Photoshop Album

Entered CNET Catalog: 01/08/2003

Manufacturer: Adobe Systems

Manufacturer description

Adobe Photoshop Album, state-of-the-art software for Windows-based computers - for the first time extends the legendary Photoshop brand to the consumer market. With digital camera sales exploding, consumers - freed from the expense and limitations of film - have made digital picture-taking an integral part of every family occasion and event. Photoshop Album solves the biggest problem facing these digital camera owners: how to easily find, fix, share and preserve thousands of photos accumulating on their computers. Photoshop Album leaves the competition behind by using an easy and sophisticated "tagging" system to organize and find images, and leverages Photoshop software's unrivalled image enhancement technology to provide simple, high-quality one-click editing. In addition, Photoshop Album is the only consumer digital photography product to take advantage of the ubiquity of Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF), creating an intuitive way to share digital photos with family and friends. Adobe Photoshop Album gathers thousands of digital photos for viewing in one convenient place - the photo well - and automatically organizes them by date. From there, it's simple to find a particular photo: a timeline view displays photos taken over a period of time, while a detailed calendar view shows the exact day and month when each moment was captured. Users can bring precise control over finding and working with specific collections of photographs through Photoshop Album software's powerful tagging system. Visual tags can be created to instantly find photos of favorite people, places, events, or any other subject, no matter how large the collection becomes. Photos don't always turn out exactly as planned, so Photoshop Album provides one-click editing tools to fix common problems, such as red-eye, color, contrast and brightness. For more advanced editing, Photoshop Album provides single-click integration for users of Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0, Adobe's award-winning image-editing software for photo hobbyists and amateur photographers. And perhaps most importantly, Photoshop Album is equipped with one-click photo backup to CD and DVD to ensure that memories will be preserved for future generations. Photoshop Album software helps users tell and share the stories of their lives in pictures through entertaining slide shows that can include captions, video clips, and background music. These template-based slide shows are packaged in Adobe PDF, so that Photoshop Album users can deliver their images to anyone who is using free Adobe Acrobat Reader software. With over half a billion copies of this software already distributed across multiple platforms, Photoshop Album eliminates the guesswork of which format should be used to save and share photos - and whether recipients will be able to view them. Adobe Photoshop Album offers prints and other professional photo services through direct links to online service providers, and an easy-to-follow wizard helps users create cards, calendars, albums, Web photo pages, and even 3D Web galleries with just a few clicks of the mouse. Online services may vary worldwide. Adobe has integrated Intel processor optimizations in Photoshop Album, enabling consumers to see improved performance when running the software on Intel processor-based computers.

CNET editors' review

Last year's Photoshop Album debut was less than thrilling. While the software skillfully sorted images, performance problems bogged it down. But for version 2.0, Adobe cleared out the junk to deliver a much better program for organizing and sharing digital photos and video clips.

Just as before, Photoshop Album automatically nabs all the shots on your hard drive and organizes them chronologically. It can also create and track proxy thumbnails of pictures stored on removable media, such as CDs. You can browse your library by clicking a month in the Timeline or sifting through the revamped Calendar. Album also records your management actions and lets you search by events in your photos' history. For example, to call up everything you've sent to a Web photofinisher, you simply select Find > By History > Items Ordered Online.

To help you track down photos, Album remembers how you use them. Check out all the options in the Find menu.

For more precise sorting, Adobe's tagging system lets you enter detailed information about your shots. For example, let's say you've just uploaded a bunch of pictures from your son Charlie's birthday party. To make them all easily identifiable, you can create the new keywords Charlie and birthday, then drag them onto the whole batch. New to version 2.0 is the ability to e-mail tags along with photos, so your friends and family can benefit from all your hard organizational work.

All of the first version's basic editing tools remain in Album 2.0. Newbies who aren't sure how to correct bad pictures can quickly clean them up with one-click fixes for lighting, color, and focus. But if you want to make more-complicated edits, you're out of luck. Album 2.0 is an organizer--not an editor. On the plus side, Adobe does allow you to export a photo to the image editor of your choice and import it back in a flash, so you can make your tweaks without mucking up your organization.

