Actively engaged in expanding its already ample model line, the 2007 Volkswagen Eos fills a narrow gap between the Golf and the Passat. The Eos seems designed mostly around its retractable hardtop, with highly visible lines where parts of the roof meet. The technology in the roof is interesting from a mechanical viewpoint: Composed of five pieces, it stows itself away in about 25 seconds. The Eos offers some other interesting options, such as navigation, cornering headlights, and a 600-watt stereo system. Although the Eos was announced with four available gas engines, ranging from 115 horsepower to 250 horsepower, and one diesel engine, it will probably have only the 200-horsepower or the 250-horsepower engine in its U.S. release, which should come in spring 2006.

Upside: A five-piece, retractable hardtop roof is interesting in a car of this class, but we don't imagine too many people will be excited about it. That said, the 2007 Volkswagen Eos is certainly practical in states that experience real winters and summers. The cornering-headlights option is another surprise for this market segment; Volkswagen is introducing technologies previously reserved for higher-end cars. Navigation is optional in the Eos, and the interface for it is fairly simple to use. With the 250-horsepower V-6, the Climatronic system is available, which adjusts the environmental controls depending on whether the top is up or down. Its 600-watt stereo system with 10 speakers should make up for even freeway noise with the top down. Another advantage of the V-6 engine is the standard DSG double-clutch gearbox, an option with the four-cylinder, 200-horsepower FSI engine.

Downside: The body style of the 2007 Volkswagen Eos lies somewhere between bland and ugly. It's very utilitarian, designed to accommodate passengers and its hardtop, with little thought given to aesthetics. Although the engine choices are more than adequate, the power train isn't particularly revolutionary. Also, putting the hardtop down nearly halves the cargo space, taking it from 13.4 cubic feet down to 7.2 cubic feet. The Eos offers no Bluetooth cell phone integration or steering-wheel controls, forcing the driver to reach toward the center dash to make climate and audio adjustments.

Outlook: The 2007 Volkswagen Eos's odd looks will probably keep it from having the success of the New Beetle, but looks aside, the Eos offers a lot of practicality and some real tech niceties. The hardtop protects the car in harsh weather and can quickly become a fun-in-the-sun machine. The V-6 combined with the DSG gearbox is a great combination, and we usually don't see tech, such as navigation and cornering headlights, even offered in this segment.

Love my 2009 Eos. Has more room than others like it.

Pros: I love the moon roof/convertible feature, the turbo engine, GPS. The seats are comfy for me (petite )& sufficient for a all man). The safety belt strap is great & allows me to advance the seat & still reach the safety belt. Mine is a 2009 m

Cons: My bluetooth feature does not always recognize my commands, I do speak upl, even when the top is up & windows shut. I wish I knew where the microphone was. It doesn't always connect with the phone and I am not sure why? Wish it were a 4 door.

Review: Love the car. Gave up my Mazda Miata convertible and a Buick Allero for it with no regrets. Don't go into a high power car wash but the soft cloth ones are fine. Be be patient with the turbo feature as it may take a lighter touch than you are used to. The front wheel drive makes it safer than the other more expensive models for folks in the nother east like me.

3 years and love it

Pros: Quick get-up-and-go, sporty look, a true convertible, relatively large trunk with the top up and even storage room with top down, great audio system, a blast to drive.

Cons: VW's relatively pricey scheduled maintenance.

Review: My wife has had the 2007 EOS for 3 years and it is still a blast to drive. Love the hardtop and it's very quiet at any speed when up. Then put the top down (very quick I might add) and it's fun fun fun! Even after 3 years I love to drive it everytime I find an excuse to get behind the wheel. Teenager daughter just got her license and no surprise, she refused to drive our other vehicle.
When shopping for this car, my wife (driving a minivan at that time) wanted a convertible, and VW was top of her list even before the EOS had arrived in showrooms. I was set on talking her into buying a 2007 BMW 3 series soft top ...and then I drove the EOS. To my surprise, the EOS blew away the BMW convertible and Volvo hard top.
Would we buy the EOS again knowing what we know today? Absolutely. Like I said, 3 years old and it's fun to drive every time I get behind the wheel.

