"Excellent phone, lacking only a few desireable features"
Pros: Range, battery life, voice quality
Cons: No base headset jack; base screen limited, no battery backup
Summary: Because my 2-line 2.4 Ghz VTech phone was interfering with my home office wireless network, I replaced it with this Panasonic. I was a little wary, as I hadn't planned on spending a couple of hundred on a new phone system, but so far, this phone has performed very well. It performs better in most areas than the VTech, and except for the lack of a few features, is an excellent choice.
Pros:
- Voice quality, problematic in the VTech, is significantly better on this unit. Even the outgoing voicemail message is more lifelike than digital, a major plus driven by Panasonic's "clarity plus" feature, which only marginally impacts battery life.
- As mentioned, the problems I had with wireless connectivity in my home network disappeared when I installed this phone, a characteristic I understand is applicable to all 5.8 ghz phones.
- Battery life is very good. I can go a full day or two of conference calls without recharging the handset.
- Can activate voice mail, ringing for line 1, line 2, both or neither, as desired - very flexible.
- Small footprint - takes up very little desktop space.
- Baby monitor feature: you can use the handsets like baby monitors, an innovative feature.
Cons:
I would give this phone a 10 if it had just a few features that, for example, the VTech had and I appreciated.
- No battery backup. If power fails ( a regular occurence where I live), the phone dies.
- Limited screen detail on base unit: the screen on the base is a tiny window that only shows messages in the answering machine, activated ringers and activated answering machine lines. I'd prefer a larger window with Caller ID, settings, etc.
- No handset naming: this feature would be handy in informing the user which handset I want to page via intercom, for example.
- No base unit headset jack. Can't, for example, charge a handset AND use the headset on the base unit because there is no base unit jack, an inconvenience.
- No Line 2 data port: useful for fax connectivity, this is easily corrected with a $2 connector, but still, an inconvenience.
Overall, this is an excellent phone with great performance, made less than perfect because of a lack of a few convenient features. I recommend it for home/office systems.
