Take one look at the Area-51 from Alienware, and what do you see? Dodge Viper for your home office? Desktop system from outer space? With its otherworldly, molded-plastic case and internal neon light, the Area-51 looks uncannily like a creature from, say, Alien vs. Predator. Based on Intel's new 875P chipset (code-named Canterwood) and a 3GHz Pentium 4 processor, the Area-51 matches its exterior with real prowess under the hood. It comes tricked out with the latest graphics and audio subsystems and bundles some of the best speakers in the industry. While Alienware's systems have cost relatively more in the past, the company has actually priced this new model below some of its competitors, which generally come housed in staid tower cases appropriate to midrange users. In other words, if you like the aesthetics of the Area-51 case, or even if you simply don't mind them, you should seriously consider this amazing computer.

Editors' note: (4/17/03) The Serial ATA hard drives that were included in our Area-51 test system won't be available from Alienware until the end of this month.

Alienware must be going through its blue period.

On the outside, the Area-51 looks about as different from a standard, beige tower system as it possibly could. For one thing, the sleek, angry-looking case comes in seven custom colors with a matching keyboard and mouse. (You can save a little cash if you choose these devices in generic black.) But even more dramatic, Alienware has added a sculpted, plastic shell to the metal, full-tower case. While this flair may be aesthetically pleasing to some, it results in a hefty, unwieldy case. We also question the durability of the plastic latches and knobs on the outer shell.

Count 'em: 10 USB 2.0 ports in all.

On the inside, the system is more recognizable as a computer, but it sets itself apart from the competition in other ways. You'll need a screwdriver to remove the side panel, which is a bit awkward to take off because of its funky shape. Once you have the panel detached, you must disconnect the power cable from the cooling fan mounted in its side before you can remove it completely. Indeed, you'll find seven exhaust fans inside your Area-51, with room for at least one more. Surprisingly, noise isn't an issue, and neither is keeping this turbocharged system from overheating.

The full-tower case leaves you plenty of open space to expand.
The case's interior is neatly appointed. Cables snake around the periphery, well out of your way, and there's plenty of room to upgrade. Four of our evaluation system's five PCI slots were free, and the case offered five additional drive bays, even though it was already loaded with two optical drives and dual hard drives. The motherboard features four DIMM slots, two of which were free in our test system.

You'll find plenty of connectivity options, as well. The Area-51's case features 10 USB 2.0 ports (4 are front-mounted), along with a full complement of legacy ports and full surround-sound audio connectors. This is the first system we've seen where the number of USB ports hit double digits. A single FireWire connector can be found around the back, but we'd also like to see one brought to the front of the case.

The Alienware Area-51 is one of the first systems we've tested with Intel's new 875P chipset (code-named Canterwood) and a 3GHz Pentium 4 processor. This new chipset features an 800MHz frontside bus that accommodates faster system memory, in this case, 400MHz PC3200 DDR SDRAM. Like Intel's previous P4 processors running at 3GHz, this chip features Hyper-Threading technology, which allows a processor to run two parts of an application at once.

A top-notch duo: the Lite-On CD-RW drive and the Pioneer DVD-recordable drive.
Above the white PCI slots is ATI's best: the Radeon 9800 Pro.

Beyond the Area-51's core processing and memory subsystems, the secondary components within are difficult to improve upon. The included 52X/24X/52X CD-RW drive and the Pioneer DVR-A05, a CNET Editors' Choice award winner, are the highest-quality optical combination you can find. Our test system also boasted dual Serial ATA 120GB Seagate hard drives, running through a new integrated RAID controller, which is built into the Canterwood board. (Alienware estimates that the Serial ATA hard drives won't be available for sale until the end of April.)

In terms of gaming, graphics, and video, it's no surprise that the Area-51 features the industry's newest and fastest graphics card, the 128MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. The Radeon 9800 Pro delivers huge frame rates and ultrasmooth video playback with rich, realistic colors. Match that with an Audigy 2 sound card, which supports DVD audio and 6.1 surround sound, hooked up to a killer set of Logitech Z-680 THX-certified speakers, and you have perhaps the best combination of multimedia components on the market today.

The small, flat red cables are evidence of the Serial ATA interface for the two hard drives.
Bright, brighter, or brightest? You decide.

Our system shipped with a black, 19-inch NEC 991SB CRT display with a flat DiamondTron screen. Graphics looked sharp and rich in our tests, even at the upscale 1,792x1,344 maximum resolution that the Radeon card supports. But while we liked the monitor's three ultrabright settings, which are great for bumping up the screen's luminance for working with fine text or graphics, we found its onscreen menu system totally unintuitive. We also found it odd that Alienware offers only one LCD panel choice--and an exorbitant 20-inch model, at that. Otherwise, you have to go the CRT route or buy your display somewhere else.

The company offers only Microsoft Works Suite 2003 or Office XP Professional as added-cost productivity software options, and our system came with neither. Alienware does not offer Alien Adrenaline--its proprietary video-optimizing software--for this system because it does not yet support overclocking with the Radeon 9800 card. Serious gamers will definitely want to be on the lookout for a new version of this utility, which offers pinpoint control of most aspects of your display hardware, even allowing you to set up a number of display presets specific to various programs.

Application performance
Comparing systems using the new Intel 875P chipset is like comparing a Porsche and a Ferrari. Any system using the new chipset will perform at incredible speeds, so you really can't go wrong. The Alienware Area-51 is no exception. Its application and Internet-content-creation performance proved outstanding, but when compared to the performance of other systems with the new chipset, the Alienware fell right in the middle of the pack. No matter your computing needs and desires, this system will be up to the task and more.

To measure application performance, CNET Labs uses BAPCo's SysMark2002, an industry-standard benchmark. Using off-the-shelf applications, SysMark measures a desktop's performance using office-productivity applications (such as Microsoft Office and McAfee VirusScan) and Internet-content-creation applications (such as Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Dreamweaver).

