summary: I have the LG Rumor, wich is only compatible with the regular Sprint Vision not the Power Vision (I think that is what it is called) You may have better service with a more compatible phone.

First off, you must be stationary to get your route (so that the navigation can even find your location) and then the navigation does not know which direction you are facing, yet it tells you to go straight. If you go straight in the wrong direction the navigator has to come up with a new route instead of giving you any room to turn around. This wouldn't be a problem except that it takes so long for the new route to come up that the navigator can't keep up with you. By the time your new route has come up you have likely passed a turn and need another new route. Half the time the navigator can't even find you if you are moving too fast (30 mph).

Also when it tells you to turn "Left" I would like a direction such as "West" or even "South West" would do. When you are looking at the 3-d map it turns with you so you can't tell which direction is North on the map. Maybe you can with other views, though I didn't care for the other views much.

So as long as you get started in the right direction and you don't need to detour for any reason at all (e.g. gass, coffee, food, construction) then you will get to your destination pretty easily. Though you may have to hold your phone up to your ear every time it speaks to you.

I upgraded my plan mainly for the Sprint TV and the Navigation, I'm not happy with the navigation and my phone isn't compatible with the TV (like Sprint couldn't tell me that before). I have downgraded to my previous plan and I will be buying a GPS unit that stays in my car, knows which direction is North and doesn't charge me a monthly fee.
