Product summary
The good: With its small and efficient engine, the 2007 Toyota Yaris gets excellent mileage. The car's stereo plays MP3 and WMA CDs, plus it includes an auxiliary input.
The bad: Short on safety-tech standards such as antilock brakes, traction control, and side air bags, the 2007 Toyota Yaris sacrifices a lot to achieve its rock-bottom price. Cabin gadgets are also minimal.
The bottom line: The 2007 Toyota Yaris is suitable for city errands and short commutes but few other applications. Good fuel economy is nice, but poor road conditions can easily upset this little car.

Toyota enters the revitalized U.S. market for small and inexpensive cars with its 2007 Toyota Yaris, a model name that has appeared in Europe since 2000. But the 2007 Yaris, both the U.S. and European version, is a serious upgrade from the previous non-U.S. version. It uses Toyota's new styling, evidenced in its round nose, and has all of Toyota's strong build quality.
But this car is also designed to hit a rock-bottom price. Our test car, a three-door hatchback model (a sedan model is also available), has a base price of $10,950. Unfortunately, gadget fans won't find much to entertain them in a car designed for this low-end segment. Our Yaris had the $1,290 Power Package, which included a decent-sounding audio system with an MP3/WMA single-CD slot and an auxiliary input jack.
The power train is similarly basic in the 2007 Toyota Yaris, with the engine being its technology high point. The 1.5-liter four-cylinder power plant uses Toyota's VVT-I intelligent variable-valve timing and electronic throttle control. The five-speed manual is nothing to write home about; an equally unexciting four-speed automatic is available as well. Active safety equipment, such as traction control and even antilock brakes, is also sacrificed to keep the price in the bargain basement.
Although we focus on tech here at CNET, we found that the 2007 Toyota Yaris's low-tech nature does make it fun to drive, with a bit of hooliganism thrown in. For more normal purposes, it's comfortable enough for a commute and functional enough for errands around town, although it doesn't offer the luxury of navigation. It falls short in many departments for road or weekend trips. In this era of high gas prices, its fuel economy will be a welcome relief.
At this price level, the 2007 Toyota Yaris doesn't offer much in the way of cabin gadgets. However, Toyota has managed to keep the interior from looking cheap. The manually adjustable front seats are comfortable, and the cloth feels soft but tough. Fit and finish on the dashboard seem solid, and the materials have a nice texture. But an inexpensive build means less sound insulation, as we recorded 73 decibels during our sound-level check.

The instrument cluster--what there is of it--is centrally mounted on the dash. This arrangement makes it harder to monitor the speedometer, but this car doesn't go all that fast. The speedometer has a nice electroluminescent look, and a small LCD with a paper-white background sits to the right of it, displaying fuel level and trip information. These are nice touches on a down-market car.
The stereo fills a double-DIN slot at the top of the stack. Interestingly, the spec sheets say that without the Power Package, the Yaris merely comes prepped for a stereo, so expect a gaping hole in the dash. This is also a very aftermarket-friendly dash, with a size suitable for some pretty swanky head units. The stereo included in our test car had a single-CD slot that played MP3 and WMA discs. The controls make it easy to navigate folders and tracks, and the display shows ID3-tag information. An auxiliary jack behind the shifter allows for an MP3 player.

The audio quality in the 2007 Toyota Yaris is not bad, due to the fact that the seating position is high and the four speakers are set near floor level. This arrangement keeps any one seat from being blasted by one speaker, with the sound welling up from below. It's not really immersive, but there's some clarity at average volumes. Higher volumes ruin the quality quickly.
As expected, navigation, Bluetooth, and voice command are not offered on the Yaris. But Toyota has used the space left over by the lack of electronics creatively, putting odd little compartments everywhere. It has a glove box, as well as a compartment above the glove box. There is also a similar-size compartment above and behind the steering wheel, along with one in the lower dash by the driver's left knee. Other little cubbyholes can be found on either side of the stack.