3D graphics and gaming performance
The Alienware Area-51 uses the new ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card, which is all the 9700 Pro was and more. Its 3DMark2001 performance is among the fastest we've seen to date and beat Nvidia's new GeForce FX Ultra by a healthy margin. Quake III performance did not change significantly, but it didn't really need to since it was already running at ridiculously high frame rates. The 9800 Pro can handle anything and any game you can throw at it.

To measure 3D graphics performance, CNET Labs uses Futuremark's 3DMark2001 Pro Second Edition, Build 330. We use 3DMark to measure a desktop's performance with the DirectX 8 (DX8) interface at both 16- and 32-bit color settings at a resolution of 1,024x768. A system that does not have DX8 hardware support will typically generate a lower score than one that has DX8 hardware support.

To measure 3D gaming performance, CNET Labs uses Quake III Arena. Although Quake III is an older game, it is still widely used as an industry-standard tool. Quake III does not require DX8 hardware support--as 3DMark2001 does--and is therefore an excellent means of comparing the performance of low- to high-end graphics subsystems. Quake III performance is reported in frames per second (fps).

Alienware distinguishes itself from many other PC companies in the service and support department. Most importantly, the company retains an in-house support staff trained specifically on its own systems, rather than outsourcing support calls to a third party. So, when you call with a problem, the technician on the other end of the line should know exactly what you're talking about.

Your calls are toll-free, and tech support is available 24/7. The Alienware support site is robust, featuring interactive customer forums, game patches, driver downloads, and instructional upgrade videos. The company also preloads its proprietary Alien Autopsy diagnostic software on every system it sells. In the event of a problem, the software provides the Alienware technical staff with an incident report, including more than 30,000 fields of data, which helps them diagnose the trouble.

At the quoted price, our system included only a one-year warranty with onsite service. You can upgrade to three years for $195 more, though we feel that systems priced in this range should include multiyear coverage. If you run into trouble under warranty, you can request that a technician come to your house or business to fix the problem, you can send the system back to the company, or you can request parts to be sent to you and fix it yourself. In any case, the service costs you nothing. And if a required part is out-of-date, Alienware will replace it with the newer model at no cost. The company even offers an upgrade policy, allowing PC customers to purchase new components at cost.

pricey and not worth it since acquistion by major brand

Pros: was a great gaming machine

Cons: huge case; no real "in house service" on 3 yrs service contract as advertised

Review: Don't try to get the case back if you have to open it cos it will never fit properly again. The flashy lights which looked very cool burnt out quickly. The installed graphics card can't be upgraded without a major overhaul because there's not enough power to run the newer cards. Once you figure the cost and labor of that, it's cheaper to keep this one and use it for the Sony station games (excluding Vanguard which looks CRAP on this machine) and buy a cheap laptop with a different card to run the newest most trendy mmorpgs. Their customer support is AWFUL. Most of them do not speak colloquial English let alone gamer speak. We had a service issue on the date of delivery with one of my machines ( I have 2 )...I had to ship it back to get a repair which I thought I had paid for with my 3 year in house warranty. I've replaced 5 mice and 4 keyboards since the initial purchase. The machine often abruptly BSODs but always reboots. It has done this since purchase with no hint of a heat issue and no pattern to the routine. All the vents for the much needed fans are major dust magnets. On the plus I gotta admit even now this machine boots faster than my friends brand new machines. The sound card if you chose the Audigy 2 is a lovely piece of work. Since Alienware was recently acquired by a major brand I fully expect the already poor customer service to go right to the bottom alongside the major brands customer service. The major brand has a decent product but the absolute WORST customer service I have ever encountered.

Very poor Technical Support/Customer Service

Pros: Looks, Options

Cons: Customer Service is the worst I have ever expeienced

Review: I bout one of these back in November and they still have not been able to get it to work with the full 4gb memory it came with. They have told me to just use 2GB and wait until they figure it out. They have had the System back in their Tech center two times and it took 3 months to get it back each time. Good luck if you buy one, because if you have any problems you will regret it.

Alienware the illusion of service

Pros: The website is really good

Cons: Alienware hates Canadians

Review: Worst mistake purchase ever. It took 2 days to actually order the machine, I had to scan and send copies of my Credit Card and Drivers License as photo copies were not good enough. Once ordered, I had it shipped to my house which was a mistake since I'm at work during the day. I tried to pick it up from the depot, but they needed Alienware’s permission for me to do that, which took another 2 days.

I pick the machine up. Yay, I got my new Alienware 5500, let the good times roll... except it doesn’t work. Apparently in their 200 point quality inspection they failed to notice that the video card doesn’t work. Call tech support which is conveniently open 24 hours per day. Very scripted support I felt like the technician was reading a step through of how to troubleshoot a computer problem. 3 hours of wasted time later, he tells me the video card is broken and needs to be replaced. To get a new one though, I will have to pay for the shipping of the new video card; a piece that I already bought and had shipped but it didn't work.

I was not very happy about this and called everyone that would listen at Alienware to complain. Even up to the manager level all I got was scripted responses; fake empathy but ultimately sticking to the policy of me paying for the shipping.

I agree to have the part shipped to me at my expense, but ask the question “What if it wasn't the video card and it was actually the motherboard that is broken?” If that’s the case I will also have to pay for that piece to be shipped as well, and the real kicker I also have to pay the shipping to send the broken piece back to Alienware or I will be charged for the replacement part.

I pray it is just the video card and ask for it to be shipped. 12 days later, no video card has arrived yet. I call them again and ask where my card is. It hasn't been shipped yet and no one will tell me why.

