The Dell Dimension 3000 is based on Intel's 865G chipset, which offers plenty of benefits, such as support for dual-channel, 400MHz DDR memory and Intel's Extreme Graphics 2 technology. But we were miffed to see that the motherboard does not provide an AGP slot for graphics card upgrades. (Although Extreme Graphics 2 is an improvement over Intel's previous integrated graphics chips, it still has limitations.) The same is true with the floppy-drive slot: unless you have Dell install one at the time of purchase, the slot comes blocked and is therefore useless to you. And there's no option for adding a handy media-card reader--a choice that all of eMachines' current models offer.
As we expected, the overall performance of our test system was unimpressive, but it also fell surprisingly short of the showing by the AMD Athlon-based eMachines T3256. And don't try to run any serious games on the Dimension 3000: its 13.5 frames-per-second (fps) frame rate on our Unreal test demonstrated a major liability in this department, while the eMachines scored closer to 30fps on the same test. Neither system is a good bet for playing the latest game titles, but the T3256's score indicates that it has a superior graphics subsystem in the Nvidia GeForce4 MX to that of the Dimension 3000's Intel Extreme Graphics 2.
The Dimension 3000's main attraction is the fact that it's highly configurable via Dell's Web site, while retail systems such as the eMachines T3256 ship as is. Our Dimension 3000 test system came with a 2.66GHz Celeron processor, 512MB of RAM, and DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives. You can, of course, configure it with a faster processor, including Pentium 4 chips, more memory, and higher-end optical drives. You'd do well to upgrade the tiny 40GB hard drive found on our test system, which provides a quarter of the capacity of the T3256's drive. For businesses looking for an inexpensive, no-frills PC, Dell's OptiPlex SX280 offers many of the same options in a much more compact case.
The Dimension 3000's design is tried-and-true, even if it's not particularly attractive--the trademark matte-black box with battleship-gray accents doesn't quite match the black-and-silver peripherals that come with it. A tool-free side panel slides open easily to reveal a roomy interior with two free PCI slots. Rear ports include four USB 2.0 connectors, while another USB 2.0 port and a headphone port adorn the front. The included Internet keyboard features the hardware volume wheel and audio buttons we've lauded in the past. Dual A215 stereo speakers provide basic sound, but Dell offers a number of options here, all the way up to a 5.1 surround-sound system for use with the optional SoundBlaster Live audio card (our test system relied on integrated sound, which provides 5.1 sound).
Dell offers a wide assortment of warranties. We suggest spending the $17 to upgrade from the weak, 90-day standard coverage to a one-year onsite warranty. (The $636 price of our test system included this upgrade.) Although competitor eMachines now offers two simple warranty upgrades, it just can't compete with Dell's many options, strong online support, and 24/7 toll-free phone support. And while our Windows XP Home system came with Dell JukeBox and Picture Studio (for playing music and fixing photos, respectively), along with the WordPerfect Office 12.0 suite, you can opt for several different flavors of more robust Microsoft productivity software.
In the end, the Dimension 3000's configuration options aren't enough to top the eMachines T3256' offerings. At roughly $600, the eMachines provides a better optical drive tandem, a larger hard drive, a graphics-upgrade path, and better performance--even if you do have to spend a little extra for a monitor. You simply get more for less with eMachines.

To measure application performance, CNET Labs uses BAPCo's SysMark 2004, an industry-standard benchmark. Using off-the-shelf applications, SysMark measures a desktop's performance using office-productivity applications (such as Microsoft Office and McAfee VirusScan) and Internet-content-creation applications (such as Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Dreamweaver).
| Unreal Tournament 2003 Flyby-Antalus 1,024x768 |
To measure 3D gaming performance, CNET Labs uses Epic Games' Unreal Tournament 2003, widely used as an industry-standard benchmark. We use Unreal to measure a desktop's performance with the DirectX 8.0 (DX8) interface at a 32-bit color depth and at a resolution of 1,024x768 and 1,600x1,200. Antialiasing and anisotropic filtering are disabled during our 1,024x768 tests and are set to 4X and 8X respectively during our 1,600x1,200 tests. At this color depth and these resolutions, Unreal provides an excellent means of comparing the performance of low-end to high-end graphics subsystems. We report the results of Unreal's Flyby-Antalus test in frames per second (fps).

It's cheap and it works
Pros: Comes with a low price tag. The speed is enough to get you to where you need to go. Doesn't use as much much, thanks to the Celeron energy efficiency.
Cons: It freezes quite frequently, slows down over time, and the multitasking is very limited.

Definately a great buy
Pros: Exandable, great for the average home user
Cons: I'm not just a home user, and the expansions become limited
I am 17 years old, with a minimum wage job, so obviously this can't cost a ton. I still have car insurance to pay for and with gas going up, I can't afford much.
I upgraded memory to 768, upgraded processor to 2.8GHz P4, got a PCI video card (GeForce 5500), added a 200 GB hdd to the previous (totalling 240GB of hdd space), added a DVD burner, added a PCI fan and wireless card, and I can say that this thing is screaming. For a total of about 600 dollars, I've made a machine that runs faster than the HP-built machine my parents bought for a grand. This says something about the expandability of this computer. Without expanding, the kids can play games and surf the net, you can do your word processing and all of that without issue. If you're like me though, and run 10+ apps at once, some doing things like 3d renders, you'll want to upgrade. Luckily with this machine, you can do just that with little hassle.
My complaints:
No second bracket for a second hard drive, needs to be ordered from a third-party company.
Bad processor slot, but it's built for Celeron so you can't complain much if you want to put a P4 3.2GHz with HT.
No AGP slot
Not enough wattage to run all my stuff, frequent crashes with the included 250W. Purchasing a 450W in 3 days however, and for only 20 dollars it's not a big loss.
Other than that, it's a great box. Definately worth the buy, but if you want to save some money, upgrade it yourself, don't use Dell's upgrade options.

