"Innovative design, average computer for $2,300"
Pros: Pretty, Convenient form factor, Seamless Mac software
Cons: Weak graphics card holds back the line, mirror-glossy screen
Summary: The new iMac looks phenomenal. And that's very cool, but looks don't run software...
Intel/BootCamp has put Apple squarely against PC's for spec. There is no reason for anyone to spend $2,300 on a computer and be disappointed with the graphics card.
Most of you won't be disappointed, because you convince yourselves that you only need the level of spec that Apple sells, and you'll defend Apple for it, but try telling that to the software you want to run on it.
Yes, I would like to be able to run newer Windows games through BootCamp for the next 2-3 years and have my graphics card handle it. No, I don't think that's asking too much for $2,300.
You'll tell me that's not what this computer is for. That I'm asking too much. That I don't get the Mac line.
But I do get it. I've been Mac-only my whole life. I just think the iMac is needlessly praised when Apple is not innovating on the entire widget... they focus a bit too much on the gloss. And yes, it looks great.
I don't want to be forced into a $3k MacPro to get a spec that will hold for a while. Apple has done the same thing to the MacBook consumer line, weakening it so you need a MacBook Pro to get a competitive spec.
It's a great look, great screen size, great OS, but in the wider world, not a "great" machine.

I'm coming from a PC environment and it can take weeks to months to get past the glits and glam to discover that this just a plain old mac. that needs to innovate in certain areas.

I would go so far as to say, price gouging. I bought macs for my job, and have been very disappointed in not only the options you get for the price, but try and pay for a repair on one of these things. I had a $900 motherboard repair which was thankfully under warranty, but if it wasn't, why should a motherboard cost that much? And then on my macbook pro, thankfully I bought the extended warranty because they wanted to charge arounbd $450 for a DVD drive that lasted only a little over a year.
I don't know why this issue isn't being adressed more. -
I have to agree with this user's opinion about the graphics card. That being said, I was aware that the card was not all that it could be, but I knew that going in to the purchase. However, I am not a computer gamer. I do all my gaming on my consoles, therefore, this was a non issue for me. It would still be nice to see the iMacs get a decent video card like the mac pros.