I cancel the video card shipment and want to return the machine. No problem here I just have to pay for the shipping to get the machine back to Alienware and they will charge me a 15% restocking fee, not just on the parts of the machine either the restocking fee applies to the warranty and all other Alienware quality services I purchased. How do you restock a warranty I wonder.

I am very upset now and want to speak to anyone above the manager level. Again all I get are scripted responses with promises that someone will call me back, but no one ever did.

Today I spent an hour at Purolator filling out paperwork to send this thing back to the states. Try and guess how easy it is to send a computer into the states these days. Also 84lbs... the shipping was expensive, add the 15% restocking fee and I really got screwed, my wife is never going to let me buy anything again.

So roughly $400 later and I do not have the super gaming machine I was hoping for, but I do get to tell you this story. I hope you can now buy somewhere else and be happier for it.

It is really an "X-File" experience...

Pros: Different Case Looking!!! Reliable if system works properly...

Cons: Heavy Case, Poor Technical Support Knowledge, Lots of Mislead Info from Technical Support Team, Sales & Customer Support Team Lack Of Telling The Truth, Lots Of Patience & Money to make it work!!!

Review: I really had a very bad initial-experience with my Alienware desktop... I invested both a lot of time and money to make it work!!! Sales & Customer support team has the small tendency of not telling you the truth... Technical support very friendly but lack lots of knowledge...
The 3-year warranty: 24/7 on-site, jajaja!!! A complete joke... At the beginning I took my system to a local company called "PC Professor" here in West Palm Beach, and they were the ones who helped me (For a nominal fee of course) get my Alienware to operate in optimal conditions!!! Alienware "SWEARS" that their systems undergo a 200-check point test... So when your computer arrives, they are 100% worry-free ready to perform... This is why it takes 4 to 6 weeks to get shipped!!!
After the long wait, you expect your system to work extremely well right??? Guess what, mine did not work when first plugged in... Have you ever been so happy in one minute, then to be so frustrated, sad, angry, and inconsolably dissatisfied… My first action was to return the “darn” thing… Well, guess what, they have a 15% re-stocking fee if you want to return your merchandise… Why? Because when you order a system from them is solely customized and tailored to your needs only; is a special item for you only!!! So, be aware, Alienware sells customized systems, and that’s why they get away with that 15% re-stocking fee… 15% re-stocking fee represented almost $550.00 for me… Did not have any choice but to die with my Alienware system… After a while, I got smarter than that, and I started solving problems instead of being a cry baby… This misfortune and incident, gave me the opportunity to negotiate a free MS Office XP Professional Edition with them in exchange of all the bad… I found a reliable third party repair-computer company that assisted me very well, and made friends with the repair techs… And now, when I have a problem with my Alienware, I take my system to my buddies (now) for a no-cost repair, upgrade, etc… Of course, I invested a lot in the beginning, but now, I am all right with this third-party company… Long time ago, in the beginning, I requested the 24/7 on-site tech-support, and two guys showed up (not at the same time), just to tell me they did not have any idea what was wrong with my system… ;) They suggested me to return the computer, based on the fact they were getting way to many calls from “Alienware” users… Of course, since they were coincidentally, third-party contractors, they ignored the 15% re-stocking fee rule by Alienware!!!!
Hey, good luck for those willing to adventure buying an “ALIENWARE” system!!! One thing I can assure you folks, you will learn a lottttttttttttttttt from this experience!!! For instance, you will learn how not to buy from companies like these ones… You will learn how to do a more in depth research!!! You will research a local-trustable computer company, so you can build your own system, with the parts you want and for the purposes you need!!! The advantages: Talking “personally” to a real tech person: Priceless!!! If these little-bitty companies happened to fail you, at least you have the person to person pressure to force them do the right thing!!! Or get your money back ahhh??? No re-stocking fees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have really been so impartial when I wrote this article… My friends, coworkers, bosses, and business-like partners, know and qualify me as a trustable person!!! Hope the “ALIENWARE” people turn around the entire negative!!! They really possess a great idea and concept!!! In theory, these systems seemed pretty good!!! They only need to work when put together… That’s all… ;)
Thank you for reading my opinion, and hope I have helped a lot of you!!!

''Alienation-ware'' or ''Alien-beware'' would be more accurate.

Pros: Never got the computer to find out

Cons: 30 days of lies and still no computer

Review: Worst company I’ve ever dealt with. TERRIBLE service, with outright lies. Here's my history with them:

12/20 Placed order and sent cashier’s check by express mail. Estimated ship date was January 2.

12/22 Check received. Phase 3.

12/30 Called to find out why still Phase 3. Told the silver cases had gone out of stock immediately after my order was placed. Fortunately, green had come in (the color I had really wanted anyway) and I changed the order. Told to check back on 1/3 to make sure of change.

Wait – Premium price ($3,500) should mean premium service. Why is it my job to make sure that customer support is doing their jobs correctly? Why hadn’t anyone contacted me as soon as the shortage was found so that I could at least know, and why did I have to ASK for a substitution of equal value?

1/3 Called and was told that change hadn’t gone through yet. I should check again the following day.

1/4 Called and was told that change still hadn’t been approved AND computer was now in production with silver case. By the time change would go up for approval, computer would be too far along.

1/4 Called again to speak with manager. Was forced to tell story to rep so she’d let me speak with manager, then she didn’t pass any info along. Had to tell story all over again to manager, who agreed to stop build so change could be approved. Would be 4-5 day delay.

1/4 Sent email to company expressing dissatisfaction with service thus far.

1/6 Received response to email with apology, statement that changes had been approved, and promise that I would from here forward receive “highest standard of service in the industry.”

1/9 Phase 8 already! Computer’s being tested.

1/10 Still phase 8. Called to find out why. Told had failed inspection and sent back, then returned to phase 8 two hours later. Promised would ship in 24-48 hours.

