• "The Portable Adults Have Been Waiting For"

Pros: Movies, Music and PS2 gaming on the go, all wrapped up in a clean and well thought out design that mature gamers won't be embarrassed to play on the subway or airplane.

Cons: Could be the death of the over-rated iPod...finally.

Summary: This is the portable gaming device mature gamers have been waiting for. Forget CNET's always gloomy opinions. Pointing out that the machine uses Sony's exclusive UMD format is silly...all portables use their own exclusive format (Nintendo is still using cartridges in the 5th version of the portable device so why point the finger at Sony alone). What you have here is the swiss arm knife of portable gaming, the ability to play PS2 quality games on the perfect LCD screen or accessing movies or music make this the perfect travel companion. Add in Wifi and Memory Stick Duo and you have a real winner. I owned a DS and I can tell you that using the touch screen as an analogue controller is both difficult and buggy, beside the DS is as ugly as portable gaming gets both in design as well as grapics and so far all we have seen from the system is a bevy of childrens games. Finally I'll have a portable system I can play on the airplane during business trips and not have to blush with embarrassement over. As for the battery...well we are talking about a company who manufactures MP3 players that truly do get 70 hours out of a single AAA battery so you can expect to see more powerful and longer stamina cells releasing in the distant future, besides you can just swap the battery out with a freshly charged one if needed (something you can't do with the DS). This is the must have item for 2005.

you covered all the points. I had my psp for over a year now and nintendo has come out the ds and the other slimer version of it (the same made smaller and still bulky) and yet can not be consider a challenger for the psp. I think that the DS was never aiming on adults to buy their products, other wise would of had made some games that exclude mario (I had it with him) and start making some adrenaline starter games such as real sport games and stuff like that. And the thing about cnet bugging on the use of umds. Perhaps its true that paing as much as a real dvd for a umd that can only be played on the psp doesn't pay off but you are not forced to, just convert your videos and put them in your memorystick which is down to 80 dollards for 1gb and you could fit with no problems a couple of movies there, every company makes consumers carry their cross otherwise ask apple for their exclusive Ipod tunes.
The battery, come on people there is a battery for those of you that can not take your hands out of the psp or that want to find a weak spot to point it out. The new battery can double the rated battery life of the original for 30 dollards.

In the bottom line there is no portable device(playing plataform) that can be parallel to the psp, nintendo has its 5th and 6th generation on the market and yet didn't make the impact that one sony device did in terms of hype, revolution and sells.
This plataform is definetely the greates portable gaming system to date and lets see what the updates have to add to what I said.

Very true. For CNET to bash Sony for the whole UMD thing is stupid, every company has its propriertary formats - Nintendo has the cartridges, Apple has the AAC and iTunesDB systems on the iPod..and lets not even get started with MS Windows!

I'm also looking forward to finally using a handheld that offers the same sort of adult games that we've come to expect from Sony/PS2 and Microsoft/Xbox, especially that in a stylish and sophisticated design.

My only worry with it is the reliability. Sony aren't exactly renowned for their products being sturdy on launch...

Be ashamed of a video game system based on its looks? Any gamer can tell you that its not the looks, its the funtionality that is important. The PSP is a great system, though. Just Don't say the PSP is Better, Because the PSP and the DS are totally different, and thus, incomparible. And for the record, The DS is not a bad system. Niether one is.
