"Not more powerful than the PS3 (a lot less in fact)"

    by pb8185 on May 20, 2005

Pros: Looks awesome, good marketing campaign, xbox live

Cons: poor performance compared to PS3, you have to pay to play xbox live

Summary: lets lay down some REAL facts:
    XBOX360: 1 teraflops
    PS3: 2 teraflops

    XBOX360: 50 shader ops/sec
    PS3: 100 shader ops/sec

    XBOX 360: 9 billion dot product ops/sec
    PS3 51 billion dot product ops/sec

see a pattern? don't know what this means for gfx performance? look it up on google.

XBOX360 is to PS3 what PS2 was to XBOX, except the PS3 will not come out a year after XBOX360. Lets see the xbox fanatics find a comeback to REAL facts.

Seriously, at this point the PS3 is nothing more than high profile vaporware. The specs on the Blue-Ray drive are not finalized, Sony is still accepting contract bids for parts, and all of the game demos so far have been CGI generated movies and not actual playable game demos. Sony is often much more bark than bite (can you say "emotion engine"?).

That said, I am a huge PS2 fan and didn't even own an original Xbox. I had a PS2 the day they came out and picked up a GameCube about a year and a half ago. I have a 360 and am pretty impressed thus far. I will have a PS3 at some point. That's when accurate comparisons can be done, when both systems actually exist.

For now, their architectures are waaaaay different. Both have apparant spec advantages, it will be the application of these advantages through game devlopment that will make one more powerful than the other. One thing I can say is that, as a programmer, the 360 is far easier to develop on than Sony's cell. I question the usefulness of the Cell in gaming applications, but with new techniques to harness it's power...who knows...

first off, xbox live is free idiot.
secondly technically at the moment it is more powerful than the ps3 because the ps3 isnt even out yet. for all we know, they could make the ps3 crap by the time it comes out

    Xbox 360: 1 pound of B.S.
    PS3: 10 pounds of B.S.

Honestly, who cares about graphics THAT MUCH? If you're basing your opinion of a console on graphics, then you need to go back to the good days and play some games with crappy graphics that were the best ever (Sonic, for example.)

Don't be so judgemental. For all you know, Revolution could triumph over both of them, and then where would you be, standing by some stats?

(By the way, I've been converted to a PS3 / Revo fan, I just don't care to base decisions off of graphics.)

Would you rather have an absolutely AMAZING graphics-based console with one HORRIBLE game or a not-so-good-graphics-based console that had some of the best games (SNES, anyone?)

Im afraid your stats are wrong very wrong infact the ps3 is inferrer compared with the xbox360.
-9.6ghrz processing power compared with 3.2 from the ps3
-9.6 billion dot product operations per second
-48 billion shader operations per second
-22.4 GB/s memory interface bus bandwidth
256 GB/s memory bandwidth to EDRAM
    21.6 GB/s front-side bus
    -unified shader architecture

    ps3 has
-1.8terraflops but xbox360 3 cores more than make up for this
    - Main RAM: 25.6GB/s(measly compared to the 360)
    - VRAM: 22.4GB/s(measly compared to the 360)
    -nonunified shader architecture

with a harddrive your load times will be less and with tons of action on the screen less slowdown.

Not only did you place 360's TFLOPS too low,you did the same for PS3.360 actually clocks in at 1.9.PS3 is hittin 2.18.A .28 difference--whopdy doo!If you wanna round,BOTH are at 2.

I dunno how accurate you are with the second comparison, but PGR3 is photorealistic. It will never look BETTER than photorealistic.Don't listen to SOny.Ken probably said,"Will PS3's graphics b better? The graphics will look more realistic than the real world!".

I don't see how this is important,Cell will not reach 100%-EVER!It has little power compared to 360 for games. It would do good otherwise.No...wait...Apple rejected it for poor performance.Guess not.

Microsoft has already said that there will be a free level of Live right out of the box so I'm not seeing where you "have to" pay.

The numbers do, in fact, suggest that the PS3 will be more powerful than the Xbox 360. However, only time will determine the real winner. Each side needs to utilize their hardware to its fullest and deliver quality games. The new Xbox has a huge advantage with its early release date, but the same advantage nearly killed Sega. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

I have done some programming on both platforms, and the PS2 is a pain in the @$$ to program. Xbox and hopefully 360 is better IMHO. This will only assist in making better games.

But come on, be realistic, you gave it a 5. Please. I would give the sony and 360 a 9 or 10. The real winners are gamers!