EOS great car.. but leaks water from roof

Pros: Interior seats, radio and roof operation is great

Cons: Leaks water from roof

Review: The vehicle is very nice, but continued to have water leaks. Volkswagen excutive staff when called did not appear to care about the water leak problem or its customers. Use caution when buying this vehicle as the dealership and VW factory may not support you when it comes time to replace it.

Cute & Practical -vs- Sleek & Sexy

Pros: Sporty, Fast, Sun-Worshiping dream...

Cons: Not Sleek - limited trunk space

Review: I did my due dilligence.. Seems everyone is producing a hardtop convertible this year. I looked at models from the Mercedes SLK to the Lexus 430 & Volvo C70. Then on a whim I looked at the VW Eos.

Bottom Line: For $10K more, the Mercedes was Sexy, for $25K more the Lexus was Cushy but for $33K total, the Eos had more luxury features than the SLK, and had more off the line pep than the 430. I bought the 2.0 Turbo with the Luxury Package and this car turns heads. It also has a slick Sport Shift alternative that does 80mph in 3rd gear (its a 6 speed tranny.) It also gets me 33mpg on the highway when I don't floor it.

The VW Eos is feature rich German engineering at it's best. I highly recommend it.

A SLEEK, SEXY AND POWERFUL RIDE...EITHER WITH THE TOP UP OR DOWN!

Pros: VERY WELL CRAFTED, NICE CHOICE OF MATERIALS

Cons: REAR-WINDOW VISIBILITY/BLIND SPOT ANNOYING

Review: I LOVE MY EOS TI. THE "PROFESSIONAL" REVIEWER MISSED THE BOAT AND THE RIVER WITH HIS REVEIW OF THIS WONDERFUL NEW CAR.

CALLING IT AN UGLY DUCKLING IS NOT ONLY AN INSULT, BUT HIGHLY INACCURATE. THIS IS A VERY APPEALING AND SLEEK CAR...DEFINITELY A SWAN. HE ALSO SAID IT WOULD HAVE LIMITED APPEAL WITH IT'S HARD-TOP CONVERTIBLE DESIGN. I HAVE TO SAY HE IS AN IDIOT. THE WHOLE CONCEPT IS THE HARD-TOP CONVERT. I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED ONE, BUT STEERED CLEAR BECAUSE OF SAFTELY ISSUES AND VANDALS. PROBLEM SOLVED!

THIS IS A LITTLE CAR, BUT PERFORMS LIKE A MUCH LARGER VEHICLE. TONS OF POWER, CONTROL AND WONDERFUL FEATURES. I WISH MY DRIVE TO WORK WAS LONGER THAN 15 MINUTES!

What is CNET talking about this car is beautiful!

Pros: It drives like and dream and is extremely peppy

Cons: no cons....I wish I would have gotten it sooner!!!

Review: This is not an ugly car!! You need glasses!
This car is peppy and fun to drive. It looks alot nicer than the volvo or mercedes.

Its wonderful! Love it.

CNET should stick to reviewing computers ... this is a great car!

Pros: Performance, fun factor, convenience (especially for Northern climate), price (in class)

Cons: Guess the back seat could be a bit bigger ...

Review: I suppose the old saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" applies here. The CNET reviewer thinks that the EOS is an "ugly duckling" with "bland" and "utilitarian" lines. I think it's beautifully sleek, clean and elegantly simple. This is a matter of opinion, and there's no wrong or right answer, but many of the other things suggested in this review are just plain WRONG and/or DECEPTIVE.

The reviewer writes that the powertrain on this car "isn't particularly revolutionary". Hmm, 200 HP + 207 ft/lbs of torque, out of a 2.0L Turbo engine, with no noticable turbo lag, and 23 MPG city / 31 highway. Yeah, sounds like a dog of an engine (heavy sarcasm). Tranny wise, you get the choice of a classic 6 speed manual with overdrive, or a 6 speed tiptronic with optional F1 style steering wheel paddles for up and downshifting. Again ... how "bland", what was VW thinking? ;)

And why would anyone be interested in the hardtop roof on this car (as the reviewer implies)? After all, it's the ONLY one in this class that features full convertible, full sedan, and sunroof modes. It also leaves you with over 7 cu. feet of storage space when stowed away (compare that to the Pontiac G6 where you have trouble stowing a sheet of typewriter paper with the roof down) and it does so WITHOUT creating an ugly bulge in the trunk section (as many other convertibles, especially hardtops, tend to). Awful, boring idea this roof (more heavy sarcasm).

