"You've All Fallen Into Sony's Hype... Read the facts here..."
Pros: Raw Power...
Cons: Cell processor and blu-ray dont exist yet, very expensive console
Summary: All of you PS3 need to get your facts straight before bashing consoles. First of all, the cell processor doesn't even exist yet and all of the PS3 trailers (excluding a few) were all COMPUTER GENERATED. Yes, even the Killzone 2 vid was CGI. Don't believe me, here's what a developer from Epic said:
"Well, Epic Games's Mark Rein has gone on record to say that "in addition to the Sony demos being shown by Phil Harrison, the Epic and EA presentations were the only third party portions actually running on the PS3 in real-time."
Full article here: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/615/615531p1.html
Maybe you can relate back to 1999 when Sony hyped the "emotion engine" in the PS2, and claimed they would be rendering movies on it... what ever happened to that?
Plus, the console is rumored to be starting at around $450-500. Then add games, controllers and accessories to that total.
Finally, it was confirmed that all in-game footage displayed by Microsoft at e3 was running on alpha developers kits, which are only 20-40% of the power of the final hardware, plus graphical effects were turned off to keep frame rates smooth enough.

So before you go bashing consoles, get your facts straight.Updated
Xbox360 games at E3 on Powermac G5s
A pair of Apple Powermac G5 systems were actually running the Xbox 360 demos, not the 360 console. The consoles in the kiosks weren't actually running, they were just for show - now you know why all the controllers were wired.
Because the G5 systems can only use a GeForce 6800 Ultra or an ATI Radeon X800 XT, developers had to significantly reduce the image quality of their demos - which explains their lack luster appearance. Anti-aliasing wasn't enabled on any of the demos, while the final Xbox 360 console will have 4X AA enabled on all titles.
Xbox 360 vs. PS3
There are three critical performance aspects of a console:
* Central Processing Unit (CPU) performance:
The Xbox 360 CPU architecture has three times the general purpose processing power of the Cell. Cell's claimed advantage is on streaming floating point work which is done on its seven DSP processors.
* Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) performance:
The Xbox 360 GPU design is more flexible and it has more processing power than the PS3 GPU. In addition, its innovated features contribute to overall rendering performance.
* Memory System Bandwidth:
Xbox 360 has 278.4 GB/s of memory system bandwidth. The PS3 has less than one-fifth of Xbox 360's (48 GB/s) of total memory system bandwidth.
When you break down the numbers, Xbox 360 has provably more performance than PS3. Keep in mind that Sony has a track record of over promising and under delivering on technical performance. The truth is that both systems pack a lot of power for high definition games and entertainment.
However, hardware performance, while important, is only a third of the puzzle. Xbox 360 is a fusion of hardware, software and services. Without the software and services to power it, even the most powerful hardware becomes inconsequential. Xbox 360 games?by leveraging cutting-edge hardware, software, and services?will outperform the PlayStation 3.

Dude you have no idea what ur talking about, you'v probably never played a PS3 in your life.Besides the only god game for the 360 is HALO 3
-
You might want to give credit where it's due. You didn't write this because I've read it before, so you should consider posting stuff that's actually your own opinion, not that of someone else (at least not without citing).
-
So so sad, ever heard of the trade descriptions act? Obviously not. I reiterate; sad!
-
thats all i have to say...... people are pissed and close there eyes to the truth!
-
Why comment on something you don't own?

Theoretically, you just can?t go wrong buying a PS3, unless Blu-ray looses the format war (which I don?t believe they will). Please remember, the PS3 was not built just for gaming. It is designed to be a set-top system. It can play games, music, and next generation visually enhanced videos. The Playstation3 was designed to be a cost effective way to bring Blu-ray into the homes of millions. They knew most people wont buy a stand-alone Blu-ray player for $1000 (when introduced) just to watch some movies. They incorporated this in the game system; quietly introducing the new format into the population, thereby acquiring the support of millions of people who own PS3. If you bought a PS3, you unknowingly threw a ballet voting support for Blu-ray.