This penchant for storage is also shown in the cargo area of the hatchback Yaris. With the rear seats up, there is space for a few grocery bags. But when these seats are folded flat, the cargo area becomes fairly large--which is good because the seats don't offer much people room. Legroom is cramped in the rear, even with the front seats fairly far forward.
Our test Yaris came with one other interesting touch: a $275 interior-illumination kit. This kit amounts to a couple of blue LEDs mounted in a pan just in front of the stick. While relatively simple, the effect is cool.
With its simple five-speed manual transmission and small size, the 2007 Toyota Yaris will be fun for people who like to thrash cars around. The power train isn't as peppy as the one on the 2007 Honda Fit, but with good rev control, the Yaris can be pushed around in an entertaining manner.
The engine is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder with double overhead cams and Toyota's electronically controlled variable-valve timing, making it the most advanced part of the Yaris. Still, it produces only 106 horsepower and 103 pound-feet of torque at 4,200rpm, which means drivers need to get the engine revs up more than in other cars before attempting to take off from a stop. Hill starts, a specialty of our San Francisco testing grounds, are especially challenging with this engine.

Once moving, this engine propels the 2007 Toyota Yaris along adequately. We found it easy to hit 80mph while merging on to a freeway, and active use of the transmission prevented too much speed loss when attacking freeway hills. The gear ratios in the transmission require some getting used to: First gear should be held longer than in most cars, up to about 15mph, with second gear taking over to about 35mph. Third gear can hold out and even cruise at 55mph. There isn't a lot of overlap in these ratios because of the engine's low torque. Of course, that also means torque steer is nonexistent.
The Yaris's suspension works adequately to damp out and ride over potholes, and it feels steady enough around corners for a car of this class. It uses MacPherson struts in front and a simple torsion beam in back. There is no traction control or other roadholding electronics included or available for the Yaris, so it can't be pushed too hard around corners.
The upside of the small engine in the Yaris is its fuel economy, rated by the EPA at 34mpg in the city and 40mpg on the highway. In our more lead-footed testing, we observed 31mpg in a mix of city and freeway driving. Low emissions give the Yaris a ULEV-2/Bin 5 rating.
Beyond front air bags and side-impact door beams, the 2007 Toyota Yaris doesn't have a lot going for it on the safety-technology front. But these combine with the body construction to give it a reasonable four stars for front collision and rollovers from the NHTSA. For side impacts, it gets only three stars, most likely due to the lack of side air bags.
The Yaris hatchback is pretty bare-bones as far as roadholding technologies. Traction control and antilock brakes are neither included nor optional. The sedan version's top upgrade package does include antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution.
The 2007 Yaris gets Toyota's comprehensive warranty of three years/36,000 miles and a power train warranty of five years/60,000 miles. Corrosion protection is for five years with unlimited mileage.

Not a bad car
Pros: Great gas mileage, built in blue-tooth, good style
Cons: cup-holders awkwardly placed right in front of a/c vent, centered dashboard

Park anywhere, and has the best MPH around!
Pros: I have the 08' model and I love this car, they don't sugar coat what you are buying. The Review Editor enters the car with unreasonable expectations. The Yaris is meant to not break your wallet in both price and fuel efficiency (very good at 40mph).
Cons: It bottoms out on steep hills on highways. If you don't know how to drive stick correctly this can be frustrating, but again, the Yaris is what it is.
BTW this car will fit in almost any parking space in the city, make your friends' jaws drop when you parallel park between a rock and a hard place!!

Best designed vehicle I have ever seen.
Pros: Duel front wheel drive. Toyota moved the speedometer center dash. I was able to install my after market navigation system right behind the steering wheel. Best fuel economy of any car that has automatic, power steering, power brakes as a option.
Cons: Only a two seat version of the Yaris, with the same dash as the Toyota Yaris, would be a improvement, with the 1.0 liter motor to get better gas mileage, would be a improvement over the 1.5 liter motor verson of the Yaris.