If you're looking for a car that will double as a practical Northern climate coupe, and a fun-in-the-sun sportster, it's hard to make a better choice. With either the 2.0T or the 3.2L engine EOS develops sportscar like accelaration. It's handling is crisp and firm, although the suspension is admittedly NOT as hard as on a "serious" sportscar (you can make your own judgement about whether this is a good or a bad thing). The sound system on the EOS is excellent (even the base system) and the cabin is well thought out and comfortable. Visibility is as good, if not better, than many competitors (I felt positively claustrophic in a Toyota Solara convertible). Admittedly, this is not a Lincoln Towncar. If you want to fit 6 people, or someone who is 6'9" in the back seat, look elsewhere. However, two average size adults certainly CAN fit comfortably in the back seat on an in town ride (without being trained contortionists).

All in all, I'm thrilled with my EOS and I think you will be too. As a parting thought ... you might be interested in knowing that while EOS retails for $30-40ish here in the U.S. you would expect to pay about $20K MORE for this car in Europe! To me that's a pretty darn good value ...

I'm in love with my car!

Pros: fun, sporty, fuel efficient, comfy, fairly intuitive

Cons: none so far! Well, ok, the sunroof is pretty noisy, but still a cool option in a convertable

Review: After more than 7000 mostly cross country miles, but plenty of "sunday driving" as well, I still love this car. I'm averaging 29.5 mpg, which could stand to be better (the only reason I didn't give it a 10) but the power and cornering in this car make it fun to drive, and with room for 4 as well as enough useable trunk space to accomodate everything we needed for a 10 day trip to Seattle from Springfield, Missouri, my Eos gets compliments and envious comments everywhere I go. Its easy to park and make tight u-turns, but there's plenty of leg room. Even the back seats are ok, though I certainly didn't buy this car for its sheer cubic feet of space! I find everything about my Eos to be quality made, and even my picky mechanic thinks it was a great choice (though changing the oil took a little longer for him than it did on my Grand Prix...) The sun roof is pretty noisy when fully open, and I wish I could have even more control over my ipod from the console, but since I didn't even notice I HAD an ipod adaptor at first, and the sunroof is a bonus in a convertable, I don't find these to detract from my overall LOVE for my 2007 VW Eos. :)

What A Car! VW you have a winner!

Pros: Hard Top at an affordable price

Cons: Hard to find in this car

Review: Unbelievable car for the price. Your reviewer needs glasses. My Wife fell in love with it--mainly because she has alway wanted a hard top convertible but the good looking ones were too expensive. I agree with other comments that a hard top prevents the usual knife slash in the roof. We live in the Tropical North of Queensland so this car will be used to its full potential. Did I forget to mention the extras in the car? Well better not start or this comment will take too long.

poorly constructed

Pros: fun handling

Cons: not well made

Review: One week after buying this car, I bumped into a curb at 3 miles per hour. The result $1400 worth of damage!
The EOS (and apparently some other VW's) have a 1/8" plastic radiator support that runs along the front of the under carriage. It is nbot well protected. I have never had this kind of problem with any other car in 30 years of driving (and presumably hitting a curb every now and then).
Also, aftr owning the car for a month I am already having rattles and squeaks in the roof.
Another brilliant design is that the windows seem to rub against roof causing a slight drag when opening and closing the doors. This seems to be intentional, or so the dealer says, and is only a minor annoyance, but is reflective of VW's inattention to detail.
Also, so far mileage is coming in well below the EPA rating.
Lastly, if my prior experience with VW is any guide, the VW will not hold up as well as comparable cars from other manufacturers. I would instead look at the Volvo, Toyota, etc. before this car.

CNET jumps gun, misses mark

Pros: Hardtop convertible, fast, sporty

Cons: None so far

Review: I'm glad I didn't read this horribly inaccurate review before I bought my EOS yesterday.

First, the car looks great! My wife fell in love with this at first sight. I was blown away to find a hardtop convertible at this price range.