1/12 Still hadn’t shipped. Called and was told Billing & Finance had placed a block on it. Priscilla promised she’d get the block removed so it could ship on 1/13. I should call back then. (I paid by cashier’s check, remember. What possible reason could exist for this block?)

1/13 Called and block was still there. Was promised computer would ship next day. (Saturday? They’re not even open!) Finally had enough; informed rep I was starting recording of call and stated I wanted a refund. Rep “expressly forbade” me from recording. (Guess they’ve heard that sort of thing often – my question is, if the company has great service, why be afraid to be recorded?) Anyway, I’m in AZ and the law says only one party (me) needs to consent to the recording. Rep transferred me to refund department after long hold. New rep tried to save sale and promised that SHE would be my personal contact from here forward, even if I had technical problems in the future. I asked if she was qualified in technical support. No, but I should still call her and she would transfer me to their “best support person.” Like I can believe that. Insisted on canceling order, which she did. Due to stories on here about computers shipping after cancellation, I made sure this wouldn’t happen. Asked how long refund would take and was told I’d have my money in 24-48 hours. How? They don’t have a credit card for me, so would have to send a check. After another hold was told I’d receive the check late next week. I’ll believe it when I see it.

When you make any luxury purchase, you expect to receive top quality product and top level service. $3,500 for a desktop computer IS a luxury purchase. Their site claims “first-class customer service and support,” but I received terrible customer service and in many cases had to do the reps’ jobs for them. And all of this was before I’d even received the computer. I shudder to imagine what things would be like once the computer arrived, much less after the 90 day warranty expired. Except that after reading the reviews on this site I don’t have to imagine and am glad I quit when I did. Honestly, I should have known better just from the warranty. 90 days standard? They either don't believe their computers are going to last very long or they're out to make even more money by charging through the nose for warranties. Either way, it's not a good deal for us customers.

I really wanted this to work; my friends were all jealous over the computer I was going to be getting. Now a month later I’m just going to be happy to get my money back so I can shop someplace else.

Great computer, great customer service

Pros: Called customer service twice for a problem with the dvd drive. A rep picked up after a few rings both times, they were courteous and helpful. Computer works beautifully even after 2.5 years.

don't buy this pc

Pros: doesnt have any

Cons: piece of crap

Review: I bought the area 51 7500 and right out of the box it was junk. The liquid cooled CPU ran at 68 degree celcius, alienware makes claims of 35-40 degree celcius. The pc was as loud as a jet engine, alienware makes claims of 35Db (as quiet as a wisper), this is a lie, the pc is very loud. All in all DO NOT BUY THIS PC!!!! you will get nothing but trouble, broken promises, and major attitude from tech support and customer service. And alienware will steal 15% of your money when u return the piece of crap.

dissatisfied

Pros: system was very stable

Cons: good luck with any support.

Review: you won't get your money's worth buying it from alienware. get the components yourself and build it. You give up having a warranty with the home built system, but as I have found out, Alienware will do their best not to honor their warranty on their systems.

I wish I had know before I ever shelled out that kind of money for one of their systems.

Alienware never honour mail-in rebates

Pros: Machine works well enough

Cons: Mail-in rebates are never honoured

Review: Although the machine I purchased works well enough, do note that Alienware do not honour mail-in rebates under any circumstances. Bear that in mind when evaluating the machine's price.

VERY over-rated

Pros: seems stable/powerful enough, O.K. looks

Cons: the cost of that mediocre stabality and those O.K. looks

Review: Well it does do the job as a gaming pc, but you can do A LOT better (and cheaper) from a dealer like newegg.com or an equivalent vendor, as in you can spend two thousand less and get a better system. If it's the spiffy looking case you're after, you can buy "custom" gaming cases from other vendors for about $60-$130.

Pros: Fast--Awesome tower--Easy to mod

Cons: EXPENSIVE--noisy fans--tower bit too big--crappy indian tech service

Review: This computer is , well , not bad. It is really fast compared to other computers i have used, and it looks cool but i had some problems =). It was my first time upgrading from a POS Compaq presario + IBook sooooooooooooo i wanted to do a bit of exploring =) So i screwed up the pc once in a while from being curious about what this and that does. SO i call the tech support................... if you like to wait on the phone for a couple hours waiting for a tech support that barly speaks english and he tells you to reinstall windows for an easy thing like a not-working printer this is the computer for you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any way everythings cool except for tech support, noisy fans, and bulky tower.

STAY AWAY !! Rip off !!

Pros: none none none

Cons: customer support, screen colors, $$$, not as advertised

Review: Bought in 2004 an an Area 51M 766 and paid a premium price (almost $4,000!) for the advertised graphic card interchangeability. Guess what, false advertising; they never made any other graphic cards for it and do not plan to they said ?! I should have sued them. The 16'1" screen had washed out colors. Customer support is terrible (they do not speak clear enough english and know nothing about PCs). And last but not least, the support area of their web site is pswd protected. When I recently sold the laptop they would not allow the new owner to register so I had to give him all my passwords, making him aware of all my personal info, credit card included. Ridiculous ! Stay Away from this company!!

An Expensive Joke

Pros: nice looking

Cons: Policies are anti-customer, low end parts

Review: This is the most expensive system in the market and it is also the lowest in benchmark and compatibility test. Many glitches in the system and the tech dept is clueless. Return & Warranty policy is shrewd. Will get the same system for 60% less on other company. Can't even play a decent DOOM 3 in low settings.

What a rip off

Pros: There are NO pros to this machine as it doesn't work and alienware wont fix it

Cons: Terrible tech support, customer service, non-functional machine

Review: Ordered an Alienware computer in January. Top of the line, spared NO expense. A month later they shipped the PC only. A month after that they shipped the monitor, a month after that they shipped all the peripherals. Then the thing resets itself every hour. 15 hours on their tech support line and it still doesn't work. And they wont take it back to fix it. I then told them I wanted to return it and they flat out refused to take it back. This experience was SO bad I filed a complaint with the better business bureau.

