"Wow! That review was DEAD wrong. Read MotorTrend's review."
Pros: Gas mileage, acceleration, comfort, handling, near-zero emmisions, sound system, Civic resale value
Cons: Smaller trunk
Summary: My '06 civic hybrid has been getting approx. 47 mpg since I got it, six mo. ago. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, that rides in it (or that I've let drive it) is extremely impressed with the acceleration and handling. It produces near zero emmisions, so for those people that tend to think globally, rather than just about themselves, that's a definite advantage. It has an "Auto-Stop" feature so the engine turns off (simply put) when at a stop-light or stuck in traffic, so it uses no fuel and produces no emmissions, and instantly (and quietly) comes on again when releasing the brake pedal.
When I read CNET's review I was shocked. I found the article very misleading in terms of acceleration, "rough ride", and interior noise. I tested 12 other cars (all non-luxury/performance, including Prius), and when comparing mpg, acceleration, handling/feel, and noise, the Civic Hybrid easily won. This car can EASILY merge w/ highway traffic, and pass at-an-instant on a single-lane road. Some of the other qualities include speed-sensitive volume (sound-system) control, 6 air-bags, well-placed hand controls, easily viewed digital speedometer, moveable middle armrest, soothing (not sleep-inducing) and controllable blue display, and tilting/telescoping steering wheel.
Bottom line: I've owned "american" cars and toyotas and hondas (all non-luxury/performance), and this car is, BY FAR, my favorite.

My wife owns a Prius and I bought the Civic Hybrid. We are very satisfied with our purchase. Because my civic has the navigation she uses it when she needs this feature. While our decision to buy hybrid cars were based on the environment and economy (We would like to think in this order) we soon found out that it is a lot of FUN to try and maximize fuel efficiency by changing our driving habits. I no longer lay rubber on the road, I can't even if I wanted to. So there are trade offs, you do have to plan passing other cars at or above 70 MPH, other than this, merging on the freeway is no problem. We Hybrid drivers make it last!

Hybrids are aimed for a specific market. The buyers care about the environment and like high tech features. If you want acceleration you get something else.

No two ways about it. The Civic Hybrid is slow.

I agree. I have just purchased a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid, and on the first tank I was getting 49mpg with a combination of city and highway driving. The car is quiet, quick, manoverable and lots of fun to drive. Oh...and by the way, with petrol hovering around the $6.00 per gallon mark in Australia, I'm very very very happy with the MPG.