Second, this car is LOADED with features. Reading the owners manual was eye-opening because there are so many features the salesperson didn't cover a fraction of them. This car is more tweaked than a more expensive but comparable Audi or BMW. A convertible with a sunroof? Someone let the engineers at VW loose on this car.

Third, the car hauls ass (I own the 2.0 turbo). The paddle shifters (or sport setting) are a blast. The handling is stiff (maybe too stiff for some), but we couldn't wait to get this on a twisty road.

I never bought a convertible because I didn't want to see the inevitable knife slash in the roof, the EOS gives me a hard-top convertible that is a blast to drive at the price lower than a sedate Euro sedan.

Best convertible with out Compromises!

Pros: Lots of standard features on the 3.2 V6

Cons: Customer Service is the worst! They need to learn from Japan.

Review: Really like all the features and possibilities of the Eos. The optional technology package is a must even if it's just for the parking sensors. The HID lights have a corner marker feature in addition to the main headlights turning up to 15 degres. The power in the 3.2 is awesome and no waiting.
The Volvo is a wanna be next to this car!

Great car for the money, No other hard top in this price range can compare

Pros: Affordable hard top with sun roof, spacious back seat, nice interior

Cons: .Bluetooth doesn’t work in USA, drivers side window rolls down randomly, need to double check the windows before leaving your car

Review: Im leasing this car. Decided on leasing since it is a new car and is sure to have some glitches. I have owned it for 1 month now. Within the first 2 weeks the hard top malfunctioned and I had it in the shop for repair (result was a pin popped out and needed to be put back into place)this prevented the hard top from going back up. VW was amazing in the fact they took care of me right away and it was fixed within 3 days and provided a free rental car. Also the car has 3 recalls which were minor 1/stereo update 2/speedometer updates 3/climate control updates. Also 1 major flaw which the tech guys are unable to correct at this time is the passenger side window tends to roll down randomly when exiting the car. On two occasions my car was at risk for break in until I figured out what was going on, when I talked to the sales guy they said all of their epos’s do this, and its because of the sensors and pinch tensions in the window (safety for fingers and so forth) Also I was told the Bluetooth option on the steering wheel doesn’t work in the USA yet. Bummer would have been a nice feature; maybe the 08's will have this working. Also would have been nice to be able to have better operational controls for ipod, the only way you can play the ipod is thru a stereo headphone jack located in the glove box, not too convenient, I prefer it in the center console myself. So you have to run the cord to where I want it. Surprisingly the trunk space is ample considering the top is stored there when it’s down. The back seat fits 2 people comfortably and 3 not so comfortably. For a two door car Im impressed with the space back there. My roomie and I are both 6ft tall and we fit back there just fine. I love the control of this vehicle and the turbo 2.0 is nice. I didn’t get the GPS, which I regret now. Well that’s my take on this car, hope it helps!

CNET couldn't be more wrong

Pros: The EOS is a blast

Cons: Small trunk with top down

Review: But the small trunk isn't why you get one of these great looking cars. It's about the looks and the fun and having the best of both worlds - hardtop and convertible. The handling is impeccable. Comfort is first rate. Power is a perfect match for this car. It absolutely lives up to very high German standards. In fact, it's near impossible to find someting wrong with this car. CNET, please reassign the reviewer to something they might do better - like sweep floors or something because they sure DON'T know anything about this car. The reviewer couldn't be more wrong if they tried!!

Our EOS has steering wheel controls that seem to control nearly everything short of tire pressure. The top of the line stereo is MUCH better than the Bose system in our 2007 Avalanche and it's darn good. We just find nothing about this car not to like.

My "luxury version" Eos has steering column controls

Pros: Rear seat space compared to other HT & ST convertibles, large sunroof, adequate power

Cons: Trunk space

Review: This is the car my wife wanted 6 years ago when she bought a Jetta just before the small Lexus came out. She loves everything about it. It is a VW which means "fun to drive" but expect some time in the shop. We bought it as our fun car to complement our family utilitarian vehicle (near luxury large sedan). So far it's a joy to experience.

Just bought one. Love It !!!!!!!!!!!!

