1, do we really need an ilink? 2, I dare you to give me the name of a good game that can use the HDD. (and FFXI does NOT count) 3, with top loading disk drives dust is easier to remove if it gets in there, plus you don't have to turn on the PS2 for a short bit just to get the disc out. Finally, the infered receiver is on the slim PS2, unlike what you said about it being removed.