Just by sheer numbers, if PS3 does even half as well as they did with PS2, there will be a much larger market for Blu-ray sales and a much larger support base by industries such as Wal-mart which stated they will not carry HD-DVD?s and Blockbuster which is leaning on the side of Blu-ray, anticipating a win for this format. The game aspect, IMO is not the push Sony is trying to make here, however that was XBOX?s initial intentions. Sony was looking at another marketing scheme. If they sell ?X? amount of PS3 w/Blue-ray capability and the Blu-ray wins the format war, Sony will actually gain a part of the profit margin from future Blu-ray sales and possibly rentals because, well, guess what most people are playing those Blu-ray disks on. <Yawn>? In any case, without being too much cockier with this, buying the PS3 whether it is for gaming or playing High Definition movies, you just can?t loose either way you look at it. The games are just as spectacular on the PS3 as it is on the XBOX. Who cares about the specs of each system; that is trivial. It?s almost comparing me driving my Honda and my friend driving his BMW. The speed limit is still 55miles an hour whether I drive in his car or mine and they are both visually appealing to play (drive that is); woman don?t gravitate to my Honda though? hmmmmm. -
this review goes over thousands of other expert opinions. are you meaning to say that everyone else is wrong and that the x box is more powerfull than the playstation
-
It's OK to me that you do not have enough money to buy a PS3, but please don't write a biased review like this one.
-
This person has no right to criticize an item that had not come out. This is what's wrog with CNET letting people review an item before it comes out!!!
-
your so hipacritical at first you clame the cell does not exist then you bash it with miss leading specs the ps3 is smarter
The xbox360 runs at 1002 GFLOPS total system performance
The ps3 runs at 2018 GFLOPS Total system performance
A FLOP stands for floating piont operations per second 1 GFLOP is 1 billion calculations per second
GET IT STRAIT !!!!!! -
Think about it. The xbox 360 is $400. The bulky hd-dvd drive is $200 (which is not as good as blu-ray). Xbox live is $50 a year and the wirless reciever with a 30 foot range is $20. so were up to $670 with a 20 gig hard drive and only 1 year of xbox live. The playstation 3 has a 60 gig hard drive, a blu-ray player built in, wi-fi built in, and free unlimited acess to the playstation network and also contains bluetooth. Its well worth it. the 20 gig xbox 360 = $670, the 60 GIG ps3= $600. Plus the PLAYSTATION 3 HAS BETTER GRAPHICS. I USED TO OWN AN XBOX 360 AND IT SUCKED. I SOLD IT ON EBAY. THE DIFFERENCE IS AMAZING.

Sometime ago I sat and read Frag Daddy's comments and thought. Wow, sounds like Xbox is better. But then before I decided on a Next Gen console I researched things.
1) Blu-Ray format. 25GB to 50GB storage space on games. Xbox360 decided to stick with regular DVD which is only 8GB. Resistance Fall of man is a 16GB game. Meaning it would require 2 disc to play on Xbox360. Now if the games get bigger and all indications are that they will. Xbox360 will be a multidisc playing system. Or chances are better that the games will be small and Micro$oft will charge for extra content at a fee for you to store on your 20GB HDD. Also the Blu Ray player can play movies in Hi Def 1080p cause PS3 comes with a HDMI port. While Micro$oft wants you to buy a new $199.99 HD-DVD player. (yes this is the same HD-DVD that losing the format wars. goggle Blockbuster/HD-DVD for details. Oh and Pixar will be releasing all of its CGI films in Blu-Ray only.
2) No HDD. Microsoft Decided to make a HDD free version of the 360. This has lead to Developers wondering how to make games all the Xbox Supporters can play. See some games require HDD (Hard Disc Drive). Which means that some Xbox customers can't play them. While Playstation 3 all come with HDD. Now only the 60GB vers is availiable in U.S. cause 20GB is too small.
3)No HDMI. This means means NO 1080p resolution games. Microsoft saw the error in this and made the Xbox 360 Elite. Which has a larger HDD 120GB drive and that HDMI port. Oh well better late than never. course it doesn't do all of those that thought they were getting microsoft best system any good.
and finally Xbox only lasted 5 years. Now Microsoft has stopped production and support of the system. While the Playstation 2 is still being produced and supported by hit titles like God of War 2,Bully and Final Fantasy 12. Cause Sony makes a system for decades. Playstation 1 stopped production just last year. after 11 years. Playstation 2 is ongoing with 7 years so far. So if anyone is following hype its frag daddy. he believe everything that Bill Gates crew says. and we all know how trustworthy he is. -
What are you talking about.