Once you've cleaned up your shots, you have plenty of ways to share them. With the Creations Wizard, just a few clicks can produce a video CD, a greeting card, an e-card, a calendar, or a Web-friendly gallery. Mobile phones, Palm OS handhelds, and compatible TiVo digital video recorders can now accept your Album pictures. Adobe also added more templates and bumped up the maximum resolution for video CDs. And should your computer crash, Album's built-in backup function will safeguard you from losing everything.

While the improvements aren't mind-blowing, they're incredibly thoughtful and well executed. With its more streamlined interface, Album is now a tight ship. For digital-photo enthusiasts, Album 2.0 is a welcome productivity boon: a tool that both organizes images and maximizes the options for enjoying them.

A pretty neat Photo Organizer.

Pros: Well-organized , handy user interface.

Cons: In the newer version it compromises on clarity for the sake of added functionality.

Review: Among itīs most salient features(also present in the former edition)a practical and easy to use collection display. With it a quick-share over the internet capability, the which I find more expeditive that HPīs
EasyShare. However, this last one has various functionality options I couldnīt find in Adobeīs starter Edition. But, then again, the complete professional edition is probably much more complete than this trial version. I also admmire the sobber design of the appearance, for me, appearance is paramount when it comes to working with photography. After all, you have to live with it all the time youīre performing whatever the task is wether itīs processing digital photos, adding special effects or just putting together your family album,

Great for Organizing Large Amounts of Pictures

Pros: Intuitive and Flexible Interface Many different ways to categorize and search for photos Great incremental back-up feature

Cons: Can't search by collection and tags simultaneously. Does not support .wma or .wmv formats Can't re-use a name in a tag if it is used by a different tag in a different catagory. Example, if you used "Hawaii" under places, you can't use it to describe an

Great, if it's what you really want.

Cons: The big con is the price. A relatively simple program shouldn't have a $50 price tag. You're also going to be stuck with Adobe's system of tags, which is annoying, but I decided the benefit of keeping my photos organized by the people in them, the place t

Pros: I really love Photoshop, so I was hoping this product would be wonderful. I think the tag idea is great and could benefit web designers, graphic artists, and image companies even. Yet the program lacks the ability to export the tags and categories from

Cons: I have high hopes for the future of this program. I agree with others that this program needs lots of revisions. For instance, who wants to spend an hour catalogueing images with tags when the tags aren't embedded into the picture. Also, if people alre

Wait for next release - quality sucks!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this program because I liked the archiving functions. And after installing, I was still impressed. BUT - after a few minutes(!) of use, the program crashed my Win2K Pro PC w/256 Mb RAM. After fiddling a lot with registry and everything, i got it up and running again. But since then it keeps crashing. Also tried reinstall, and have applied available patches. I am stunned that a product for the mass market from an otherwise reliable software manufacturer can suffer such hard quality problems. My advice: Good program, but dont buy until the next major release is out and hopefully fixes the numerous problems.

Hazardous to Your System

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been fighting with this program for 5 days now. Difficult or impossible to figure out the foolish interface. It crashes nearly every time I use it. And today I realized it had destroyed the registry on a Windows 2000 installation that was less than a week old, so I just finished reformatting and reinstalling my whole system. Even if the program did actually work, it's more of an entry-level, PhotoDeluxe type of program that should only be given away free with a scanner or digital camera. Charging $50 for this piece of garbage that can take down your entire system should be a crime. Yes, there is a patch, but it's even buggier than the program itself.

Great features; watch the crashes

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I like this product better than Picasa and Jasc. It was easy to produce a web show and a slide show once I had created the comments for each photo. I had to jiggle the dates cause it got confused on date of origin for scans. A digicam solves that. I tried to make a CD and APA has the distinction of being the first app in 18 months to totally crash my XP. Bottom line, I'm buying this app cause I have two key uses, and both performed extremely well in the first hour of use (web show, and slide show).

Love this product

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I read a lot of comments on this product - both positive and negative - before buying it. I ultimately decided that the range of features offered by Photoshop Album - multiple-CD backup, photo organization/tagging, slideshows, single-click edits and auto-resizing for email - plus the excellent interface and Adobe's reputation were worth the risk that those who don't like the product are right. Turns out they're not. I love the interface, the tagging/organization is easy, fast and simply fabulous. I'm running the product on a WinXP platform with 256MB of RAM and have had no performance problems whatsoever. This is a great product and I highly recommend it.

