"Not bad for a console"
Summary: I just bought an XBOX so as to keep the kids in the house away from my PC. A little background about my position. My last console was a Colecovision system way back in the early days of gaming. Since then, I've stayed away from console gaming in favor of PC gaming. The games are smarter in PC arena, plus the graphics are much better. Games in which all you need to do is hit a button really fast do not impress. I build my own PCs and pride myself on overclocking them to their very limits. Coming home and finding my OS FUBARed by my kids is not something I particularly enjoyed, thus the reason for purchasing a console. After much research, I decided to go with an XBOX. None of the other consoles available on the market offer the crisp level of graphical detail that the XBOX is able to render. The sound using the HDTV optional kit along with a fiber-optic output to my receiver tickeled my audiophile nerve very nicely. DVD playback, though not offering progressive scan, is really not all too bad. The games, not all, but a few of the ones I've rented or bought thus far are pretty smart and quite challenging. Sure beats Popeye on the Coloecvision but still can't match Half-Life, CounterStrike or Soldier Of Fortune II on the PC. PS2 and Gamecube were nice, but the quality of the gaming experience was much more evident with the XBOX. Yes, the other consoles do have market share now, but so did a company called NOVELL back in the 80's when a little upstart called Microsoft jumped in on their turf. Now, my server room at work is all Microsoft driven, with a little UNIX still sprinkled in. More and more games are becoming available, I do not see the common 'perceived' notion that there aren't enough games out there to justify passing over an XBOX when choosing a particular console. To anyone seeking a graphically rich, immersive, and highly impressive gaming system I would highly recommend an XBOX.