PS3:
8 3.2ghz processors (this means 25.6ghz of power)
360: 3 3,2ghz processors (this means 9.6ghz of power)
plus can the xbox do FULL HD (1080p)? NO!!!!
can the PS3? YES!!!!
its simple u nonce that the ps3 is better than the xbox 360. After all Sony know what they are doing. They sold 110 million PS2s. only 24 million Xboxs have been sold. Thats more than 4 times the amount -
You're obviously a Micosoft mark. Too funny!
-
performance means nothing if the product isnt performing. the 360 is a faulty system, so what if it has better games, processor or whatever. its all about when you turn it on , it comes on. i had both, and honestly i feel more comfortable with the playstation 3. and its just starting, and yet looks just as good as 360. to bury it and give up on it at the start is stupid, and look at xbox 360 at the start. problems, lack of games, and sucky live. same as what ps3 is getting past now
-
you can not compare the specs of the systems side by side, they are too different. The hardware is run in totally different ways. Xbox has cpu's and ps3 has spu's.
-
Sadly, Frag Daddy will never live the PlayStation 3 dream. Oh well!
-
It's too bad you've come to that conclusion Papa. I'm living up the PlayStatation 3 dream as we speak! Hooya!
-
This so called "reviewer" has got to be the dumbest person ever. To talk about a product that wasn't even released yet and acting as if you're the authority on the console that you haven't even seen nor tested,is nothing less than being a complete moron! I really hope one day you are able to afford a PS3 to actually know what it's capable of.
-
Come on, get YOUR facts straight:
The Xbox 360 has 3 3.2 Ghz Cell Processors that pump out 500 million triangles
Impressive, yes.
The PS3 has 8 3.2 Ghz Cell Processors that pump out an astonishing 1 billion triangles!!!
I have no idea where you get your facts, but you better go back and revise them, because the only thing Xbox has on the PS3, is a game line up, and their marketplace. -
u say its expensive? DONT BUY IT THEN! EASY AS THAT. No good titles? GIVE IT SOME TIME..its called BLU-RAY 25Gigs! takes long time to fill all that out unlike 5-10gigs. idiotic stupid people who have no clue how to compare. Gears of War was Released for the Xbox 360 on November 7, 2006...i think it was released a year after the xbox was released...a year eh... YEA and same goes with the HALO 3..o WAIT its coming out in the end of 2007...o0o0o0o0o wait thats then 2 years eh...yea real nice. "Ps3 blows because it dont have no good titles like the xbox has" yea get a life fool
-
ok so the Ps3 does cost alot there's no doubting it does £450, compared to the xbox360.
but for starters i swapped my xbox360 for a ps3 a week ago and i have not been dissapointed here's why......
compared with the xbox360 the ps3 is so quite you can hardly hear it running, unlike the 360 which sounds like a dustbuster.
the games for the xbox360 (in the uk) are poor gears of war maybe but titles such as fifa07 and pro evo 6 (winning 11) are very poor - and to buy a 360 just for that isn't worth it.
xbox live...don't get me started on that....whoopy do you can download demo's movies etc for free.....but hang on a min your are actually paying for xbox live to start with so there making there money back anyway.
bought my ps3 and the day i got it was online (resistance fall of man) for free may i add. also coming soon is the "home" free gaming thing which you download to your hdd, which will be the proverbial bye bye to the 360.
the added features in my oppinion like backwards compatiblity of ps1 and ps2 games - unlike the 360 where most title arn't supported or you have to upgrade to the premium console in order to be able to play. also things which make i worth it while wifi, blu-ray, a built in HDD all included in the price.....if you buy a xbox 360 premium £250 + then your wifi adapter £50 + then your High definition dvd player £150 + your xbox live £100 + for one year add that all up son shine and its £550 then you have to buy a game extra £50 and a wireless controller and charger £50....hang on a min that £650 thats £200 more expensive.. work it out for yourself.
buy a ps3 stopped getting ripped of by microsoft, windows xp and vista are doing that enough already. -
Since your first review, which was too premature to be taken even with a grain of salt, most if not all of your statements have been shot down (and blown to bits on impact as well).
