Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP (Cobalt) (discontinued)

Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP (Cobalt)

Entered CNET Catalog: 05/06/2003

SKU: 0045496713843

Manufacturer: Nintendo of America

Manufacturer description

The Game Boy Advance SP is a redesigned version of the wildly popular Game Boy Advance. The system has a new illumination feature and sleek flip-screen design making it the most distinctively stylish, compact and portable Game Boy system ever. Building on the significant improvements and refinements already introduced in the current Game Boy Advance, the Game Boy Advance SP features a revolutionary Front Light Screen making game play easy in any lighting condition. The system is powered by a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery good for about 10 hours of game play and takes only three hours to recharge. Amazingly, the battery life increases to approximately 18 hours of continuous play when the Front Light Screen is turned off. All current and future Game Boy Advance games are compatible with the new system. And, similarly, Game Boy Advance SP is backward compatible, allowing use with virtually all games and accessories previously released in the Game Boy line.

Product summary

The goodThe good: Stylish, compact design; front-lit screen; removable lithium-ion battery; compatible with all current GBA games and most accessories.

The badThe bad: Can't swap in standard batteries in a pinch; no included headphone jack.

The bottom lineThe bottom line: By including an illuminated screen, Nintendo has finally fixed the original Game Boy Advance's biggest flaw.

At this time... Probably not.

Pros: Plays Original GB games, Lighted Screens

Cons: There's DS and PSP now, Lack of Headphone jack

Review: It's been exactly 3 years since its release, but I'll review this anyway.
The graphics back in its hayday were terrific, 32-bit and the large amount of colors were great. The upgrade to SP was definately a smart move on Nintendo's part as the screen was a flaw in the original. However, the one downside was the lack of a headphone jack and to some people this may have been important.
Now though, with the release of DS(Lite), PSP, and the Micro, the SP shouldn't really be bought unless you're saving your budget or thinking about Micro. Since Micro's screen size is too small for the intended 2.9" screen of SP, go with SP.
In closing, SP doesn't compare with the new portable systems, but makes up for being more portable than DS(Lite) or PSP, as well as more affordable.

Why does this have an 8.3?

Pros: Durable, cute.

Cons: Nothing special anymore.

Review: Back in its day, the SP was an excellent portable device, but since the launch of the PSP, its nothing but a supernintendo compaired to an xbox. The DS (in my opinion) was a horrible next device for nintendo to release. The PSP is truly superior to it in every way possible. Web browsing, video playback, MP3/ATTRAC3 playback, picture slideshows and excellent games just blows the DS out of the water. The SP was a good platform, but you would think after it they would come up with something to compete with current technology. I think nintendo should get their a**es in gear and make something that kids don't laugh at you for having.

This system is almost perfect

Pros: flip-top,backlit,very small,no batteries required

Cons: CANT put batteries in, GBA & GBA SP dont have a good selection of games

Review: The GBA SP has the best design of any portable gaming system yet, with the backlit screen and the flip-top to make it half as long. The DS has these features but is too bulky even with the flip-top and its touch screen is a waist of space. It is a nice idea but makes the DS too large. If its a "touch" screen it will get scratched and broken anyway eventually.

The PSP is just about the best system now, but with a lack of good games {GBA doesnt have good many games either wich is its only real downside) and Sony trying to gouge people for money I sure wont get 1 for a while.

The game boy andvance sp rocks!!

Pros: Its good and fun.

Cons: It should have longer hours for playing.

Review: It should be different colours and games

One of the best 2D systems of all time

Pros: Lightweight, but big on 2D power

Cons: Not good for the large handed

Review: Where the original was an 8 this is a 9 and as near perfect a 2D system as was ever released in portables. Fact is that hype or no, compeititors or no, this is, was, and will always be remembered as a great system.

Very good for the price.

Pros: A good handheld for the money, can be made a video player.

Cons: The DS is better. Out of date.

Review: This was the best at its time. It wasn't put to its full potential as the 3D graphics engine in games wasn't used that often. Very small and lightwieght, very well built, backwards compatibility, frontlight screen and long battery life. A great buget upgrade from Gameboy/ colour or gameboy advanced. But if you have the money go for the DS or PSP

Good, but go for DS or PSP

Pros: Nice backlit color screen, solid & good feeling buttons, rechargeable, loud sound, long battery life.

Cons: Not really any.

fun comes in small packages

Pros: Fun game selection, easy to use, and all for a good price. A multitude of accessories are made for the sp from cameras to controller grips to extra speakers, making it highly upgradeable. The folding design protects screen, backlight is neat.

Cons: The graphics are mediocre, I'd rather spend a little more for the Nintendo DS, but if you are a non-frequent player like me, then you don't need all of the high-end gadgets.

One step backward, two steps foward

Pros: Great little system (Read the review which says one step foward, two steps backward, who is that idiot?)

Cons: None

I love the product!

Cons: There is no place for headphones. Takes a while to charge.

Best Gameboy yet!

Pros: I bought my SP yesterday and I must say I am surprised. The fact that it has a backlight should be the buying factor, since the gameboy was lacking that one feature. The SP's sleek look and feel will appeal to everyone and make gaming more easier, since

Great little system

Pros: It's pretty obvious the negative reviewers don't even own one of these. I've hade mine for a week now and it's been great. The picture is crisp, even in brightly light rooms and outside. The battery charge lasts at least 10 hours, and you can play it wh

Finnaly!! backlit and rechargable

Pros:

Cons:

Review: All I have wanted for years is a screen that doesn't strain my eyes and a device that I can simply recharge without buying some funky solution. Finnaly It is here!

A good attempt, but still lacking

Pros:

Cons:

Review: They finally got it together and added a front light for the reflective LCD screen. Unfortunately the image is still washed out compared to other backlit TFT LCD screens. The 10-year-old NEC Turbo Express had a crystal clear, super sharp, bright and colorful LCD screen that I have yet to see duplicated in the new portable games.

One step forward, two steps backward

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The new backlit feature definitely helps see the screen a LOT better(why they always produced this dark screen in the first place is beyond me). I also like its fliptop design (I wonder how this will hold up in the long run). There is also a plus in having the included rechargeable lithium battery because you no longer have to continuously buy AA batteries (except those of us that bought the rechargeable ones). The drawback here is the battery power on SP doesn't last as long as the GBA version (even without having the backlight on). So once the battery is drained, you're outta luck until it is recharged (takes about 3 hours). You could buy another lithium battery ($20 - $30) and have it charged but then you'd need to have a screw driver available to swap the batteries (and since airlines no longer allow people to carry screwdrivers, this may be a problem on long plane trips). My other issue is the lack of a headphone plug. If you are in a noisy area or need to play without disturbing others, you'd have to now buy a headphone adaptor. So, it seems Nintendo is trying to make things easier for us but they still have a ways to go.
