"Blown left speaker upon arrival. Otherwise nice"

by richardrudberg on August 1, 2009

Pros: Beautiful screen. Amazing attention to detail on the packaging. My pictures have never looked better

Cons: Arrive brand new with blown left side speaker. Delivered Thursday evening. Tried speakers for the first time on Friday. You can hear the left side speaker rattle from across the room.

Summary: First time Macintosh owner. Not a great first experience. This machine should never have passed product testing. I wonder what else they overlooked it they didn't bother to test the speakers.

It keeps getting better. Apple technical service (phone) send me to an Apple store to get my iMac speaker repaired at the "Genious Bar." Got there 20 minutes early for my appointment and waited 30 minutes for a "Genious" to help. He concluded that, yes, the speaker has a problem. He did not have any parts for the "new iMac" and advised returning home to call Apple customer service and request a return order so that the iMac can be replaced. The Genious gave me a telephone number and service order. The phone number was for some company other than Apple. I returned home (2 hour round trip) to discover that Apple technical service closed at 4pm. It was 3pm when I left the store. They could have mentioned this. Frustration is setting in. People were stacked up at the "Genious Bar" with failing iPhones and lap top hard drives. Is Apple growing faster than they can manage?

Sorry for the spelling errors earlier. Apple customer service networked me through several different departments this morning (Sun). Everyone has been pleasant and helpful thus far. Apple is working to coordinate a replacement.

New iMac has arrived and appears to be working perfectly. Had difficulty establishing shared file service with my server but Apple Technical service was very helpful in identifying my mistake.

Letter sent to Apple: I am new to Apple platforms and based on previous PC experiences had much reservation calling technical support. As such, I spent hours trying to get an iMac to recognize the files shared on my server. Darrell took the time to not only fix my problem but explain why I was having the trouble. Additionally, he aided me in configuring other PCs/servers on the rest of my network. I cannot thank you enough for the timely call response, friendly support and courteous agents. You are making an excellent second impression for Apple. Keep up the good work.