So, maybe next time you leave a review telling everybody to get their facts straight, you will actually come up with something better to bring to the table (like actual facts that aren't also too premature) or you could just not give a review which would seriously help us all out. -
You can't review a product if you don' it or before it even
comes OUT!!!!!!!!!! -
form the tone of you article
you can tell you are just an avid 360 fan
even in these early stages of development the ps3 is showing it can more tha mach up to the 360 -
This forum is not to discuss how the game mfg. companies are marketing their games at the trade shows. This is for real world comments about people who actually have a Sony Playstation 3. Being one of those people, I can tell you that the console is awesome. It is worth the money just because it is the least expensive Blue-Ray player on the market and an excellent one at that. However, on top of that game play is great too! Yes, there are only a few good games out there as yet because the game companies have not caught up yet (this is normal with all new consoles). You can also surf the web wirelessly, play your SACDs and store bunches of photos, music, games and who knows what else. Yes it is expensive but look what you are getting.
Remember, we are talking about game consoles here and their is not a better one on the market now than the Playstation 3. -
Trying to argue that the X-box 360 is beter then the PS3 is a lost cause, their is nothing beter about the X-box 360, in fact everything about the PS3 is beter in everyway possible.
-
Even if one console is stronger than the other, you cant rate the performance that way. It's all up to the developers of the games. If they find out better tricks to use the power. Look at criterion ( http://www.criteriongames.com/ , the makers of burnout. They developed burnout first on the ps2. Used a bunch of graphical tricks in order to make one of the better looking games. So I don't find that it matters what the specs are.
-
To see why the PS3 smokes the x-box 360, go read about the cell processor here: http://www.blachford.info/computer/Cell/Cell0_v2.html
Then check out the MotorStorm website: www.motorstorm.com
Read "Episode 4" - The Power of PLAYSTATION®3
I have the Demo of MotorStorm on my PS3 and it is freaking unbelievable. The download demo is a later version than the one in the stores. I've ran the track for hours with not a single drop in frame rate. The graphics are so amazing that when I land a jump it feels like I bruised my spleen. The final release of MotorStorm come out in March or April, no one will doubt the power of the PS3 after then. The other games out now are converted games and only using 20% of the PS3 power. Plus the comment about RAM doesn't matter, if the CPU runs the graphics thought fast enough the RAM is free again. It's all about new architecture. The cell really is much better than conventional processors, read the proof! Just Google for the facts. -
"doesn't exist yet" is not a viable and plausable reason to give a system a 4. As it is I have to pay 200 bucks to get the HD DVD adapter for 360 when it's already built in my PS3. Get out of here!
-
All of these "Facts" are lies. None of them are true except for the CGIs and ALL next gen video games have pre rendered trailers. This person is obviously a biased fanboy. I encourage everyone to report this. I'm not saying the ps3 is perfect, or better, but there are lies.
-
Sure, they build a system one year after the x-box 360 technology and made it slower? Are you people crazy! Read the facts! The PS3 is awesome, with totally different architecture (you can't compare RAM or CPU power because the whole throughput is different!) Go read about "MotorStorm" and how they are using the PS3 power. When MotorStorm is released in April, all this discussion will be over! www.motorstorm.com, read Episode 4 - "The Power of PLAYSTATION®3"
-
Nintendo is giving us all something to agree on. Anything is better than Wii!
-
I know cnet is going by a strictly technology standpoint but they are misleading in there analysis. The ps3 with all its processing power and technology is actually harder to develop for and in a war when cross platforming is key developers arent in favor of ps3. Games released on both xbox 360 and ps3 actually player better on xbox360. The difference in buying a system should be for games not power like the ds;s dominance over the psp. Exclusives are key and with mass effect, bioshock, halo 3, gears of war, and xbox live u cant see the ps3 as an opinion even if you were loyal in the past.
-
have em both side by side the ps3 is the king . you made your opinion based on ? your review is well before the PS3 ever arrived some how you saw in your crystal ball and made your bias review .
-
PS3 is flawless & you get a blu ray cheap & theres over 169 blu ray movies out! go see newegg.com & its HDMI 1080p xbox3 is not & it does not over heat & melt down like xbox3 which has a class action law suit out for that & PS3 you can play free on line unlike thief microsoft xbox3 who charges & hes the richest nerd in the world. etc.....
-
The PlayStation 3 is a lowend computer and a highend gaming console. This wasn't a review and wasn't helpful at all you didn't even say anything with your experience with the console at all. All you are is just anyother fan boy who over does things with the console wars.
