  • "Mini has better value - energy payback 16 mo., resale++"
    4.5 stars
    on by mwarren_us

Pros: If you're like me and leave your computer on 24x7, then the energy savings alone will payback the difference in 16 months (11.4 cents/kWh) and after that the resale value will be much higher. Wifi and dual display further open the cost gap.

Cons: Most folks will need a display adapter, fortunately Apple selected a standard connector and low-cost online vendors like monoprice sells them for much lower prices. The HD could be larger.

Summary: The Mac Mini is a wonderful computer that packs a ton of functionality into a very compact space; my desk is once again a place to work instead of a parking garage for a huge metal box. Mac OS X is a joy to come home to after being shoehorned into Microsoft's products at work.

Also, the Mac Mini's small size makes resale nicer, as you have a relatively small shipping box to store and then bring out when you want to resell, with relatively low shipping cost.

Concerning the review that solrdr270 wrote. I am not sure if you are aware of this, but a couple of things. 1. mac's run on basically the same hardware that pc's do, so the hardware fail rate is going to be basically the same. I have used both mac's and pc's and I have had more problems with hardware failing on mac's than on pc's. 2nd, what you said about having to count in the price of anti-spyware etc. Granted, you do need them on a windows machine, but some of the best programs out there are the free ones, and 3rd, about windows crashing. I used to do video editing on mac's and I have used windows machines extensively as well, maybe it has just been a while since you have used windows, because it did used to lock up alot. But it has been a long time since it has for me.

I have to agree with mwarren here. Granted the harddrive could definetly be alot larger and there really is no reason why apple shouldnt of gone the extra mile. I myself did the math regarding the energy saving money. I too leave my mac on 24/7 so i can access it anywhere on my iphone 3g. I will indeed save hundreds of dollars in this alone. I also wont have to spend money fixing parts on this item as with the compared pc products over time. And when i am tired of my mac mini i can resell it at quite a reasonable amount of money versus a pc again in time making sure i TRUly got the best bang for my buck. Plus i dont have to spend money on anti spy this and that "programs". Why does cnet tend to forget that this is a must have purchase with pc products and do not consider them into cost. Anyway. One thing id like to add is i save time from the mac mini not crashing or locking up when it is mutlitasking or rendering. How much is that worth?!!!(mac mini still need larger harddrive hehe)
