    "Pure. Fun."

by SerranoSlim on May 20, 2005

Pros: Joy to drive, great design, customizable, gas mileage, instant hit with friends and co-workers.

Cons: Like any convertible, not quiet. Dealer markups are increasing.

Summary: "Pure" really describes the car well. Unlike bloated SUVs, vans, and heavy "sport coupes" this is a car designed for driving fun. Every drive, every day, is f-u-n. Excellent design in every aspect -- the top can open a sunroof section while still up. Folds flat behind the rear-seat rollbars so it doesn't take space from the trunk. Rear seats not only fold down to create more usable space, but can also lock in the up position to keep trunk contents secure. Endlessly customizable so your Mini can be really unique.

No wasted space, but plenty for two people or young family, comfortable even for very tall drivers (up to 6'7"). If you want to drive hard or race on the weekends, go with the "S" supercharger and stick, sport seats and suspension, maybe add the JC Works package. But such drivers probably won't go for the convertible. For more typical drivers, the non-supercharged CVT automatic is lighter and still moves like a cat, can be shifted like a 6-speed, has a spare tire, and the non-sport seats are more comfortable. Gas mileage is outstanding, though it requires premium gas the cost-per-mile is still lower than anything but a hybrid.

The optional stereo with DSP sounds great, optional GPS nav system is excellent (NavTeq maps, Fodor's info), prewired for XM. Everything integrates with with nav system's 16:9 display in dash. Radio and nav screen can display iPod tracks, steering wheel audio buttons control it, too. For iPod and Bluetooth integration, go with third-party solutions. Car-PC integrations are available from other vendors too.
