QuickClean 2.0 lives up to its name. This $29.99 package quickly cleans out unwanted programs, empties Internet caches, dumps space-clogging cookies and ActiveX Controls, and trashes old e-mail. Better yet, unlike its competitors, it can overwrite, or "shred," unwanted files, thereby preventing nosy types from accessing deleted files. (When you delete a file, the data remains on your hard drive until it's overwritten with new data.) While we were less than thrilled with McAfee's tech support, we found QuickClean 2.0 to be a speedy and reliable performer for fast cleanup jobs, comparable with Norton CleanSweep 2002.

Easy installation
QuickClean 2.0 steps you through a quick and painless setup that takes only a few minutes. The optional Instant Updater feature checks the McAfee site for QuickClean updates during setup, but you'll need to register with McAfee, that is, provide your e-mail address, to use it.

Clean interface
The orderly interface of this uninstaller is uncomplicated and simple to use. The opening screen features browserlike Back, Home, and Next buttons, making it a breeze to navigate among the app's numerous disk-cleaning tools. A handy pie chart shows the amount of free vs. used space on your hard drive so that you can visualize the drive's storage capacity.

This cleanup app's ability to completely shred files is unmatched. It overwrites deleted files, thereby preventing snoops from recovering sensitive erased data from your hard drive. QuickClean steps you through the shredding process, making it a snap to use. You can shred files, folders, unused disk space (which may contain deleted data), or an entire disk.

Speedy performer
QuickClean offers several ways to clear out disk clutter. The fastest is aptly named QuickClean Lite, a speedy utility that clears out Internet caches, temporary file folders, and the like. In CNET tests, QuickClean Lite tagged 8.5MB (171 files and 17 Registry entries) for deletion, roughly similar to the performance of Norton's Fast & Safe tool, which tagged 7.8MB on the same test PC.

This program has an Explorer-like tool for reviewing tagged files and selecting (via check boxes) the ones you wish to keep. The feature is critical because, like Norton CleanSweep, QuickClean is often overzealous in its disk-sweeping efforts. Its SpaceMaker tool, for instance, tagged 634MB of "unneeded" files on our 4GB hard drive. Many of these files were valuable music, image, and video files. But fear not. You can reconfigure SpaceMaker's settings to ignore popular file types, including WAV, JPEG, GIF, and AVI.

So-so support
We were less thrilled with McAfee's online support. Although it was easy to find a support representative using McAfee's Web chat utility--wait times were typically less than two minutes--the reps showed a surprisingly lack of knowledge about QuickClean 2.0. One told us the program doesn't uninstall Windows programs (it does). Another suggested that we reinstall QuickClean in Windows Safe Mode to fix a nagging crash, even though our PC couldn't read the CD-ROM drive in Safe Mode and therefore couldn't install the program. And when we asked to escalate our problem (that is, talk with a product engineer), we were given two nonfunctioning e-mail addresses to contact. Surely, McAfee can do a better job of supporting its customers.

Despite these support shortcomings, however, McAfee QuickClean 2.0 is a well-designed disk sweeper that makes it fast and easy to clean up your machine.

QuickClean's SpaceMaker tool lets you select which files you want to delete so that you can save important multimedia files, for example.

A Bloated Bag of Air

Pros: Kills time for couch potatos

Cons: Blated, Useless, boring

Review: Why McAfee and Symantec continue to write bloated code that end users are rejecting is surprising to me. I guess they get paid by the line This software does nothing but waste your time downloading - Just witness the time it takes to install and check for updates.
You would better spend your time picking your nose - At least you might get 'something' for your effort. pass on this and don't burden your registry with corporate software dribble. Too bad we can not choose a rating of "0" as this chicken pen deposit deserves

Dangerous and disastrous

Pros: None, harmed my system

Cons: wipes out your Sent E-mail folder and Restore Points

Review: As part of a Comcast McAfee upgrade of Virus/Firewall proctection this program was installed as a bundle. It wiped out my Sent Email folder where I archive messages sent to clients, track info. But, not only that, it then wipes out your System Restore points. so you cannot go back. It cannot be disabled, you cannot run Virus or Firewall separately. The ONLY way to stop it is to remove any and all McAfee programs. Even their own tech suport people don't know that QuickClean wipes these "dangerous and threatening" files out although it is listed among QuickClean's benefits. No wonder this is not available at any online merchants, they must have pulled it and sold it all to Comcast.