Outstanding

Pros: Looks, Speed, Power

Cons: None found so far.

Review: Purchased Area-51 3500 with 20.1 monitor. Outstanding computer a look that cant be matched. Speed is great and quality control when being build is unmatched. I parted out the computer and you can build these machines for less but you don’t get the Alienware style. Yes, Alieware is a bit on the pricy side but so is a Ferrari and that is what you are getting. Only think that made me think is they try and sell you a extended warrantee stating changing a video card could cost up to 800 bucks. LOL, I don’t know what kind of video card they are talking about but most of the ones in the basic machine don’t even cost 200 bucks. A little misleading if you ask an IT for over 9 years. Over all you need to have one of these just once in your lifetime….

Rebate scam

Cons: rebate scam, expensive,software conflicts

Upset Alienware Customer - $500 Rebate WARNING

Pros: Received merchandise correctly

Cons: Rebate TRAP

Review: I wholeheartedly advise you if you are considering buying one of Alienware's computers that has a mail-in rebate that you do not do so on the assumption that you will receive the rebate. I ordered my Alienware computer in November and mailed in for a $500 rebate.
I have just got off the phone with Customer Service representative Sandro,
and he informs me that due to a missing invoice that I will not receive my
rebate. I filled out all information as stated on the rebate form at the
time, and mailed it in. I really need the rebate now, and was
counting on Alienware to send it to me. I was referred an e-mail address
as the last step of appeal, and they would not route me up to higher levels of escalation. I have not gotten a response from the appeal e-mail address. All I want is my rebate, Alienware is doing instant rebates now, but will still not mail me my rebate check.

They did not even give me notice like some rebate companies do that they needed more information. They just let it lapse, and then told me that I could not get it regardless.

My final option now is to just warn future potential customers of this faux pas.

The wait times are long, you spend a lot of money, with a promise of getting a fraction of it back (if you consider $500 a fraction), and then get told that you will not receive it because of something stupid such as a missing invoice. (WHO KNOWS WHAT IT MAY BE WITH YOUR ORDER, MAYBE A MISSING PHONE NUMBER?)

OVERALL: IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING BUYING AN ALIENWARE WITH A REBATE, I WOULD ADVISE GOING TO COMPETITORS WITH NO REBATE TRAPS AND FASTER SERVICE!

Cons: The cable management snap on doesn't fit when you have the monitor adapter.

Review: 19 days after I ordered my Alienware Area 51 5550, it came and this included an order change. I have had it for a week now. Everything worked great right out of the box. So far all has been good. When I've called Tech Support, they have helped, even if they had to check with someone else first. They even included 3 years warranty with onsite service free even though it was only offered after my initial order. I love the coomputer.

Name Brand Parts, Good Price

Pros: Name Brand Parts, Nearly Flawless

Cons: No good deals on LCD monitors

Review: I am a comp tech & work in computer/eletronics sales. So I didn't want to end up with a bad machine. Dell had such a great deal so I bought one, BIG mistake it was a piece of garbage, so I had to find a new machine to replace it and I didn't want a nother peice of junk, so I spent a little extra and bought from Alienware. Alienware used all name brand components on the machine which is more then I can say for Dell, HP/Compaq + Gateway. I had to return my Dell because it was all inferior parts made by Samsung (including the V-card) and replaced it with this computer. Whoever says Dell has good tech support must be being paid by Dell, they have the worst tech support in history. 20 min + wait times and techs who don't even know what PSU is. Don't waste your money on companies that buy the cheapest parts in bulk and throw them into your machine and don't product test it, (LIKE DELL!) and get a computer with name brand parts and one that is well optimized. (Norton 2003 Windoctor only found 16 errors on my Alienware PC vs 300+ on my Dell that I sent back!) not to mention my Alienware PC didn't have ram failure out of the box like my Dell did...

Pros: It's Fast. Excellent for Gamers. Great warranty with 24/7 tech support. Great looks with excellent features. Very stable. It got to my house less than 7 days after payment has been received. Love the alien ice cooling system and alien autopsy.

Cons: For some odd reason, it didn't come with the power supply chord. But I'm pretty sure that it doesn't happen alot with other people. Lucky enough I had an extra one.

Forget about getting one now.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just cancelled my order for a custom PC with Alienware today. They were two weeks late and had no idea when they would even be starting on my machine. When I asked for a description of the problems they were having getting started, I was told that they were short of a component on my system. When I asked which component and could I swap it for another model, I was told they were out of motherboards and they are not using any other models in their systems. I was shocked and asked them if they couldn't build mine, were they able to build anyone else's and they said NO. Good greif, can you imagine a computer company that can't assemble computers because they have no motherboards? I can't either. Long story short, if your system is stuck in "Phase 3", you cannot expect your machine for at least another two months. I wish I could have recieved my machine, but a three month wait is just silly.

WOW. I love it the new case is very big, but very cool. I 've been playing my games on a 19 inch nec monitor with everything maxed to the limit and it hasn't blinked once. It's got it on the inside too.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: You guys that are saying you can build a better system cheaper are ridiculous. You choose every component that goes in the box, and all they use is fully featured full versions of the best hardware available. Their wiring and attention to detail is second to none, and they are constantly the best priced gaming machine out there. Yes it takes some time to get your system. They are all hand built to order and they are put through a rigorous testing program. That takes time. They even cost less than a Dell, and Dell uses proprietary crappy hardware, not full featured retail versions. Alienware's are completely upgradable, and they sell you upgrade parts at great prices. If you're under warranty, they'll pay to ship the system to their plant in Florida, and install those upgrades for you for free. All you pay is the discounted price for hardware. Excellent company, excellent product.