Great commute, sporty and fun.
Pros: Quick, responsive, fun, efficient. Dashboard layout helps night driving. Good trunk space, roomy cabin.
Cons: Cup holders block the ac vents; keyless entry would be nice; sunroof would be great.
This is my everyday commute car, ideal for the five mile drive, and the reviewer is dead wrong about not being a good choice for longer rides. I got the 2007 sedan, used, from the Toyota dealership: with only 10k on the odometer, I opted for the full warranty.
It is quick and responsive in traffic, so much that you quickly forget the price. If I take it easy on acceleration, I can get into the mid- to upper-30's for fuel efficiency. The sound system is both too clever and not clever enough, but forgivable in a car this size, and the MP3 port is great. It is roomy enough for large friends, and has safety features to drive to preschool.
This is a good car for an individual or a couple, or a good second car for a family. Why anyone would pay $40,000 for an SUV instead of $11,000 for a fuel efficient and fun ride like this is a mystery. (For that money, you could get three or four of these, just in case family comes to visit. The Toyota Sleeper Sofa? You heard it here first.)

Junk built to a price.
Pros: Air conditioning.
Cons: Blind spots, comfort, unstable.
Driving in poor weather will take years off your life, as your heart will pound well after you have reached your destination. A perfect car for a city free of precipitation and other traffic.
Not a driver's car at all- steering is loose and detached. Instruments are horribly misplaced- checking your speed or your signals may result in a massively disproportional crash with an American guzzler carrying ritalin pumped honor students.
For the price, I'd purchase a second hand Camry or Corolla.

Great car for the money
Pros: Handles well - good acceleration for a 4 cylinder, can park in little spaces, gas mileage extremely roomy, ergonomics good, decent stereo, tiny blind spots
Cons: No automatic door lock feature, strange glare on front windshield from street lights at night
Just filled up for the first time.
Got 35 mpg (combined city and freeway driving) - hard to beat. The strange glare on the front windshield went away after I washed it, so I'm guessing it was due to residue from dealer's coating. So . . . after driving it now for about a week, my initial review stands.

Cons: Can't see the front of the car while driving.

You couldn't ask for a better car for under 16k
Pros: Fuel efficient, cute as hell, comfortable, mp3 jack, a lot more space than you'd expect, and can really GO for such a little car!
Cons: cruise control isn't standard- (but not that much to add) otherwise, I LOVE IT!
"The instrument cluster--what there is of it--is centrally mounted on the dash. This arrangement makes it harder to monitor the speedometer, but this car doesn't go all that fast."
Is the stupidest thing i've ever heard! First of all, I personally find the instrument cluster in the middle to be SO much easier to monitor! because the steering wheel isn't in the way, and you don't have to look DOWN from the road. It's right there in your range of vision.
Secondly, this car can go pretty fast. 90mph- no problem. i almost didn't even realize it- no shaking or anything.
Everywhere i go i get comments on the car. people always think it's a hybrid because it's just so cute and "space-agey" looking. I was at first attracted to it because of it's price and appearence, but now i just love everything about it! it's comfortable, it's back seat is much bigger than you'd think. it drives smooth, corners great. i can plug my ipod right into the jack. i love all the little compartments to hold things.i get 40 mpg on the highway, easy- sometimes more. and toyotas last a long time. I had a camry before this, and it lasted 15 years. So i went back to toyota when buying a new car. & i'm not disappointed! the yaris is perfect!

THE car in Quebec City
Pros: Fuel efficient, easy to park, great small car for tall person, confortable
Cons: Trunk to small
We have a Toyota Echo for 5 years and could not be more satisfied. It had everything we need to go from A to B and more. Great for long trip also (the way we are seated is very confortable). No extra costs for any repair. The Yaris is far more than the Echo.