Pros: Acceleration, low noise, comfort, gorgeous

Cons: Haven't found any

Review: I just bought the Eos. In fact its the same color as this photo. It is a fun, stylish, solid car. With the top down wind noise and buffeting is minimal. Audio system is awesome. The 2 liter turbo will get up and fly when you need it. During cornering and high speed driving the car feels like it planted on the road. As far as dependability, I have no doubts about VW quality. I owned a 1985 Golf for 16 years. Finally got rid of it with over 500,000 miles on the original motor. I have never owned an American or any other car that lasted anywhere close to that.
I just bought a Honda 4 months ago and as soon as I test drove the Eos I fell in love. The Honda is history.
Updated
I loved this car until 2 weeks ago. The entire turbo system blew up. Just cruising down the highway when BOOOOOOM! Now its 4-6 weeks for new system parts. My rating and my love for this car have fallen down to a 3. I am so pissed off that VW is taking so long for parts. After only 5000 miles my car is a POS. BUY WITH CAUTION AND AN EXTENDED WARRANTY!!!!!!!!!!

Dude what are you talking about?

Pros: Great feature-value price ratio

Cons: No rear seat space, but what would you expect in a convertible

Review: The reviewer here is way off on many counts. First off the Eos is available NOW! I just looked at one (Dirito Bros. Concord,CA). Also these cars were never expected to be under 30k. They are under cutting the likes of Volvo C7, Saab 93, and VW's sister company's Audi A4 which shares the Eos frame. Safety features are plenty like front and side airbags in a convertible guys which are important selling points. It shares the company's 2.0L Turbo which is a great engine no matter which trannie you connect it to! There a plenty more features that should have been mentioned in the initial review, but I guess we can always checkout the Road & Track review.

Fun Car (when I can get it away from the wife)

Pros: Nimble, Adequate Power (2.0T) Great Lines!

Cons: No choice of Satellite Radio service, Sirius only

Review: Only had the EOS for a few days, fits right in with my Geek personality. Took it up one windy Montana mountain road, wife drove up and I drove down, handles like a dream even though it is equiped with the Tip-Tronic Xmission. I am too old for a motorcycle so this is my BMW bike. The freedom and convince of the flip top out weighs the thril of 2 wheels.
PS: There is an input for things like an I-Pod in the glove box so I am able to use my XM radio portable.

You are way off car reviwer man.

Pros: This car is hot and if a woman had balls this would be the car. This car is being positioned in a very differnt way than other vehicles, this car is targeted to women, cutting edge to say the least.

Cons: The guy who wrote this review has got a stick up his you know what.

Review: I guarentee the Eos's is going to make a much bigger splash than has been portaryed in this review, not only does it's name emboy great historical reference which intruges comsumers to think, the car is gourgerous and savvy. Something that many cars have been lacking. It is new, fresh, and design speaking, very cool. The goddess eos would be dissapointed in whoever wrote the above review and may turn you into dust.

Pros: The 5 Section Roof lavish interior

Cons: none just wish i could have test drove it

Review: the editor the wrote that review is wrong the Eos has steering mounted controlls and will more than like have Bluetooth connectivity due to the fact that there will be a Nav. availible in this model the interior feel very smooth my sales rep how has driven it says the 2.0FSI engine provides ample pick up and the gas mileage is a plus City 23 Highway 32. This is a much better car than the Volvo C70 being that the cost is much cheaper, the quality is better, volvo has recently aquired many of the ford problem(electrical) like stereos tuning them selfs check engine like comingon even though nothing is wrong with them

Cons: Waiting time for delivery

Pros: I can go topless anytime

Cons: No t available in US until Labor Day

Review: Loved It!Loved It!Loved It!!!! I drove the 2.0 around a test-track and this girl handled like a dream. I can't imagine what the 3.6 will be like in this Greek Goddess. I was told VW has delayed entry until sometime around Labor Day, with an initial launch of about 11,000 units. Prices in US will start around $29K for Eos Value Edition. I drove the 2.0 in Package 2 Sport and Luxury. Sport had a tighter suspension and formed seats to hold you in around the curves. The luxury seats were as soft as a newborns bottom. My lease on My GTI is up in December I don't think I can wait!!!!