ALIENWARE IS DOING JUST FINE.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: **I just ordered my second Alienware and I am damn sure it will be a "kick-ass" system. My previous system was a 1998 Area-51 that had lasted me 5 1/2long years!!, It is now time to upgrade. I was contemplating building my own PC and did about a month of research on parts listed at newegg.com and various other sites. Alienware builds a high-end, well-inspected machine for a matching price if not less than other companies such as dell. FACT: Dell computers are inspected by automated machines for approximately 20-50minutes or less, then packaged in boxes for shipping. My time is very important and for those of you that have the cash-flow, this is an excellent system for you to buy. For those of you who have had bad experience w/ alienware, tough luck... There are always a few people that are dissatisfied, thats life. This is a highly profitable company with im sure 100's of buyers a week. Voodooo PC and Falcon-Northwest's are EVEN MORE insanely OVER-PRICED, and who gives a ****, if their wires are more tightly bound and tucked away behind the motherboard. Alienware does just the same w/ its cases, without hiring a freaking "oragmi artist" to bundle their wires. The airflow in my last system was great and the airfow and ergonomics of my new system will surpass that. The Gaming industry is what shapes computers these days!!! Motherboards and VIDEOCARDS ARE PUT To their extremes by these machines. That is why companies keep shoveling out these new hardware products almost everyweek!, DELL IS JUST REALIZING THIS AND has started their own XPS Gaming sytem line. Since this system is rather new, I do not have any comments on it, but it does have mostly the same INNER components as the new Alienwares. I have nothing but good experiences with Alienware's 24/7 tech support, (and no they sounded russian or something, not pakistani, although this does not matter). This is a company that updates their components list on their system configurators every day. They only offer the best. Alienware caters to the gamer, and they do nothing short of building perfect dream-machines. My system: Intel Pentium 4 (canterwood) i875p chipset, 3.0 ghz p4 800mhz fsb, Corsair 512mb pc-3200 ddr Ram, ATI Radeon 9800 pro 128mb ddr, Seagate Barracuda 120gb SATA HDD, crative sb audigy 2, 3 year on-site warranty, and a bunch of extras. +Plus I got $285.00 in rebates, and TAX-FREE. I DID NOT SEE VOODOO OR FALCON, AT THIS YEARS E3, WHICH was even better for Alienware to market its systems. And to the morons that said Alienware sold out by partnering w/ Best BUY, you ARE F**KING IDIOTS, ANY COMPANY'S NUMBER ONE GOAL IS TO INCREASE TOTAL REVENUE AND PROFITS. What they did is exactly how to do that. All of you haters can suck a long one.

For price paid expected better service...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Orignally told 10 ~ 14 days for delivery...Took over 5 weeks to recieve system. Online order status check... waste of time. Inquires with staff via phone and email are slow to respond with meaningful response. Merely told "order is in process" or "is being assembled"... Finally it arrived works great, except missing parts, and did not ship the component ordered. For example, my system missing closing mechanism to close the front panel access to floppy/CD drives & etc... Customer service said another 10 ~ 12 days (which may mean longer..) for repair turnaround... The part that i am missing is no larger than a nickel! perhaps only cost a nickel too! I understand they make good system but you are paying a premium $$$ for it. Just frustrating and grossly disappointed at the level of service I received. For Alienware staff, managers or, better, the principals & owners reading this comment, business 101, customer service, satisfaction, meaningful response, and quality control. Expecially if you are charging TOP DOLLARS! Your "200 point" QC inspection...??? what are you really checking? Bottom line, it performs well and is an attrative system which basically is a super hyped system with a unconventional plastic face lift... Other tech savy individual may be able to build your own any may even be cheaper? But if you are like me and have to purchase, Alienware, you will have to wait and wait and wait... Perhaps next system, I may have to consider the DELLs and etc...

Great system, untouchable CS, FORGET PRICEWATCH!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: When I ordered my first Area 51, it was the man. It was the p3 1.0 with 256 mb of ram, with a 32 mbgforce 2. I paid around 1500 for it, so for all of you who say its way to pricy, you should learn the necessities and extras that ocme with the computer. I can't say how pleased I am with this system, even two years later if I log on to alienware.com and type in my account number, all of the latest drivers and solutions were available for the components of my system. One day, I stood up a little fast from my pc desk and I hit the desk with my knee, causing a fan inside of the case to start making serious noise. I called alienware customer support, they took my name down, and 20 minutes later a COMPETENT, not arab speaking, technical support rep gave me instructions on how to isolate the fan. It was a quick fix, but I literally had to the fight the man off not to give me a new fan. Thats what selling dream pcs is all about. Lastly, if I see one more person who acts hard and says "ooooh pricewatch I'm tough I'm A+" for one, any moron can build a computer, two, I just used your amazing price watch to compare to my system, with the rebates on the alienware it comes within 100 of your precious generic no warranty lack of customer service break in 6 months and you're screwed pars. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but stop blowing price out of proportion. I don't have time to mess around with defect parts, the unprecented CS at alienware has my purchase.

The outside is foreshadowing for the beast that lay within.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Alienware has lead the movement to disprove the other company's claims that people don't care whats on the inside of thier computers as long as it works. Companies like Dell and Gateway or only just learning how to market to one of the largest price points on the market- The Power Systems. Its not just for gamers anymore, now that the DV Editing scene has come to the consumer level, this computer is truly for everyone. I truly side with the people that say "Build you own computer for cheaper," you should. I have a feeling, though, that many of you just are not going to do that. Your the people that Alienware builds computers for. People who want silent power lying in wait for you to pounce on its gaming talents. The bottom line is that if you want power, even at a steep price, and want to name "most" of the components inside your computer. There is no better computer out there, than the Alienware Area-51. But if Alienware's prices truly make your walet feel small, browse thier website for other computers that offer a comparable ammount of power for people on a budget.