Best I've Tried

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have tried Picasa and Jasc Photo albums. I have found Photoshop album to be great and easy to use. Picasa was a little more difficult to use and also didn't give a sufficient way to organize pictures. The tags in Photoshop album are great by comparison. Jasc's Paint Shop Photo Album had a good ability to organize, but the interface was extremely lacking. Bottom Line, Adobe is probably the best, but it is just a start. It needs a few more features and options. There were very few preferences that could be set. It should be able to edit files directly and not always have to save the files as filename_edited.jpg. I found this to be an annoyance. Every time you edit a photo through this program, you have to have 2 copies of the file. This is not good. Also nesting tags would be a great idea.

Video CD is not good

Review: Photos on Video CD are small with large black frame and quality is very low (too big compress)Program is horrible for organization photos. Stability is very poor.

Wait for the next version, or maybe SEVERAL versions from now

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Routinely lost photos in transfer from camera to pc, database locks and corrupts daily, EXIF import problems

Drawback with low RAM free space

Pros:

Cons:

Review: As long as original photos are left on hard drive there is no problem with accessing photos. Once photos are transferred to CD then when accessing photos from CD the system keeps telling me "Your system is low on disk space...." (have 384 RAM memory space); can only browse but can't re-edit or use photos from CD unless I transfer all photos back to hard drive. Don't like new filename allocated to photos on CD and photos were sorted differently necessitating me to do a laborious searching with new file name; have to search and identify (and re-tag) them individually to PhotoShop album once again if I need to use photos from CD (not recommended!) that were transferred back to the hard drive. That takes fun away. As long as photos are left on hard drive, organizing and cataloging are fine and re-editing not a problem. If a photo file is moved, re-naming a new file pathway for a new location is tough chore to do of going through a number of steps when trying to reconnect the photos. For me quite time consuming. Had to use another software program to caption on the picture or create special effects on the photos. For me a tedious chore. Why not on the same program for ease of use?

Excellent when it works

Pros:

Cons:

Review: At first I really enjoyed it: it was easy, and fun. Then I had trouble opening it. I couldn't get photos from a CD. My pc kept crashing. Adobe emailed me a 9-page troubleshooting guide, but I don't feel confident enough to attempt some of their suggestions. My initial enthusiasm has turned to disappointment, and I think I'm going to uninstall it and regard it as an expensive mistake.

Problems with PDF.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: None of my friends have been able to both view, and hear e-mailed e-cards on PDF. Even those who are using XP Pro and have downloaded the special pluggin for sound. This is "not" acceptable. Unfortunately I've already puchased Photo Album, but I repeat, I'm very disappointed. Do yourself a fever, and wait for something better (You deserve more,we all do). Bear in mind that for me sharing fun small videos is more of a priority right now. If al you want to do is organize photos, Photo Album is very good.

A good overall product

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Adobe Photoshop Album is a good package that accomplishes many of the photo organization tasks easily. 1. You can have multiple albums. Strangely these are not called album, but Catalog (what was Adobe thinking?). Use File->Catalog and you can create a new album. 2. Excellent integration with Photoshop Elements (or Photoshop if ypu have it). 3. Backs up your catalog on hard drive or CDs, and spans over multiple CDs if required. 4. Tagging existing photos is a chore (I have only about 900 photos, but I can imagine what will happen to those having more photos). But once tagged, 5. Creates nice slideshows and pdf documents. Printing is okay but could be better. 6. Reads IPIX details from the digital camera photos. 7. I have had no stability problems All in all its a good software, though expensive. I have yet to try Picasa or Jasc about which I have heard good things.

missing folder options

Pros:

Cons:

Review: You're are forced to use the pre-made top-level catagories which terminates creative usage of this rather nifty app. Way to restricted in storage design. Obviously targetted to the home-user [not running winXP that prog. will do the job if you know how to create a new folder...]

