ACT GT 2.0 (i.e. 5.0) Sucksby wahart - November 25, 2005
Pros: ACT 2.0 was a great piece of software
Cons: This is not a product you want to purchase
Review:
Several years ago I had my whole company using ACT 2.0 (marketing, sales, customer support, invoicing ect.) I upgraded my home PC to ACT 5.0 and really wish I had not made that mistake. First instruction was to disable my firewall. What moron would write this into a requirement to install software!? I found the tricks not to disable the wirewall after hours of research. The response time is horrible (launch, load a new database, etc.) Today I am getting CRC errors when launching the database and I have uninstalled ACT 5.0 for the last time. I would not consider ACT 6.0 if they gave me $1,000.00.

One gets the feeling that designer of this software was self-taught on how to program without ever having used a PC before.
The layout really eats it. Navigating Act! is very mouse intensive. Having said that, the mouse isn't very useful for anything other than dragging scrollbars around and moving the mouse cursor from field to field.

ACT- The worst Software choice I have madeby chvytrkn - July 5, 2005
Pros: Customizable
Cons: synronization, too many bugs, very hard to deal with,
Review:
I recently upgraded a previous version of ACT to the latest 2005. This was a very big mistake. after my frustrations with 6.0 I had decided to look for a different software. But after discussing this move with some employees they wanted commonality and talking to the folks at ACT I decided to give the new software a try. The new software is very slow and awkward. Our company had been so busy for the first few months after the purchase we didn't have the time to convert to the new software until recently. I called their so called support to ask one question and I needed to send them three hundred bucks before they would even talk to me. Is this customer service? I can not treat my customeres that way. They were kind enough to take my check, but God forbid I actually want to ask a simple question or opinion. What a joke. My company will not be using this product and anyone who asks me will not be as far as I am concerned. I do not need to do business with people like that.

Cons: slow, poor networking and poor synchronizing.
Review:
I have used ACT for many years and Best has made it worst. This is something I never even thought about in years past, it just worked. Now it my biggest headache. If you are one man band, it's OK although integration with other products is iffy at best. But networking a department and sycnchronizing is a giant headache in the best case and impossible in the worst. I bought a 5 User package. Nobody is looking at the same thing. And Best is no help at all. This was money down the toilet. I only hope I can export what I put in it to the next database program I buy.

It's Not What It Used to Beby - June 18, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
For users of ACT! 5/2000, stay with what you have, particulary if you "tweaked" the ACT! registry to add modifications to pointers, adding icons and cataloging saved lookups into dropdowns. If you have done this and plan to upgrade to 6.0, you can expect to lose all of your changes and the ACTREG file won't help you. Prior to upgrading, I spoke with no less than a dozen techs at Best who all swore that my customization of ACT! would be preserved through the upgrade. NOT! It took nearly ten hours to manually restore my previous configurations to 6. Not feeling my pain when I took them to task on it, I found their support to be inept, at times rude and always lacking any real concern for their customer. I've spoken with a great number of folks at Best and for the most part, they all act this way. This would be representative of their corporate culture itself. So .. it's buyer beware unless all you need is a simple contact manager. On another note, Act! 6 does have a built in browser which is great but it won't take you back to previous pages. The ACTDIAG utility works better than its predessor but I seem to be scratching for nice things to say about the application. You can add functionality to ACT! by beefing it up with some of the freeware programs out there on the web. My version of ACT! now performs in-field computations for forcasting purposes, does multiple name lookups, writes notes to entire lookups simultaneously, and can lookup a contact while the database has another contact open. With a little work, it can be what you've wanted it to be. ACT! isn't bad for what it does .. just don't expect too much from it.

What...did you say you really like that caller ID feature and have XP NT or 2000???? Surprise! There's a small "by the way" in the user manual (not on the website or sales literature)that tells you it's not compatible. They also want to charge you extra to make this advertised feature actually work. I hope if you bought this you are within the 30 days because guess what? Our company has used act for several years and moved to 6.0 earlier this year with the intention of enhancing our sales/marketing outreach. We have approximately 20 licenses. Since moving to 6.0, the system will crash or register a fatal error at least once during every session for every user. We have invested more than 40 hours of our own IT time in investigating and working to resolve this error. When we contacted Act! in regards to this product behavior, we were told that we had to purchase tech support ($199/user) before they would address the performance glitches. Unbelievable. I buy product. Product does NOT work. Company says I must buy support to fix a product that never worked. If MS did something similar they'd be sued for fraud. I strongly encourage others to avoid doing business with this company under any circumstances.

