"It's like being Ashlee Simpson"
Pros: It's not made in China
Cons: It's not a 911
Summary: You say you're a doctor, and people go "OH!", then you say you're a chiropractor, and they go "oh"....
Same with this car. You drop a bunch of cash, and tell your friends you own a Porsche, only to disappoint a second later with the fact it's a boxter.
The older aircooled 911 costs less and is more fun to drive, and that car will still get you more "cred" than a new boxter S.
You may only get one chance in your life to own a Porsche. Make sure it's a real one.

ned's comment is very sophomoric. it's not about impressing somebody with a name (which clearly ned is only concerned about). it's about having a high-performance car which has withstood the test of time. the boxster is just that.

I own a 2006 Boxster S, and it outperforms in handling any of the current Porsches, and out accelerates the Carrera from 4-5 years ago (excepting the Turbos/GT3s).
I belong to a Porsche club too, and no -one gives any of the Boxster owners any attitude. -
Ned's comment below is ridiculous. This is not a 911 and doesn't try to be. It's a mid-engine car and is Porsche's revival (revisit) of the classic sypder models. Anyone who has driven both the 911 and the Boxster immediately can feel how differently these cars handle - I've actually had a 911 owner second guess his purchase after driving my Boxster S.
The Boxter S is an exceptional car and is continually recognized by car magazines for its unbelievable handling and its wonderful sounding exhaust note. Driving this car in the slow lane should be a ticketable offense.
The CNET review was incorrect in describing the speaker system; it has 11 speakers with a sub-woofer...the sub-woofer is that speaker right between the two seats almost at ear level. While the speaker system is very good, admittedly not much can be heard over the engine of this car running high RPM's with the top off and windows down.
This car is best (truly mindblowing, actually) when being pushed to it's limits on a quiet back road. I recommend the top down and radio off so that you can completely take in the sounds of this impressive car. Although the new Boxsters are even better looking with the larger air intake, revised interior, if you're so concerned with the Ned's of the world evaluating your bank account, you might hold out for a 911.
In either case, if you like performance driving, whether you get a Boxster, Cayman or 911 you should absolutely get a S model. I'll likely pick up a 911 someday, but do admit to being worried that I'm going to miss much of what makes the Boxter S so special.
Recommendation: Get a Boxter S, a membership to www.pashnit.com's California Motorcycle Roads area and experience the two in the wee hours of the morning...it's too much. -
Not sure what his frame of reference is. I had a 2005 Boxster S and now a 2007 Boxster S. I have driven a 2004 and 2005 911 convertible-one an automatic and one a 6-spd. My Boxsters were much more fun to drive and the "fun per $" was much better. I have owned a Mercedes, several BMW's and a '98 Corvette. My '07 Boxster is my favorite. My objective down the road is to own a 911 Turbo cabriolet.
