"CNET Tests with Phenom 9500 TLB Bug BIOS Workaround?"
Pros: nice specs
Cons: questionable CPU BUG
Summary: So, Rich
I see your M5100 review was dated one day before AMD came out with a new Phenom CPU 9550 that fixed the Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) Bug in the original Phenom 9500 CPU -- see
TechReport http://tinyurl.com/2ad27j
and Wikipedia http://tinyurl.com/5bo9c5.
My questions are:
1) In the Acer Aspire M5100 that you tested had Acer (probably?) implemented AMD's recommended BIOS Workaround for the defective Phenom 9500 CPU -- in other words, do your test results already reflect the degraded performance WITH the TLB workaround. Because , as the above links show, the TLB workaround causes a 13.7% average degradation, and up to 50% degradation of its performance with apps like Firefox 2.0.
2) Which Phenom CPU is NOW in the currently shipping Acer Aspire M5100 machines sold via CompUSA, NewEgg, etc., the buggy 9500 or the corrected 9550?
Just by the by, the %50 difference in price between NewEgg and CompUSA for the M5100 seems to be due mainly to the CompUSA model having a PCI ATI Radeon HD2400 installed, rather than the (onboard?) X1250 video card.
Thanks for any insights regarding the CPU in the shipping M5100s because i just bought one at CompUSA on the strength of your review -- it arrives soon -- if i learn anything, i'll post it here. GaroldS
