"Phone Answering Machine - Poseur" on by vic2665
Pros: Excellent voice quality, ergonomics and range
Cons: Not nearly a phone answering system
Summary: Uniden markets the TRU8885 as digital answering phone. However, anyone who buys it with the serious intent of using it as a home answering system will be disappointed.
To begin with, nowhere on the box does Uniden specify recording capacity. Only after opening the package and reading half way through the manual do you discover you're limited to a TOTAL of 12 minutes recording time. In a day when 16 megabytes of memory can be bought for pennies, this lapse is inexplicable. Forget that Uniden would like you to pay upwards of $150 for the phone.
The unit is not strong on answering features either. Start with a 3-digit pin (not very secure). Don't look for Remote Call Notification here (where the machine calls forward to alert you of a priority message). Similarly, don't expect to find an option for an alternate greeting, there's only one - unless you count the mechnical vioce. Also missing from the list is a Telemarketer Rejection tone that causes telemarketer calls to fall off before the phone rings. Most answering phones today support multiple voice mailboxes - not the Uniden. This is only the short list, as well. In fact, it seems Uniden tacked-on the "aswering system" nomenclature as an afterthought.
In summary: The Uniden TRU8885 is an excellent expansion phone for basic home use. However, if your looking for a "TRU" answering phone - you won't find it here.
Uniden would do themselves credit to let the "Digital Answering System" claim accompany the missing "Recording Capacity" specification off this package. -
"This Phone Has Problems" on
Pros: Great Features and nice sound when it works
Cons: I've had this phone for two weeks. At first I was very impressed. However, after the first day I picked the ringing handset up and heard nothing. I thought my phone line had gone dead. I had no dail tone. My husband came home and removed the power fr

"Hey... this is really nice!" on by bodieman
Pros: It does what Uniden says it does.
Cons: I agree with other reviewers that the Caller ID notice on each handset is a little much. It will probably drive the anal retentive up a tree.
Summary: My old cordless phones stopped working right- maybe due to wireless internet- I don't really know- but I do know that I needed another phone. I got this one.
Everything seems to work very well. The features are really very thoughtfully designed- it allows me to do everything that I want a phone for. Telephone/Answering machine/Intercom/Phonebook. It has pretty cool stuff like lots of different ringtones and the ability to associate them with particular phonebook entries- so you can know who's calling by the ring. Ya gotta love that. Of course you can get your messages from a remote location.
The range is enough for me in my home environment. That was the thing I had the most trepidation about when deciding what phone to buy. I live in a 3.5 storey townhouse with wood floors and plasterboard and lath walls. Not a wide floorplan, more vertical. With the base located somewhat centrally on the ground floor, I get great reception throughout the house. Very clear, no breaking up. When I first connected the base to the telephone line, I had it on the floor near one end of the house- with the base in this less favorable position I got some static at extreme distances within the house. Placement seems to have been key- but there's plenty of power for clean reception in this particular context.
I read one review complaining that the speakerphone in the handsets were basically nonfunctional because they are very quiet. I guess if you are in a busy office environment, or if your home is very loud and chaotic this could be a problem- I don't know. My house is relatively quiet most of the time, though, and the speakerphone on the handset is plenty loud enough for me to have a comfortable conversation on it. I don't know how that affects the battery life, though. I don't really need to use a speakerphone most of the time.
Anyway, I really like the phone. -
"No caller ID" on
Pros: good sound quality
Cons: Caller ID goes out constantly with a message of "incomplete data." There is an elaborate , 10-step reset feature that lasts for one phone call, and it goes otu again. Product support recommends disconnecting all over phones in the house.

"What are you people talking about?!" on
Pros: I don't know what all these people are complaining about. This is the best cordless I've ever owned. I replaced the Panasonic KX-TG2730S with this phone. The Panasonic was awfull!!! Just read the reviews on that phone! The sound quality both volume a
Cons: I can't say that I've found a single negative issue with this phone. Of course, I'me comparing it to the crap Panasonic so everything about it seems better!
