"Acer does not make repair parts for this machine" on by CarlsbadRealtor

    Pros: compact computer, laptop technology

Cons: laptop technology, proprietary repair parts unavailable.

Summary: Be sure to get an extended warranty, and be sure to use it before it expires, because Acer does not make repair parts for their computers.

I got an Acer Aspire L100 desktop, last years model of the L310. It attracted me because of its small size (which translates to "laptop interior hardware"). Without an extended warranty, the motherboard gave up after 16 months. OK, so I took the computer to local repair shops. They could not get a replacement part for the motherboard. I called Acer and their responose was to send me to a bunch of websites that they said resold their parts. None of those vendors carried the part. I emailed Acer the following:

I purchased my computer 16 months ago (month and year above is correct. Day is approximate). I did not buy the warranty as I was told Acer was "renowed for its reliability". I felt if it lasted throught the first 12 months then there were no manufactuing defects and is should run for years like my Gateway (9 years) and Dells(7 and 2, so far). Well the computer no longer boots up. The fan runs and the CD drive accepts and rejects CD's but the power light does not go on and the computer will not boot. I spoke with your techical support and they suggested, since my warranty had run out, I contact my local trusted PC repairman. I did. It appears the power supply and motherboard are integrated in this model. We have tried to find the replacement part and have been unable to do so. We
have called Acer and you said you did not have the part but gave us the name of a couple websites to try. They do not have the part. I seems to me that your product should last more that 16 months and if it doesn't you should be able to provide the necessary parts to repair it. I am extremely frustrated at this point. Please provide me with the realiable name of a place I can get the parts needed. I was told you would charge $449 to repair it out of warranty! I could buy a new one for that although there is no way at this point that I would ever purchase an Acer again.

    Acer's reply:

Thank you for contacting Acer America. I apologize for the inconvenience that you have experienced.
There is no definite time on when a computer part will fail. Note that we have manufactured hundreds of the computer model that you have. If the motherboard of your computer failed, it does not mean that the other computers of the same model will also fail. We do not have a list of all third party parts provider that sell notebook parts.

Bottom line: If you are going to manufacture a computer, then you need to make repair parts available. After a little over a year, there are no repair parts available?? That is kind of a fraudulent way to do business, I think.

"ACER Abandons Customers" on by KaaDeg

Pros: System was a great concept and worked well until it died. ACER has ZERO support for the Aspire L310. My bet is that during the warranty period they will probably be unable to repair and do a whole unit swap. Which could be a good thing.

Cons: ACER has zero support for the Aspire L310. System ran fine for about 18 months and then stopped working. Seems that after warranty period ACER will have nothing to do with repairing this product. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN!!!!

Summary: Because this is a "mini" PC repair is almost impossible. I did what ACER suggested and took my system to the Geek Squad at Best Buy. Just got the estimate back; $850.00 to repair. I only paid $550.00 plus or minus, for the system new.

Bottom-line, is don't buy a mini-PC from ACER unless you factor in the cost of replacing the entire machine with 18-24 months from the date of purchase. They just don't care about their customers

"no replacement parts ,low battery life" on by davidlharwood

Pros: it works fine and has an atractive price

Cons: computors are used in work and school settings and are relied on to store important infomation if acer is not going to make replacement parts for its products then it should have to be added in ther advertisement adds in bold highlighted print,,!!!!

Summary: i happen to owne an acer aspire 3680 i purchased in july 07 and so far nothing catitrophic has happend yet ,but have had problems with a few of the keys popping off and while i have found a websight where ther are keyboards sold ther are none for the 3680 ofcorce ,also the battery life is advertised as having farmore charge life than it actualy has .also the scroll buttons under the mouse pad work when they desire and have you have to apply much more presure than you should have to to get it to work .also the speakers dont have the quality sound you would expect nore the volume dosent get loud enoug for me.other than that i do like the inner workings seem to respond well it dosent freez up the windows vista works well enough eventhough i like xp better i think ,but over all the aspire 3680 work well enough but im just finding out about the deal about no replacement parts and that bothers me because it seem like a rip off to the consumer and in thease days we need more reliable equipment ,and i may have baught one acer but i wont buy another and wouldnt have baught this one knowing i couldnt have it repaired ,even though acer offers an extended warrente ,i guess i should have broke it somehow and sent it back to get a new computor from acer ,,,but wouldnt that be wrong of me and ripping off acer ,well anyways i guess thats what companys are breading in people ,,because thats the only way around this problem acer has caused by not making replacement parts for ther computor ,yeah i purchased a cheeper computor for my teenage son,but next time i will spend the money on a computor i know i can get parts for

"Fine while it worked" on by jnholian

Pros: small form factor, powerful enough for what I needed

    Cons: Stopped turning on.

Summary: I really wanted to like this computer. The small form factor is nice, and the processing power is fine for what I needed (internet access, word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, digital photos, etc). The cooling fan is occasionally loud, but that wasn't a big deal for me. My system came loaded with Vista (not sure which version), and the graphics system was able to power the aero glass feature just fine.
The problem is that the computer won't turn on anymore. When I push the power button, the blue power light turns on for a second, something inside the computer makes a grinding, "I think I can" kind of noise, and then it quits, and nothing happens. It is exactly as frustrating as it sounds. I've had the system for about 4 months. I expected better.