Absolute computer killer!

Pros: There are some easy tools on here.

Cons: This program will eat up your computer, and spit it right back at you!

Review: Well, I used it, I crashed my whole system.
Do not use the duplicate file remover!
I did, and it took 3 days in the shop to fix my system!

It has been crashing on disk cleanup

Pros: I can't find anything good about it. The previous versions were good.

Cons: I can't say anything good, really. Sorry

Review: Piece of junk with glitches and bugs. How can the editor give it an 8? No way, Jose.
Updated
There is no support anywhere from McAfee.

Simple diasaster

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Too simple to remove too much - without anyway of getting back or warnings. Nice to see that McAfee thinks that it is poor software - as good software has uninstall programs. QuickClean doesn't. Regret having touced it.

Danger! Danger, Will Robinson!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Advanced features totally unfriendly, and take forever. GUI is tiny and unhelpful. Cleaner cleans login info whether you want it cleaned or not. Program uninstaller finds about 10% of the available programs without manual assistance. McAfee has taken another good product and ruined it. This dog won't hunt.

Disaster

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Loaded it on 3 systems Win98SE, ME, XP. XP was the worst. The only font that was available was Marlett, which took me a while to figure out since it's unreadable. I tried many options to restore the FONTS folder in Windows, all unsuccessful. I had to reinstall XP - lost My Documents. On Win98SE I only lost most of the fonts. Still the FONT folder was nonfunctional. Couldn't install any new fonts. Tried everything I came across searching the web for answers. Nothing worked. Didn't want to reinstall 98 because it was a laptop that came with bundled software, which stated that if I did a reinstall I would wipe out all of the software and files that did not come on the original machine. Upgraded to ME (Ugh!) The Windows ME machine seemed to survive QuickClean. I only bought this product because I couldn't find my old copy of Uninstaller and the store I went to didn't have any other Clean utilities in stock.

Instant Updates Very Unreliable

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I should have been updated to quick clean 3.0 by now. But I have been ignored. I bought my Quick Clean so recently, that i should have recieved the update when it arrived. Please send me my 3.o update. Thank you.

Deceptive Advertising.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: McAfee fails to notify the consumer THAT QUICKCLEAN IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH NETSCAPE. After contacting customer service about Quickclean's functionality with Netscape, the technology support representative instructed me to uninstall Netscape and use Internet Explorer.

Shredder

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Okay, the CNET review says, "you can shred files, folders, unused disk space...., or an entire disk". I'd sure like to know the trick to the last two operations because both 'erase free space' and 'erase an entire disk' are greyed out and don't work. I can't locate anything that would enable them.

Piece of CRAP

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Crashed continually in Win2000pro, McAfee "tech chat" (what a concept!?) said use patch # xxxx, which wasn't even available on their download site. $2.95 a minute for support??? Go to blazes McAfee!!! This piece of trash is going back to Best Buy tomorrow. And when McAfee winds up in chapter 11, I don't want to hear about "fickle markets." Products and companies like this one deserve to fail - and surely they will. QuickClean is a four-star example of inexcusably bad software engineering.

Buggy with worthless Tech Support

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Half the features simply lock up XP. Phone Tech Support told me to reinstall it - which did nothing. E-mail tech support never got back to me (been wiating three weeks). All in all, it's slick looking junk.

User Rating: 2/10

Avoid it!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This has caused me nothing but problems since I downloaded it. Quick Clean Lite kept crashing. Then it deleted non-critical files withou which my computer would not work. Fonts became unreadable, so I couldn't access on-line help. I backed up my computer, which actually also crashed. I restored my hard drive, losing a lot of files in the process, and decided to try again. On-line support was non-existent. Telephone help is way too expensive. I reinstalled Quick Clean and the same problems happened again. I'm about to uninstall the whole thing. A total waste of money and time.

Locked up in XP, Norton much better

Pros:

Cons:

Review: No online help; waited 15 minutes still no response... This did work at one time, but now it decided not to work...downloaded upgrade patch; no help! Stick with NORTON Clean Sweep !

Not what advertised

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I downloaded the program from Amazon. Unlike others, most of the functions appear to work, except the "Installation Monitor and Backtrack" function doesn't even appear on my program. Tried install/reinstall as suggested per tech support, still nothing. Tech support suggested downloading a patch which I already had installed. This is disappointing, like buying a car with no A/C.

