You don't need an HDTV to enjoy the XBox Elite however you won't get the full benifits from it. The only benefit of having the Elite is if you have LIVE and are constantly downloading demos, trailer, music, etc... then you will benefit with the larger hard drive. You could buy the hard drive seperate but it's the better deal for the Elite if your a first time buyer. Obviously the HDMI is useless till you upgrade your TV but once you do then you will be able to finally embrace the full visual experience. You can also get the most out of the external HD DVD player if you go that route as well. If you don't download stuff then you won't need the bigger hard drive. So look at how you will set up your system and what you want it to do for you. If you want the best out of it then Elite, if your not worried about the top graphics and storage space then Premium.