Cons: rattle somewhere up front, poor speakers, cupholder placement

Great Car for City Drivers!!
Pros: Gas Saver, Small, Cute, many cool storage compartments
Cons: Light, no criuse control or abs
I have driven this car though a number of snow / rain storms since I've owned it and it dealt pretty good for a small light car. Just in the storms you can't speed too much and have to have BOTH hands on the wheel. If you don't put both hands on the wheel your car will seem to be pushed by the wind...yet the rules of the road say to have two hands on at all times anyways.
The gas mileage is awesome, I work in the burbs and commute 20miles each way everyday and the drive is a breeze thanks to the 350miles I average every tank full.
The seats are a little hard at first but after a few weeks they get worn in and are great. The interior is WAY bigger than the outside makes you believe...a 6' tall stocky male friend of mine was able to sit in the backseat comfortably without his head coming close to hitting the roof. I also am 6' tall and drive comfortably in the car daily. There are many neat compartments to hide stuff in, which can be convenient in the city so things are out of view from people walking by. The trunk is small, probably 5 grocery bags max...although the back seats do fold down and that allows for more space for big things.
Although the car has it's cons the pros outweigh them big time in my book! This car is a great buy for it's cheap price, and would be good for a student, recent grad (like myself), city residents, and people who want to have the gas mileage of a hybrid but can't afford one.

Pros: Fuel efficiency, easy to park
Cons: TERRIBLY shaky at high speeds, slides frighteningly in either moderate to high winds/any kind of inclement weather, poor cornering

Cute, fun, eco, and a big thing in a really small package
Pros: Cheap, good looks, fun to drive, aux input, many cupholders, nice gauges, clever compartments everywhere, and overall great design.
Cons: Only the 2 door hatchback is sold in the U.S., slightly odd cupholders, and a whimpy horn.

awesome car - ignore editor review
Pros: minimalist design, great handling, comfortable interior, fuel economy
Cons: wish it had 5 speed automatic or hybrid technology
No trouble keeping up on the highway. I have 1 hour commute each way to work and car is comfortable to ride in. Sound system is fine. Yaris comes with ABS and side and curtain airbags as an option for just $1600 more than base price. With all the options, the car wasn't much more than the base model. Definitely happy with my car and hope to keep it for 5+ years!
Forgot to mention...
Combo city and highway driving, my fuel economy is between 37 and 41 mpg! Saves money at the pump for sure!

Happier than I expected w/ Yaris Sedan
Pros: great gas mpg (of course), smooth drive, handles great on highway, feel solid
Cons: no lighter/ashtray, dash/console durability might be a concern
However, after not having any luck finding the exact color & (admittedly frivolous) options of the versa that I wanted (keyless entry/ignition)...my trigger happy spouse decided to surprise me with the Yaris Sedan by parking it in the driveway before I arrived home from work last week.
I felt obligated to seem happy as I normally did with past "surprises", however, after driving it to work the very next morning, I couldn't be happier.
I'm no techy, but I do love gadgets and yet despite the review I'm in love with this car! Admittedly, I'm not a car buff or know much about cars, which engine is better, and so on, but what I do care about is 1) good gas mileage, 2) safety, and 3) a pleasurable drive. I'm not at all concerned with the car not having onboard navigation or bluetooth.
To be honest, I'm not willing to pay $2,000+ for a flashy navigation system pre-installed. For my purposes I'd rather buy an aftermarket gps unit such as a garmin or tomtom. I don't mind at all the "single" CD/MP3/WMA player...it's more than enough for me.
Besides I can always attach my iPod to the aux jack or simply burn a data CD...my thinking is, once my music starts playing I will most likely be focusing on driving rather than messing around with the iPod so there's really not much need for me to be able to control the iPod with the installed audio unit - as was proven this past week.
Although I don't live in San Francisco, where CNET test drove the Yaris liftback, I do have my fair share of hills and various highway merging on my way to work. In my weeklong experience with the Yaris Sedan, I have yet to be dissappointed with how it handles. I constantly find myself driving between 70-80mph (shh!) without realizing i was going that fast prior to checking the dash for the speed of the car. At 5am I share the road with numerous semi's as well as other speeding vehicles and the car feels solid and holds it's own while I pass slower trucks/cars as well as when they pass me. Perhaps it's not the same with the liftback, but now I know not to trust reviews so quickly.
During my test drive of the Versa, I found that I like driving the Yaris Sedan more, if not equally. My Yaris has the optional All Weather package as well as the Power Package. Besides my car not having the spoilers I don't really see the difference between my Yaris Sedan and the Yaris S Sedan. I do have the 4speed automatic however rather than the 5speed manual. I've had a manual before and although I was hoping to get a manual shift car this time around...I also know myself well enough to know that after the novelty of shifting gears wears off I would be kicking myself for not getting an automatic.
All in all...in my confusion between choosing the either the Versa or the Yaris, I am glad that my spouse new me well enough to know that the Yaris Sedan is a perfect fit for me.
I think it's an excellent choice for someone who's not stuck on getting a car that seems as though it came right out of the t.v. tuned to "Pimp my Ride." My needs are not to be able to win a 2am drag race or supply drivers behind me with a free preview of the latest DVD release on some lcd monitor attached to the back of my headrest...but rather a solid and comfortable drive while i listen the music on my iPod or a burned CD.