Not what we saw.... this thing is awesome

Pros: Compaired to C70 had more trunk space

Cons: Lack of choice with initial shipment

Review: We saw it at the Vancouver Auto Show, we loved it, we put a deposit down!!
Looking for a convertible that is practical in our West Coast weather and with decent trunk space was our goal. Our need is to have a 3 wheel "Pride" scooter in the trunk with the lid down....we tried it and this is the one!! We had the C70 earmarked, but it couldn't fill the bill.
Unfortunately the initial shipment to our area is limited and orders are filled by deposit with right of first refusal. It should be interesting to see the options and color available when it's our turn in the fall of 06.

Cnet review commented uninformed..

Pros: great lines with top up or down..

Cons: hmm..past vw reliability spotty

Review: Ugly? Compared to the Toyo/Lexus, the PT Cruiser, and GM Compacts, this convertible is Miss America. You got to be kidding me, all the cars mentioned above look like putting the top down was an afterthough, which it probably was. Convertibles of late look like someone took an eraser and simply swept away the roofline. B O R I N G. I am not a VW fan, never owned one, probably never will but this car actually looks like it was meant to be be topless. Besides, where can you get a retractable hardtop for under $30K that seats 4 people. Mr. or Ms. Cnet reviewer, you need a remedial lession in auto design. This car may not be a 911 Targa, but it surely is the sharpest top down ride for us mortals to afford that has hit the streets in a long, long time.

great car from VW

Pros: the price might be right...but we won't know yet

Cons: none yet, but wait and see

Review: I saw this car yesterday at the LA Auto Show. We were looking specifically at the Saab 9.3 convertible, the new Volvo C70 and the VW Eos. All three compare very favorably, although the Saab still has a soft top. Both the Volvo and the Saab are in the same price class, probably about $39,000 with choice of usual Basic options and a good buying strategy. But the price on the Eos could be below that. VW Auto show personnel could not predict the price, but said the base price will be just above the Beetle Convertible. If that's the case maybe the Eos will be priced in the mid 30's (final negotiated price). It is built on the Jetta frame and the size is just right for a 6'2" 200 lb man...me.

Also VW Auto Show were cautious about Eos avail. They said Dec 06 in US. It is definitely an 07 model.

An affordable covertable with hard top, glass rear windown, and sunroof...I'm excited.

Pros: Hardtop with glass rear windown and integrated sunroof. 6sp DSG, powerfull engine options, Nav, great sound system, great VW interior quality.

Cons: Storage (goes with the territory in this class), poor reliability (possibly?)

Review: Not sure about the guy who reviewed this car. You've got a fairly entry level, small convertable, it has a powered, hard top, glass rear window, and an integrated sunroof...and he doesn't think that is an exciting feature on a car at this price point??? What's he thinking??? As far as the styling, well, I've seen some pictures other than these and I thought the car looked great. The author also seemed surprised by the advanced features this car has. Volkswagen has been way ahead of other car makers in offering high end mechanicals in their cars respective classes. Take the Jetta for instance. The cars in the Jetta's size (compact) are the Civic, Corolla, Sentra and Mazda3. Lets look at the new 2005 GLS Jetta. You can get a 2.0T (200hp), 6sp DSG Auto or 6 sp manual, 17" wheels w/ 45 series tires, full leather, heated seats, automatic dual zone climate control, killer stereo, DVD Navigation. The 2004 Jetta's you could get all the above except the Nav and the Auto was a 5 speed triptronic (out of the Audi A4, along with the engine 1.8T). None of the Asian competition can match it. When I bought my 2004 GLS it was leauges ahead of the competition. I couldn't get a 5sp Triptronic in any of them. The most powerfull was the Mazda3 at 160hp. VW mechanicals have always been more sophisticated than the rest of the cars in it's class and price range. Why is the reviewer so surprised? Anyways, it looks to me like VW will once again be offering a car with features normally found only on much more expensive German and upscale Japanese brands, at a lower price. Sounds great!!!

YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!!

Pros: quality parts, best of conv. and hard-top worlds, great drivetrains

Cons: none so far - they won't be here for 6 months!

Review: Cnet, I'm a long time reader, and have used you for many years to guide me on the quest for electronics knowledge. You have lost me as a reader with this and the Jetta reviews.
The review of the EOS, which isn't due in the states for 6 months, is seriously flawed. Your reviewer is clearly showing a distain for VW's. One word has been used to describe the EOS: beautiful. Please get your 12 year old review off the soapbox, and get back to what you do well - review technology, not cars.