We have Email and fax constantly all day.We were told that they integrated with outlook express and winfax pro that we were using as stand alone products. Once we installed it the email integration was awfull with outlook express and we found out that you couldn't send html email if you use outlook express and act together! We then tried the email client that came with act.. the worse most basic email client I have in ten years. Very few email management and very little customization. Since that wasn't an option either we "upgraded" to outlook XP with was supposed to solve all our email problems NOT! Kept on crashing and basically not working. OH and talk about slow! Try to use the "interated" act address book in outlook take 10-15 to access everytime. Email searchs take 2 mins EACH! Stay with ACT 5.0by - March 1, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
Should you make the jump from ACT2000 to ACT6.0? I say, probably not. The benefits are marginal. I would advise most people to stay on ACT 2000, especially if your use of ACT is moderate to light. The only strong reason I?m upgrading is to be able to sync data with the new ACT for Palm (which I think is a good product). Here?s Interract?s top reasons to upgrade (along with my comments in parentheses): Completely new ACT! e-mail (I actually like the old ACT2000 email better. Since I use Outlook Express, my email features are limited. If you use Outlook, your results may be better. They say you can add HTML objects to your emails to make them look slicker.) Improved Mail Merge Wizard (A slight improvement for sending fax/printed/email merges). Enhanced Outlook integration (No benefit for me. I use Outlook Express.) New Active Libraries (Don?t doubt that I?ll ever use them. Must be for real power-users) New Contact Activity Lookups (I?ll use this feature about once every 3 months. Not that big a deal) New Calendar Pop-Ups & Totals (A cute little item, not a big deal) Advanced Alarms (Not useful to me, because I don?t use SideAct) Improved Internet Services (Not a good improvement. They have an ACT window that simulates Internet Explorer, and not 100%. I prefer ACT2000 which, when you click on a Contact?s website, it opens up your default browser. Why re-invent the wheel?) Internet Directory Services (They removed this from ACT2000, so its good to have it back, but that seems like an underhanded incentive to get people to upgrade. I do use this MapQuest link to plot driving directions from my house to the Contact?s location. You can still do this in ACT2000, but it takes some more clicks and some cutting/pasting. ) New Annual Event Tracking (I have a few dozen contacts that use this feature, but its not a big help for me.) Links to Accounting programs. (I don?t use any accounting programs). New Contact Layouts (2 to be exact, neither is that impressive). Easy installation and instant data conversion (True, it was very easy.) It?s guaranteed! (True, they do offer money back if you?re not satisfied.)

I've spent a sick amount of time just trying to find out HOW to change the layout and use other alleged features. The Help Software is without question the poorest I have used to date. My only option is to pay these people to get the to tell me how it works, since help doesn't. Well that's a great scam, isn't it? One reason I bought this software was because the other CM's were supposed to be very complicated. Help Software that does not work makes ACT! 6.0 not just complicated, but impossible. I moved back to 5.0 after a few weeks of hassles with 6.0 (mostly e-mail hang ups). After several weeks, ACT! still hasn't responded to me about a refund. Here are my disappointments (in general) with this product: 1. It still does not properly support PDA sync (ACT! tech support tells me I will get corrupt data if I use Link if I'm also using user-to-user data sync). 2. In general, user to user sync is weak. No support for sync of e-mail, documents, reports, layouts, etc. Most problematic, it is not possible to designate which info. gets synced to individual users. 3. E-mail history taking is irksome. Even with the new version, you still have to manually look up the contact for each e-mail you want to save in the history (even if that contact with correct e-mail is already in the database). There are no e-mail filters. I'm probably going to take another look at Goldmine. Alas, if only someone had taken up development of ECCO Pro (added an email client and beefed up sync a bit). I have gained very little moving from ECCO to ACT!, and I have lost a lot (I'm still using ECCO as a general information manager, since ACT! is strictly contact-based it makes management of projects, even categorized to-dos, and other info. hard or impossible).

