"Super Roadster, not in the spirit of the classics (Z3)"4.0 starson by roadsterlover
Pros: Beautiful Beautiful lines; Much improved over the overdone original Z4; Romping power; DC tranny is the best of both worlds (manual/auto); Manual clutch drivers in heavy stop-n-go know what I mean. Amazing cabin tech (excluding iDrive of course!)
Cons: It's lost the spirit of the Z3 M Roadster. It's heavy, big, long, and tall. It's overdone in monument to overdoneness. The M was a classic Euro roadster, simple beautiful lines, gauges, and interior. You have to buy a MINI to get that now.
Summary: I'm conflicted. I'm keeping my M Roadster but lusting over the new Z4. I'm buying it ASAP. My M Roadster will be garaged and saved until the day it to becomes a long lost classic, driven occasionally for the moments I'm feeling nostalgic. Hopefully, I'll sell it for millions on the lawns of Pebble Beach (Ok, one can dream)!
BMW built a beautiful car with the Z4, leaving forever behind the days of the classic european roadster. The technology under the hood and in the cabin makes this car a techno lovers dream. There's more than enough stuff to impress your friends.
The Z3 had the classic roadster lines. The original Z4 was a horribly tortured design. I could never get over the excessively curvaceous trunk lid. The best way to describe flame surfacing is flame broiling, it always comes out overdone.
The new Z4 brings back smoothness and flow to the exterior harking back to the classics. There are still just enough tortured lines to remind you it's the follow-up to the original Z4.
Cabin interior brings a sense of luxury to the roadster, further distancing itself from the classics and heading into the territory occupied by the overdone Jaguars and Benzs. The Z4 is growing up. No longer the domain of the roadster lovers, it's now the car for the wealthy urban professional with an image to keep, a symbol of arrival.
The BMW roadster's path is similar to the Mustang. It started out a small nimble car, but Detroit could only improve it by making it longer, wider, taller and heavier.
If only I could have all of the new Z4 packed into the classic M Roadster, I would be in heaven.