Great for organizing & cataloging

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got this program about 2 weeks ago as a download from Adobe's website. I'm running Windows ME on a Pentium III 866 MHz PC with 256 Mb of RAM. Installation was easy, and there is a search feature which can automatically find and catalog all pictures on your system. Since my files were already organizied in a directory structure, I then then found it easier to do a file import on only the pictures I wanted. In 2 weeks, I've cataloged over 4000 images, and have found it very easy to use. Concerning the negative comment on have only 1 large album: you can make several catalogs, for different purposes, and store thumbnails from CD's or DVD's. I use the tags to also categorize images, and you can then create slideshows of the selected images, or copy them to another target. Although I would like to see more ability to customize and nest tags in future releases, I have not found this to be a limitation.

DOESN'T support video files on CD

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Despite what the box says, PSA will not allow you to catalog a CD containing an MPG file. It insists on copying the file to the hard drive first. That would be ok if you only had a few small video clips. But for those of us with many, many hours of video, it isn't practical. So much for the "no matter where they're stored" promise on the box. Adobe needs to make it work as advertised.

User Rating: 6/10

Good for a 1.0 release

Pros:

Cons:

Review: PSA does a very good job organizing images, as long as you can live within the 4 base categories. I haven't had a crash yet. Network support could be much better, but you CAN use PSA with network drives as long as you are careful about which mwthod you use to get images into PSA. Printing is not very flexible, which is a big drawback for me. Where PSA succeeds is in providing a single stable interface that allows novices, like my wife, to import images via digicam and scanner and then be able to reliably access those images.

Is great when it works

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just bought and installed this product for my 5000+ picture files. It found them and organized them with ease according to date. The instant fix part is great especially for people like my wife who is not inclined to spend all day with a more intensive program such as Photoimpact or Photoshop. I use Windows XP pro on a pentium III laptop. The only problem though is that the program crashed everytime I was using (about 5 times). And then for some reason, it screwed up my computer. I couldn't open up folders or anything. I rebooted and still couldn't open up a folder. Once I uninstalled the program, everything was fine again. I suppose this could be the fact that my harddrive needs to be freed up of some space, which will happen when I purchase an external drive to put multimedia on. At that time, I may reinstall this program and try again.

User Rating: 7/10

Nice interface, still a few bugs

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This program is the best one I've found for organizing my thousands of digital camera photos. This is a version 1.0 release, so there have been a few minor bugs in it. I would expect Adobe will have an update out soon to fix these glitches. I have not had any trouble cataloging photos on network drives (unlike the another review). Backing up my photo collection to a network drive was also very simple.

bugware

Pros:

Cons:

Review: crashes when downloading from digital camera. crashes when attempting anything in the "fix" mode.

User Rating: 8/10

nice programs thats even better if u have photoshop 7

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I frequently use photoshop and was waiting for this program so i could manage all of my photos in one place and seemlessly integrate them into photoshop. Although it does a good job it is not quite seemless. All and All this program does a very good job for managing photos. the Auto fix program is good for beginners but not enought for some. ((I still cant get shutterflty or ofoto integrated into it help? Someone?)

User Rating: 5/10

Great for cute creations, horrible for organization

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The program's great if you like making cute greeting cards from pictures. It's horrible for organizing photos. You're forced to use Adobe's generic categories and individually tag every photo. Your entire photo collection (which may consist of hundreds of photos) is shown at one time, instead of readily divided into separate albums. I don't know what Adobe was thinking, but other programs (i.e. *picasa*) seem to organize photos more simply and elegantly. Why use a 200 meg gorilla to do the job when you can use a 4 meg chimp? On the positive side, I did enjoy making cute greeting cards from their plethora of project templates.

User Rating: 7/10

Great product but prone to crashes

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It does exactly what they advertise, make it very easy to quickly search through hundreds of pictures. Tagging took less time than I expected and was fun to go through old photos. After tagging was down, searching for specific people and events was easy. The extra tools are for video CD's, printing, and more are easy to use but fairly simple in what they allow you to do. I have had frequent problem with the application crashing as noted on the Adobe support site, but one nice feature is you never have to File->Save, everything is automatically saved every time you make a change so each crash does not lose any work. Overall, it's been a great way for me to organize the 1000 or so photos that I've taken over the years most of which were not well labelled or organized.

User Rating: 7/10

DOES NOT support network drives - makes a nice program useless

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Overall a very nice program BUT if you use network drives the program MUST copy the photos over to the local drive. This negates the entire concept of "cataloging" photos "whereever they are." Adobe has so far said "tuff luck" - that's the way it works...