Specifically, I dislike this upgrade for reasons that have already been highlighted by others. I have been using Act for more than 10 years and was eagerly awaiting ACT 6.0. After the last upgrade to ACT 2000 it was a toss-up, e-mail integration that had worked well with the earlier version no longer worked in a manner that was useful. Now ACT 6.0, Outlook integration has improved but still leaves a lot to be desired. Messages in sub-directories in Outlook cannot be linked. Messages that are moved from one folder in Outlook to another are no longer linked in ACT. Internet Links do not work. The browser window crashes and/or loses it's connection. The browser window disappears when trying to resize it. Drag and drop of appointments in the calendar doesn't work. And, there's more. Finally, after 1 hour and 58 minutes (1 hour and 48 minutes hold time). The best tech support could tell me is to uninstall ACT and re-install it. All-in-all it looks like I bought the early production, maybe later builds will be better. AND... I'm finding features in the last version that were not used often but were very useful are gone. Looks like they take features away on the even numbered versions and you buy them back on the odd versions.

I am shocked at how poor the Act 6.0 release is. I had been using Act 5.0 for about a year and a half, and had not been thrilled with how it worked. In a database of a few thousand records, email address look-ups took 5-10 second each (and had to be done just to reply to incoming messages). Email merges were extremely slow (about 1-2 seconds per email sent) and sometimes delivered only fragments of the original message. Basically, I found Act 5.0 to totally lacking the BASICS you'd want from contact management software. So, I was quick to purchase 6.0 assuming these basic problems would have been addressed. But not only were they not addressed, many were made worse. As far as I can tell the main difference with 6.0 is a snazzier GUI. Email lookups are even SLOWER than before, and the kicker: after 3 weeks of usage, my sales guy just discovered that the Outlook integration is totally broken. Depending on your Outlook configuration, emails you think have been sent may have JUST DISAPPEARED. We found this out only after calling $200/year tech support (ie, no pro-active notification). You can imagine that this has not been a good thing for sales of our new product. Avoid this product.

If you use Outlook and are maniacal about tracking sales prospects, this might be a worthwhile upgrade. But for everyone else, it's a waste of your money. There's no Eudora interface (as limited as was) and several of the online features were removed. The "annual event" feature is bogus as is the document library (hey Interact, take a look at Goldmine -- they've had a good document library feature for years). And there's the incompatability between ver. 5 and 6 file format (anyone remember the screw-up Microsoft did when they changed the Word formats a few years ago? Well, Interact obviously didn't learn anything from that.) The e-mail client is great if you really love getting spam and are willing to give up filters, rules and other ways to manage your e-mail. Fortunately, there's a way to downgrade back to ACT 5.

Crashed my system repetitively due to a conflict with HotSync (I use a HandSpring Visor). Claims to support PDA's but want to charge you for any assistance. Apparently ACT! feels that since it doesn't work with the PDA it must be the PDA's fault and not theirs.

Stay with 5.0by - September 6, 2002

Review:
I purchased 6.0 after attending one of their product debut presentation. The main reason I decided to upgrade is the new enhanced email function: HTML. I figured with this new function I can send nice email broadcast to our customers. Other than the email enhancement, everything else is pretty much the same. However, they fail to mention during the presentation that 5.0 and 6.0 users CANNOT SHARE DATABASE. Since there is no need to upgrade all 10 computers in our office just for the e-mail feature, I ended up uninstalling the 6.0, returned it, and reinstalled 5.0.

No longer has online "profile tab" online Map!by - September 6, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
They removed the online mapping feature, so you must now manually go to a different website (like the maps over on yahoo) and then type in the address in order to see where the customer is. That funtion for us (in the service business) used to be wonderfully convenient, but now no longer.

Glitchy, Enhanced, Buggy, Easier...by - August 27, 2002

Yes, rather schitzophrenic - to say the least. Not so many "new" features as there are enhanced ones over Act 5. Nice enhancements, but with them come bugs and glitches that Act still needs to work out. Calendar is terrible, always has been, but Act is determined to keep it there (for some unknown reason.) They have "enhanced" it by adding "rollover" information pop-ups. But, more of a "nice to have" than anythign else. Would have gladly given up the roll-overs for a better calendar/group scheduler. Calendar isn't for the small office who wants to communicate with each other's calendars. And, you won't find much support from Act, on anytyhing. Recommendation: Wait until Act 6.1. If you need something along the lines of calendaring, look elsewhere.