-
Come play my PS3... I'll go play your X-Box. Who gives a F**K? In the end it's the games that matter anyway.
-
I can't believe these Cnet idiots gave the system an 8.8. They must be getting paid by Sony.
-
I mean what happened to gameplay matters more than graphics??
-
thats right 360 rocks . ps3 is jus a buncch of bull**** sony should learn to tell the truth
-
you (xbox fanboy) think you knwo weverything first of all the playstation 3 has 7 processing cores that can run in PARRALELL plus 1 buck up core to stop it form crashing or to just run in the background. Also i wonder since ur not biased why didnt you mention the fact that the playstation 3 has a larger harddrive and high-definition movie support out of the box while the xbox 360 you have to pay over $200 for an HD-dvd drive which doesn't look like it will win. Since ur stating that hwo come one of the developers of Killzone said that as of the current progress with the game the game its self has exceeded the trailer graphically? and if u wona keep going with this xbox360 is better than ps3 stuff look at the trailers for games that are on both consoles and u will see that the playstation 3 is at the same graphicall level and the games are the first ones to come out while the xbox 360 is on its second year which means its allmost at full potential while the ps3 has a while to go to reach its full potential. You ever ask yourself that fan boy?
-
I don't know what to buy? I am really confused. Xbox360 have its own overheating issues and some other stuff.
And PS3 has some issues. Can you guys help me to make a disicion? -
Why do you make a statement about "bashing the 360"? We are here for a review, not to bash the 360, and unless you OWN the machine dont make a review.
With the PS2 and the xbox releases, people like you did the same thing. Claimed how better the xbox was.
Well in the end, having owned both systems i got FAR more out of the PS2. Looking at the features and the future, i feel the playstation has more going for it. -
Why can't we just say they are both very powerful systems. The cell processor was built strictly just for the ps3 but who knows. I think the ps3 has greater potential than the xbox 360 but I can't predict the future. No one can.
-
ok first of even if u dont care about the game system u get a blue ray player for 45% off lets see your 360 do that
-
I just thought I would add my thoughts on this subject.
They are both amazing systems and buy what you want, not what some people are telling you to.
As for the DVD issue, let me give you some advice.
I work for Imation Corp. out of Oakdale, MN.
That is the corp. office, and the R&D.
They are currently producing both HD and BR DVD because they are not sure which way the market is going to swing. Reports show that HD is selling more. In my opinion that's just because of the name associated with the DVD. In time, I feel the BR will be the way to go.
What I'm getting at is by the time the consumers decide which they prefer and it gets into full production, there will be a new "better" gaming system out that will be geared for what the market is.
Sony is a huge client and the reason they give these options is because they don't know what will happen.
Personaly, I will by a seperate DVD player for either BR or HD. I know this will be costly, but I don't like the idea the if my PS3 or XBOX 360 break, die, burn, or whatever, I don't only lose the ability to play games, but can't watch my movies or go on the net or what ever else I might lose.
Why do I need one system to do everything.
If you ask me, these gaming systems are going to get just as anoying as cell phones.
All I want is a phone that can make a call, I don't care if it can play music, shoot pictures, take video...just make a damn call.
Samething here...Just give me the best gaming system that you can. Don't bog it down with other features that I already have other equipment for.
Just my thoughts. -
That falls about as low as the bunch of people who think that Sony copied off Xbox and the Wii
-
In its day, the Dreamcast outshined, outperformed, out-whatevered its main competitor: the Playstation 1. But in the end its supposed "superiority" amounted to a big NOTHING. The PS1, primitive as was compared to the DC, still emerged victorious.
So tech specs superiority really amounts to NOTHING in the end as far as consoles are concerned.
In the end the console gamers will be looking for nice games, not nice specs -
It always seems as if xbox in general, never puts out near as many games as the playstations, I have always bought xbox, but it is not as mainstream, smaller selections in stores, rental places, etc... While their games always seem to blow away the ps systems, Playstation always has more available, even if some of the games are very similiar, they reach a bigger audience overall. I just wish xbox would keep up on the front lines with game selections. They are always lagging. They out perform, but the do not merchandise as well. They also need to come up with a better control for 1st person shooters. I have yet to find one that can come anywhere near the experience of playing 1st p-shooters on a desktop with a mouse and keyboard, even if its bulky, reaction time with the mouse is much faster than a gamepad.