yes, fire review editor!
Pros: fuel efficiency, versatile audio formats, stylish
Cons: safety rating low, slooooow acceleration
i opened new membership just to try to rectify the paint thrown on this vehicle's reputation by whomever wrote the review listed on this site.
i have owned my 07 Yaris Sedan for almost 90 days and i love it! its cute and gets phenomenal gas, i spend at most $15 (about 5 gallons) a week and it never gets below 1/2 a tank =D
i can also play all my burned CDs on the factory deck, and never get that stupid "no disc" message =D
the only thing is the acceleration... nothing to brag about, but with a 1.5L
4-cylinder... are you surprised?
so just lets say for its price range its definately one of the best in the market today. compacts and sedans with this kind of fuel-efficiency are either Hybrid and very expensive (not to mention those batteries cost a small fortune to replace) or upwards of $5k in price. the Honda civic now advertises 40mpg also, but the MSRP is like $15k, and though the yaris may lack a few of the safety features of the civic, it boasts a much more friendly 11K MSRP.
besides it feels solid! Toyota has a reputation for long-lasting, quality merchandise. i know my investment will be a wise one until i can settle into the american dream in the years to come =D

I like my new car a lot
Pros: dashboard in the center, gas, a lot of space
Cons: could have a little more power
I like the Dash board in the center, for 2 reasons, design wise, keep everything organize in the center, you have visually more empty room in the front, and 2nd. you actually can see how fast you go, without looking thru the wheel, didn't you noticed that? check
This is a perfect car for someone who is looking for a reliable car!!!! just with what you need, not the extras that the car makers add, that's why they are EXTRAS!!! when I have the $$$$$$ I will go for the Audi, and the Mercededes uhmm.. meanwhile, I will stick with what I can afford.

I Absolutely Love My New Yaris!
Pros: Quiet, Smooth, Fuel Efficient, Roomy
Cons: Touchy Clutch, Nothing Is Automatic
And the Yaris had all of that.
When I test drove it - it was extremely quiet. It is such a smooth ride. I have only filled up once (from the tank the dealership gave to me), and got only 37 MPG. But I have confidence that this next fill-up will be much more.
I recommend this cute little car to anyone.
You sit up high, so you dont feel like such a small car. You can see throughout the whole vehicle (no blind spots). And it is just so darn economical.
I do not have kids, but I've sat in the back seat - and it was comfortable.
All in all, I love it.
This is my first Toyota, and I cant wait to keep it until it has 150,000-200,000 on it and get a new one.

comments on Wayne Cunningham's review
Pros: Economic compact car.
Cons: can't find it at the Toyota dealer yet.
over all Wayne Cunningham did a pretty bad job reviewing this compact car. I think he pretty much missed the point of it being an affordable and simple car that relates to the everyday person. Not everyone is making as much as he is. There should be another person who is fit to review a budget type car. Wayne Cunningham can go back to do his kind of luxury vehicle reviews.

