Pros Small form factor, built in wireless, low power consumption

    Cons Performance

Summary Why are we benchmarking this machine against desktops? Why would you run Photoshop on a micro-machine like this?

This is meant as a simple DVR, basic HTPC, or movie playback device at best. You shouldn't expect it to run head-to-head with desktop PCs.

This review should be changes to compare the Eee to other machines in its segment, i.e. UMPCs, Mac Mini, Shuttle and other tiny computers.

  • "Great Little Machine"
    on by ryank82

Pros Small form factor, low power usage, wifi built in,

Cons None I can think of

Summary The Asus Eee Box is a very nice little desktop. You have to keep in mind what this pc is intended for. This is NOT for the graphic designer or hardcore video editor. This is really geared towards surfing the web, emailing, word processing etc. With that said I upgraded the memory 2GB and it has no problems playing 720p video and running multiple applications. Its almost silent during operations which is really nice. I leave mine on 24/7 . I installed Vista Ultimate on this and it runs great. For the price its a great machine.

Pros small, low energy use, quick load, stylish, inexpensive

    Cons nothing, yet

Summary the review is not comparing apples to oranges, the review is comparing apples to cows. Even a budget desktop or a netbook or inexpensive refurb desktop close to the same price range are not used for what the eee box is supposed to be for. Its small so it can be mounted to the back of your monitor, uses little energy, the quick load to the features most people use and would not take up any space on your desktop like the budget desktops would.

It doesn't have a monitor like the netbooks, however i'd rather use a larger desktop flat panel monitor that is more ergonomically sound than a laptop's monitor at home any day. I have a laptop for portability needs and plan on building a desktop for gaming.

Most of the time i'm on the net and the eee box is perfect for that purpose. I'll also save money on electricity and every penny adds up in the state our economy is in right now.

  • "Not a very good set of tests for this machine..."
    on by cocopuffz

Pros Silent & Small. Perfect form factor for the living or bedroom

Cons Low HP CPU may not be enough for more advanced tasks.

Summary First of all, let me preface this. I don't own one of these, but I'm looking for something in this form factor.

Why would anyone run Photoshop CS on an atom processor? The chip was developed for mobile devices. No one who can legally afford Photoshop CS would be "misguided" enough try it.

This is a supplementary machine. It's meant for simple tasks like web browsing, chatting, possibly SD media playback.

Ideally, I would install Myth(PVR)/Linux on it, connect a HDTV + wireless keyboard/mouse and watch Video Podcasts, online content, and surf.

I can see this machine taking off in the open source community if it came pre-installed with Myth or a lightweight linux distro.

The Dell Hybrid is the better alternative if you don't mind paying a few extra bills.

  • "Enery savings and Form Factor significant"
    on

Pros Energy savings for teaching at a school in Uganda. The area is solar powered and so every saving in wattage is significant. I can replace components like the keyboard, unlike a lap top. Love the ability to mount it on the back of a LCD momitor.

Cons The cover over the power on switch is cheaply made and can fall off.

Summary For my application of teaching students computer office skills and introducing them to computers in general, this box is great. I still consider the Eee box expensive for what you get, and would look forward to future price reductions. I think that a $199 US would go a long way in helping the un developed world to get a computer.