Doen't Work

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Will not work even after intalling patches - "Technical help" a joke. A waste of money and effort - do not buy this.

This Merry Maid Cleans away the trash

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Two ways to Uninstall an App. Have QuickClean run the apps native uninstaller, then it will go behind and clean out the rest of the junk (a good idea now that newer programs include much better uninstall routines). Or let QC do the job.

User Rating: 3/10

WAY OVER RATED!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Has some good featurs,But not so effective.I still can`t get all of its programs off of my system.

User Rating: 10/10

Very useful. Easy to use. Recommended.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Using with 98SE, not a single problem. Simple interface, easy to use. Quick and painless install and setup. Lets you see what you're deleting BEFORE you get rid of it. Love the installation monitor, tracks all aspects of a new download or install, allowing you to "backtrack" it later for a clean uninstall. Great utility, highly recommended.

DOA! Still Not working after upgrade!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Wouldn't work when I got it and after an hour on McAfee Chat support, 2 registry hacks, 2 patches and 1 upgrade it still doesn't work. Apparently McAfee has joined Intuit and Symantec in releasing extremely buggy software and then wanting us to pay per minute for them to help us help them to dicover the bugs. Let us all send them emails telling them that we will no longer buy their products until they provide at least 30 days free support and only release reasonably stable products. Thank you Kris

no confidence in Quick Clean

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I used Quick Clean on a WinXP machine and it deleted a registry key required for the System Restore operation. When I contacted McAfee email support asking if there was a way to reverse registry changes (I later found out there was), I was told there wasn't and advised to just reinstall the program--I don't see what that would have done to help me... Then I was able to get on their support chat and was told to download a 'patch' for the version I had. It appeared to me that the 'patch' was just an update to the version I was currently running, but the support agent insisted it was a patch. When I went to install it, low and behold it wouldn't install because it actually was an update. Bottom line--I had no confidence in the effectiveness of Quick Clean and customer support was a joke. I've since uninstalled this garbage.

Great software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have had no need for tech support after having this product in use fornearly a year. Have had problems with other McAfee software in even getting an answer fm tech spt

User Rating: 9/10

Easy does it!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: QuickClean is easy to use, even for the novice. Have tried it as a "follow up" after using Windows uninstall utility & saw the left-over files QuickClean promptly deleted.

McAfee Should Stick to AV software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: McAfee (NAI)over the past several years has bought out a number of inferior products and tried to market them... This is one of the WORST!

User Rating: 7/10

It does a great job cleaning registry files

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I use Quick clean at least once every month, reclaiming up 30-40 megs on my hard drive.

User Rating: 10/10

Best of the rest

Pros:

Cons:

Review: McAfee QuickClean 2.0 is the best uninstaller utilities that I have tried. It's more stable and less risky in terms of deleting important files. The best of all it is easy to use.

User Rating: 1/10

BIG waste of money!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The Quick Clean Lite option didn't clean the cookies or the registry as it was supposed to. The shredder locked up on XP. I downloaded an update for it hoping it would fix the glitches - but after the update, Qucikclean refused to work at all! All in all, a true piece of trash.

User Rating: 4/10

Not so quick, not so clean sometimes

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Worked wonders on my w98se laptop. Couldn't even boot up except in selective startup. But then put on new IBM netvista XP for app remnant cleanup. When downloaded update, my PC was unuseable and had to format hard drive. COrrupted C:(windows(system32(drivers(pci.??? and another file. Waited a long time to chat online. THumbs down on this one.

QuickClean is not clean

Pros:

Cons:

Review: UI is very confusing. You don't know how to use it if you are an experienced user because their UI does abnormal thing. Most of functions do not work completely. Cleaning only clean half. Something it gives false information. Since I am an advanced user, I know what's going on under the hood. I have not seen such a poor product. Is it tested before released? At first I was excited about its feature when I installed and used for a week. I have to uninstall it and clean it manually.

User Rating: 4/10

QuickClean = Nonclean

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I deleted a com dll and ran QuickClean. It cleaned ProgId and TypeLib but at least not class id or interface id. Note I used so-called advanced function. Needless to say other QuickClean Lite function. The UI is very confusing. At least I seldom see such ugly and unhandy UI. QuickClean should be clean first. I don't care the speed and I do care if it's clean or not. I think either the developers don't know COM or they thought people are satified with some clean. They should really learn how to clean registry for COM related garbage. It's not so difficult.