Cons: Engine power could use a little more juice. The better options are open for the sedan but not the hatchback, why!?

Great car! Terrible reviewer!
Pros: Nice design, lot's of leg and head room, solid ride.
Cons: Too few to mention
I traded my Camry because I wanted a smaller quality car, and this is it! I'm six foot four and I have more head and leg room in the Yaris then I had in the Camery. The car handles the highway beautifully and it feels very solid.
I don't understand the reviewer comments at all because this is a very practical and smart car. If you like toys and are willing to pay thousands of dollars for them then find something else. As for the rest of us reality based consumers, this is the best car on the road

I have had it since 4/28 and I have put almost 5K miles on it, I will be going in for my first oil-change, I bought my car from Lodi Toyota, Not only was the purchase really easy, but I fell in love with this car as soon as I saw it. Its very Euro. Maybe tahts why some people don't like it, you have to like Euro Styling. I like the Center Dashboard, now I can have my Dell Axim on the left, its really conveinant for me. Plenty of space for my I-pod, Oreo McFlurrys, Cellphones, Drinks & other nifty things. The Trunk Space is Huge and I got a fully loaded Automatic 4DR Sedan with Everything for $15,080 ... It connects to my IPOD. HOW Fantastic is that? I have no complaints about my car and a 6 year, 100K warrenty.
YAY!
HEY EVERYONE!!!
Big Question out there, iS the Yaris Safe? Lots of PPL in the USA asking that because the Yaris is New. Look @ This, http://www.technadyne.com/reallydead.jpg
That WAS my Brand New yaris I got on 4/28 on 8/28 I was driving home from a client's house when I was coming off a curve @ 60mph (the posted limit) a deer ran out right in-front of me and I swerved to avoid it, my car did a great job HOWEVER, even though the ABS and the Vehicle Control was wokring, I already lost control on Gravel was spinning around in circles. . . I Hit a Tractor Discer , you know one of those BIG BIG BIG metal things with Discs that slice into the ground for Farming, well reguardless, Even though the Trunk was wiped off completely, I was totally safe and walked from the accident, and the entire cabin on the inside was in-tact even though the trunk was well, look http://www.technadyne.com/notrunk.jpg
I thank God I am alive! . . . My Next Yaris Sedan is going to be Nautical Blue Metallic though.
Still don't know if you want a Yaris?
39mpg (even though I got more) ,extremely safe (look at the proof) ULEV2, (Wikipedia that) Connects to any MP3 Player (not the just ipod) all for less then 16K
Can I give this Car a Hug?

Terrable failure of Toyota? or just a bad dud from the factory?
Pros: Good on gas, affordable.
Cons: Cramped, noisy, internal parts prone to breakage
Week One the oil light came on, due to a cross-treaded oil cap, week two my Yaris seemed to like to veer off to the left, an allignment fixed that, then the window on the passenger side got stuck, and, suseqently shattered when the dealer tried to unjam it. Week three the wipers started to collide. Final week, I returned it and got a refund.
Either Toyota is slipping or they just ran the assembly line too fast, either way, I am staying away from this model, and possibly Toyota as the waiting room at my dealer's repair shop was rather full.

Very Poor Review by Cnet
Pros: Safety, Reliability, Price
Cons: Styling, Styling, Styling
ABS and airbags aren't everything, good design goes a long way. I remember a day when ABS and traction control didn't rule our lives and it's quite obvious that Toyota has done their homework because the Yaris scored 5 out of 5 stars in its 2005 Euro NCAP test for offset and head on crashes. It even got 2 stars for pedestrian safety (who cares) and 3 for child protection. So it doesn't have the techno goodies we love to see, it achieves its purposes to be economical and a good drive.
It's a great little car that will get you where you need to go and while I may not like the styling I can almost guarantee that if the kiddies are buying Sigh-on vehicles they will look at this funky little car. The Honda Jazz or Fit as it's called here in the States is more car but it is more expensive.