Review: First off, if you don't have one of these, stay off the comment line cause you don't know jack. Second, just got my 3GHz 800 MHZ fsb Area 51 last week, and it was worth the wait. Yes it took 2 weeks longer than it was supposed to, but what the hey. Could I have built it cheaper? Sure, if I wanted to scrounge all over hell for the parts at good prices. But, I have a 3 year warranty, and don't have to do anything but plug it in and rip. BTW, Dell and others use dumbed down motherboards, even though they are made by Asus or Abit, and use lower quality memory, etc. They aren't the same.

Four time customer

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought my first Alienware in 1999, followed closely by the system I got for my wife so we could play multiplayer games like System Shock 2 and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction together. I later bought a third system when the hardware warranted it. I had upgraded the other machines until I needed a new motherboard to support the new processors and memory, so I got a new system. I'm currently ordering a new Alienware in their new case with all the latest hardware. I've only had one problem with any of my systems, and that was a video card that burned out after six months of use, they replaced it with an upgraded card free of charge, and it arrived three days after I called and let them know. I've dealt with many computer companies in the past, and I completely trust this company and their support as they really want you to enjoy your system. I'll not buy a computer again from anyone else as long as they continue to offer the best product, at the best prices in the gaming industry. They also offer upgrades at their cost, and now existing customers get $200 off new systems as well. They consistently have the newest hardware first, and they test the heck out of everything they offer so they know which components from which manufacturers work the best. I also have built my own machine, but for the couple of hundred I saved, it wasn't worth the hassles of putting it together and getting it running, and loading and updating all the software and drivers etc. Their cable bundling and assembly is beyond belief too. They also have excellent support and forums for customers as well. They get Editor's Choice Awards and win all the magazine comparisons for a reason. These guys are the real deal.

Great system. Would recommend.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My previous computers were a HP and a Gateway. It did take an extra 2 weeks to receive, they told me originally 21 days to ship. When I did call, my wait was very minimal, I was advised that they were waiting for a part and that they had been swamped with orders over the past month. If you have ever ordered a new car, did it ever come when the dealer told you it would? The computer was easy to set up and ready to go right out of the box. We did have a problem with the speakers not playing, but it was just a matter of checking another box. Customer support was excellent on that call, also. Compared to the Gateway we had, the performance of this computer is fantastic.

Components Inside!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Give me a break. I am tired of all the bickering back and forth over what name brand manufacturer is better. Bottomline: A computer is not the name on the outside of the case. It is the name brand components on the inside of it. If you want a fancy case like Alienware or a basic one from dell then enjoy. If you want to save time, money and hassles with all those customer service people then build your own. Let me repeat one more time. A computer is not the name on the outside of the case. If it were all the parts on the inside would have DELL or Alienware printed on them, which they dont. So lets keep it real!!

