    "Needs Work"

    by Chris B2 on December 22, 2006

    Pros: Styling, durability, large screen

    Cons: Functionality

Summary: I really wanted to like this phone but I have had it 2 days and it is getting harder and harder to like. No one seems to have any accessories to fit it, no car charger, no headsets, no belt pouches. The bumper on the phone is a waste it serves no purpose and makes it IMPOSSIBLE for the phone to fit in ANY belt pouch. This phone is marketed to men, and all the men I know wear their phones on their belt. Fourtunately the bumper comes off by removing the 2 allen head screws that hold it to the phone, but there are still 2 small bumper mounting blocks at the corners. The phone does not have the STANDARD 2.5mm headset jack so you always have to have the headset adapter wire with you if you want to use a headset. So far I can't find anyone selling extra headset adapter wires for this phone. The sound quality of both the ear speaker and the external speaker is poor when the volume is turned up higher than LOW. Unless you keep the speaker volume on the lowest setting the speakers start to break up and the sound is garbled. The #1 speed dial is preset at the factory for voice mail and can not be re-assigned to speed dial a contact in your phone book. When using one touch speed dial the phone number appears MUCH larger on the screen than the persons name. When I use speed dial I want to see the NAME of the person the phone is dialing not the number, that's why I took the time to program it into my contacts in the first place so I wouldn't have to worry about the number!!! If you have your cell carrier blocking caller ID so you are not letting others see your cell # when you call them you naturally need to program in *82 at the beginning of your contacts #'s so they can see it's you calling. But this phone does not recognize your contact's # with *82 in front of it when they call you and the phone does not display their name. So you need to turn off caller ID block with your carrier and delete *82 from in front of your contacts to get a contacts name to show when they call you. This is a problem I have run into on other phones, but they were older, like the Motorola V60. I was hopeing a new phone would have solved this dialing issue, WRONG. I read somewhere this phone is sold in Japan and is now being imported to the US. If this is the quality of phones in Japan I feel sorry for them. I tried to register the phone for warranty purposes on the UT web site but it says my ESN # is invalid. I tried it 3 times and it's the same # on the box and the phone. Be careful with the pre-loaded wall paper photos the phone comes with, they can be deleted, my other phones will not let you delete the pre-loaded wall paper options the phone comes with. Also this phone only comes with about 6 ring tone options all of my other phones have come with like 20. I will probably go back to my Motorola V710 or look at a RAZR. This phone I guess is good for a person who does not use it much and needs a phone that sacrafices performance for durability and will only use it in a quiet area. CASIO if you want to stay in the US cell phone market you need to do better than this.

One question, did you not look at the phone before you bought it??? I have one and knew the features beforehand. It works for what it is meant for, a basic rugged phone. I find that if the speaker is up, it not only works, but is WAY too loud allowing people in the next room to hear my conversation.
Perhaps a chocolate would be better.

thanks for mentioning that this phone does not prefix *82 automatically in front of callers names whom you have designated in your address book to be able to see your caller ID. this is a big deficiency, and I cannot believe phone makers are overlooking this -- and creating a big hassle for those of us who use call restrict. my new samsung schu740 has the same deficiency and I'm sending it back.

To temporarily resolve the *82 problems, I save the default # WITH *82. Then, I save the # as mobile2 WITHOUT *82 (yes, the number is saved twice.) This technique allows the caller ID to work for those with private numbers. The only problem is I can't redial the missed call because it will not reveal my number to the person I'm calling. I simply go to the phone book and dial the number from the phone book. Temporary solution for the caller ID issue, but it works.

The bumper serves a purpose. The engineers would not have added it otherwise. It protects the phone from certain especially vulnerable falls like being dropped on the tip of the flip screen when open. A hard drop might damage the hinge or screen without the bumper. Also the bumper serves as a place to attach various clips and lanyards to the phone, like small carabiners for example. The bumper is very useful in this way.

As the article states, this phone is designed for outdoor sports and it's shortcomings are more than compensated for by it's survivability under harsh conditions. Having a rugged phone like this might be a life saver for someone in an emergency situation who might otherwise be left with a wet, broken, inoperable phone of another design.

Well Chris I bought this phone at a verizon store and als got a car charger, holster and a belt pouch. If you need additional parts just call utstarcom ( number is in your mannual) and order them. Now as for the number 1 it is always dedicated to voice mail by verizon so dont blame the phone. If you put a number in speed dial why do you need to see it each time you dial?

The quality and versatility of the phones on the market in Japan is lightyears ahead of what is on the market in the US. There's really no comparison. If anything, they feel sorry for us.

I have this phone, and I have a car charger, belt clip, and all the accessories I have had with other phones (aside from Bluetooth).

I got all the accessories from Verizon.
