"Fantastic technology but at a high price"
Pros: Blu-ray playback, multi-media hub, HDMI 1.3, High-def games, full backwards compatibility with PS2
Cons: Very expensive, few truly innovative games, Cell is hard to develop for, incomplete as a media center (it's best role, I'd say), some fan noise distracts from media playback
Summary: I am very happy with my 60 gig PS3, which I bought before the newer, less backwards-compatible models emerged. since I got a refurbished on in fine condition I got a bargain, paying the $400 a 40 gig would have been.
I use it a lot, for music, dvds, seeing photos on my 46-inch Sharp LCD (amazing), surfing the internet and more recently, seeing hi-def divx, too. When I can rent them, I'll be watching blu-rays on it for sure, but not too many I want to buy as yet.
As for games, seemingly the main thing, it lags far behind the other systems. I have Racket and Clank, which has been great fun, and Drake's adventure- which has gorgeous graphics, but predictable gameplay amongst others. But just go to Metacritic to see the sorry story thus far- only a couple over 90% and these are generally cross-platform. It just hasn't taken off as a games player and it is uncertain if it ever really will (though the victory of Blu-ray has meant a substantial boost towards this end). The Cell processor may be innovative, but it is hard for developers to adapt to and without doing so, the dated 'RSX' graphics card becomes a liability.
I recently got a Wii too and that is a LOT more fun, whilst the badly made 360 has a library of classics- in gaming, the beautiful PS3 still find itself in no-mans land, though this will hopefully change.
Get it if you want all the functions and a bit of gaming. If you just want games and nothing in the library appeals to you, you may want to look at the other consoles too. I love mine and am a big supporter, but not especially for the pretty but lackluster games.