Alienware will rise again

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I wasn't sure if I should buy my first Alienware computer or buy another Dell. But after reading this from Chicago Gamers I was more impress with Alienware. This is from Chicago gamers site and after reading about the Alienware, and how the Co-Founder of Alienware call to answer the questions and problems many people have about Alienware. That really change my mind about Alienware. Would Michael Dell call you if you had a problem or any other computer company owner? I don't think so. http://www.chicagogamers.com/forums /showthread.php?s=&postid=17041#pos t17041 MrAnderson CG Moderator Registered: Dec 2002 Location: Prairie Grove, IL Posts: 361 Alienware... Dedicated to being the best I was able to review the recent post regarding Alienware and some expectations that have not been met since ordering your new systems. Of coarse some of you die hards are going to jump in and sat "I told you so... you should build your own system". But I went with Alienware because of there track record and being known through-out the hardcore gamer community as the high performance systems builders that they are. I have been there done that when it come to building systems and I know they rewards as much as I know the trials that comes with going that route. So when I went over the edge like some of you out there I too was just as disappointed recently when my system was taking longer than expected. I too experienced some of the customer service issue. BUT.... when I went to Alienware and told them of the issues going on. They didn't just jump.... the practically jumped from Miami to Chicago. I asked the individual to check out the Chicago Gamers forum and proceeded to go into detail about my issues. Within two hours my phone was ringing. Not just a phone call from a customer service individual but from the Co-Founder of Alienware himself Alex Aguila. Alex was very surprised and very sympathetic to hear what some of us have gone through. He explained that the issues with some of the delays and how customer service is the most important thing to Alienware next to building the ultimate gaming rig. I know this is true when I hear some of the positives from some of you in the recent post. Alienware did not get to were they are at due to luck. They are at the point they are right now due to quality service and quality product. We spoke for about 20 minute. Alex assured me and all others who ever considering buying their dream systems that Alienware will not let you down. Remember earlier I mentioned I have "been there and done that" when it comes to building your own system. Well frankly I have to say poor customer service from some of these parts dotcom’s out there now a day is the norm. I know all of you have had you plus's and minus's with sources of parts suppliers online. My experience has not been nothing but trouble though. That is part of the reason I decided to go with Alienware. I can tell you I have never had a Co-founder call me when I order parts from an online parts site and I sent an email like I did to Alienware. Have you? You’re lucky to get a response let alone have what happened in response to our voices being heard yesterday. At the end of the day... sure my system and all of yours had a slight delay. BUT... I am sure you and I will be proud owners of that stellar new Alienware system. I have been assured by Alex that they are going to make sure that Alienware does not let you down and that they are a leading edge gaming rig powerhouse that is here to do what ever it takes to please customers like you and I. They are dedicated to building systems as if they were your own. Upon wrapping up our conversation Alex said thank you to everyone in the Chicago Gamers community that voiced their opinions. He to has been a gamer since the days of Atari and has seen the industry changed over the years to what it is today. He assures all of us that Alienware is dedicated to the needs of hardcore gamers such as you and I. They listen and get things done. Alex finished up by offering everyone coming to the upcoming LAN Party some Alien"wear" gear as a thank you to all of you that spoke you minds. What does it come down to? Alienware is 110% dedicated to making things happen. They are 110% dedicated to building the ultimate system. But most important to Alex Aguila and everyone at Alienware.... they are 110% dedicated to insuring gamers like you and I get the best customer service in the industry for years to come. Cheaper to build your own eh? Well let’s just see shall we?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Cheaper to build your own eh? Well let’s just see shall we? I'm sick of reading all of these countless, uninformed, AW bashing responses here and elsewhere on the net, that are completely removed from honest, unbiased evaluation. Here are all the components in my New Area 51 sourced on new egg today. The NewEgg total comes to $2240.95 WITHOUT TAXES or SHIPPING!! That’s also not including AlienWare's Custom Predator Case with 4 front USB2 ports -painted in any custom metallic paint shade you want! And it’s not including the matching painted mouse and keyboard -for a truly personal esthetic. Nor is the AlienCare 24/7, 1 year standard, Toll-Free Warranty included. What’s AlienWare’s price you ask? How about $2,493.00. That’s $252.05 more than the NewEgg comparable -for those of you keeping score at home. Again, that’s with the NEW custom painted case, mouse, keyboard, and 1 yr warranty. It includes free 15-21 day FedEx shipping and all taxes. Not to mention the freedom of mind that comes from buying a fully intergraded and tested gaming rig from a vendor. It all arrives at the same time, in the same box, and you the user can spend your valuable time working on your BF1942 strategies instead of hunched over your “parts” and listing to motherboard posting beeps. Now I'm not saying that you absolutely shouldn’t go out and build your own systems, of course not! Building a system is a great way to learn about the relationship each component has with each other and how they all contribute to the end result. Building a system in stages can also be very cost effective allowing u to add stuff when you’re ready. But if you want a killer rig NOW! Then building a bleeding edge system isn’t any cheaper than buying one from a vendor like Alienware. BEST. COMPUTER. EVER.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The beautiful alien head case is what caught my eye, but the features is what made me buy it. If money isn't a problem, by all means BUY THIS COMPUTER! The ATI Radeon 9800 Pro is an amazing card that will satisfy your needs and beyond for any game, including Unreal II. The Sound Audigy 2 sound card with the Logitech Z680 is an audio experience like you wouldn't believe. For those of you wondering how it works for simple Word tasks, it's overkill. Digital video editing, playing DVDs, and all other applications benefit from such power, but don't spend all your money on it if your not going to be doing some serious gaming. In short, this is the most cool looking and powerful computer you can buy if you are serious about your gaming.

There support lies

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have ordered an Alienware computer and have not received it yet(order over two months old). Each time I call they give me a different story. They have still not got my order right. I do not recommend this computer to anyone. If their support is anything like ordering and building the computer I will be in for a rough ride.

The Best Computer...EVER

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I currently have a Dell 8200. It's a great PC, don't get me wrong. But I can't play BF1942 or any other demnading games without screen lag. I researched everything and Alienware is the best bet. Sure the price is steep but totally worth it. I just ordered an Alienware Area51 Customize in Blue. I can't wait.

Lan parties they get toasted

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have gone to a few lan parties. The people with those systems get toasted to the one I have. I looked over what alienware had kinda built one like it, just leaving out some of the not needed items for me. Price wise I was over $1,000.00 in saving going my way. Most important thing to remember in building intel works best with intel products and there is a layout on the chip sets with what does what on any chip makers page: SIS, Intel, VIA, and Riven not just the processor but what allows the processor to run at x speeds with other items.

Nothing out of the ordinary

Pros:

Cons:

Review: A killer machine? No way! I can build a more powerfull machine (or have one built for me) for half the price. Support is bad, Features? What features?. The only nice thing is the case.

They "used-to-be-the-one"...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Ganna make this quick...Alienware, 2+ years ago used to be the overrall preferred choice, but now that they've gone "universal" (i.e., Best Buy), the qulaity and touch that used to be evident with the Alienware name has gone astray. Got money to spend and want a REAL beast... one word for you: VOODOO.COM!

BIY - Build it yourself!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Alineware seems to be suffering the same fateful path as Gateway. Years ago I was able to call up GW and specify virtually every component and get a killer system that was pretested and not much more cost than the sum of the parts. The latest one was a plastic trash case with not even the exact components. Look where THEY are now. Wonder why....

Nice case but...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The worst features for the price. What are we paying them for? Labor? I totaled the chasis and it doesn't amount to the huge price for absolutely nothing in features. Just go to their site to check it out, 2800 dollars for either an Intel or AMD based system, and nothing in features. What did CNET review for 3 grand? You can't get all that in their photo for 3 grand according to the alienware website. Where is this special package?

boutique PC's turned high priced Dell clones, Alienware's gone soft.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have gone through two Area 51's over the past sx years and as time has gone on, value has gone down. Dealing with their customer support and customer reps began as a headache and turned into a nightmare. When the sales rep doesn't know who the manufacturer of your computer's motherboard is, well, you know what I mean. Before Alienware went big business and started up a factory line a mile long, when all their machines were not cookie-cut "gamer machines", they used to make one nasty box with top notch options and components. If it wasn't on the parts list, they'd order it for you at cost, no sweat. No all you have to choose from is whoever they have a contract with and why bother when you can pick up an Alienware at Best Buy? In the end, if you want a truly high-end high performance rig, stay away from Alienware. They fake it and drop you like a brick after your credit card approves the purchase.
