    "Software update improves call quality"

by LewBob on August 22, 2008

Pros: Solid feel, don't have to worry about getting it wet, flashlight function,

Cons: Battery life, have to go to Verizon store for update

Summary: I am on my second Boulder and was going to give up on them because of lousy call quality. I got a tip on a software update, and after doing the update yesterday the call quality is much improved.

Many have complained about the battery life and I agree that it is way too short. However, it could be that the update will help with the battery also.

Bottom line, get the update done as soon as you get the phone and you will probably be happy with this phone if you are looking for a rugged phone with basic features.
    Updated
I am on my second Boulder and was going to send it back when I heard about a software update that helped with the voice quality. It took the friendly tech at my Verizon store about 15 minutes to update it and now it sounds pretty good. The ring is also much louder and I am hopeful that the battery life may be a little longer.

Don't give up on this phone until you have tried the update! Lew

Still happy with the phone a year later and just ordered one for my wife, whose phones keep breaking. I did buy a long life battery, which makes it a bit bulkier. Still it fits in my case and looks like new.

My software version is v9230M09. PRL 51345

The version number would be helpful... In the tools menu, mine has an option to check for updates, but it fails with a server unavailale error right now - I'll try again another day. FWIW, there's a wiki page that tracks these things here: http://www.phonenews.com/phones/index.php/Verizon_Firmware_Tracker and my firmware on a device purchased last week is V9230M15 according to the "Phone Info" dialog (also accessed via the tools & settings menu). Call quality sounds pretty good to my tin ears

Yes. The software version number after update would be nice. My town has a bunch of idiots working at the Verizon Wireless store as well.

Is there any more information you could give on the software update? The Software Version number after update would be nice. I talked to tech people at Verizon today and they had no knowledge of a software update and just tried to sell me a bluetooth headset instead.