Good with upgrades
Pros: Great Value
Cons: 90 Day Warranty
The beast has been up for over a year and I have had no problems (except for ocassional restart cos of windows updates).
I have bought/worked on several Dells (20 +)in the past, and all but one gave me reliable, cost effective service.
The best thing I like about dell's are that they are very easy to work with (for upgrades, service, etc...) unlike Compaq / HP which could be a PITA.

Good basic budget dsktop, not useful for more than productivity
Pros: Good basic system when it's working
Cons: If it breaks, good luck.
My Dell hasn't broken down once. I haven't tried to use if for anything complicated, but I have left it on for several days in a row pretty frequently and moved it two or three times, so I'd say that it stands up pretty well.
The 3000 is a cheap budget desktop for people who just want to do basic productivity & web. At the $400 I paid for it, it was a good deal; much above that and it's not worth it. Also, Dell's are cheap, and when they go bad they REALLY go bad, so make sure that you get a longer warranty than the 90-day standard.

My college pc = a small loud black box
Pros: uses NEC and Sony parts, small tower, and my old dell lasted forever
Cons: loud as heck, poor constrction, pathetic tech support
Pentium 4 HT 3.0GHz
512Mg DDRAM
DVD ROM
DVD R/RW + CD R/RW
Audigy 2 Sound Card
Intergrated Graphics
The box vibrated the first time i turned it on, sometimes whack it to make it stop. The variable fan will sometimes rev up at night for no reason at all, which keeps me from leaving it on at night. Now, the front fasod is vibrating sometimes too.
When the computer freezes (yay for windows) i often have to unplug the computer because the off button won't work, even after holding it awhile.
Don't buy any tech support warranty.
Their help is useless to anyone who knows what 'msconfig' is. I tried to get them to help me make an adhoc network between two dells for file swapping, and all they did was juggle me around 'Software' and 'Hardware' support for a few hours. I don't know who trains these ppl, but they should understand that hardware and software work together.
The one thing I can say that is geat about Dell, is that my old Pentium II computer is still going strong and if that is something important to you, give dell a try. Otherwise HP and maybe even the low-balling e-machines might have something better for you.

Contrary to popular belief it plays games!!!
Pros: lightning quick, decent integrated graphics chip
Cons: pack-in apps suck, no room for floppy
Great for multimedia use and word processing(I recommend the extra $50 bucks for MS Office.) I watch movies on it and listen to loads of music. It performs well with the upgraded 512MB of RAM and the 80GB HDD. I have the 2.39Ghz Intel Celeron processor. It is a very good budget PC and Christmas gift.
It isn't very bulky and MUCH easier to upgrade than the Dimension 2400. I have it in my room(a small storage room in my basement.) It has a 5 yr warranty AND the service isn't from a 3rd world country. Intel will do that to you but DELL hasn't done it to me... YET!
Overall, it is a very good PC for first-time buyers. And no, I am not a first time buyer. I have a 3.6Ghz Cybertron 360T with 1GB of RAM and dual 200GB HDD's. It is my work PC and I don't play games on it. I am studying animation in the local tech college.
Well, anyhoo, just buy this PC it's an excellent deal for the price($700-$1100, depending on the package)

Stable, great service
Pros: Works, good price, good service
Cons: Dell is sneaky with shipping prices
Our first two P4 Dell 3000s cost almost twice as much for the units and the delivery as the two we bought a month latter, so keep an eye on the Dell web site, specials come and go, and always watch these guys on shipping it ranges from free to $150 depending on the promotion running. Dell would not price match my machines even though the next special was less than 30 day from when I bought the first units. Something Best Buy would do for you if you bought locally.
The first two units came with defective shrouds of the CPU fans, very noisy. Dell phone support was annoying in that they made me do a bunch of steps (twice, one for each machine) when the defect was obviously a cheep plastic fitting. However after that, they sent on site repair out to fix it at no charge, very impressive!
No problems since. Units are good value and very stable even now six months later. I am a happy Dell customer and would not look again at E-machines, and the others.

Excellent with upgrades
Pros: Affordable, good warranty, customizable, performs well if upgraded.
Cons: not super upgradable after purchase, not exactly the ferrari of computers.
I had good experiences with Dell products in the past so I decided to remain loyal to a company that has treated me well. My computing needs are not very demanding, all I really use this computer for is surfing the web, work programs, digital photo editing, music, and word processing. I decided to upgrade the base model to a 'Pentium 4' 3.0Ghz processer w/ HT technology. I also upgraded RAM to 512mb and the hard drive to 80gb, simply because I do not want to buy another computer for awhile. I also got a free 19 inch flat panel screen.
My first impression is one of disbelief, this thing is FAST! To give you an idea, my previous computer was a .5ghz AMD computer running on windowsME, 128mb RAM, and pushing 5 to 6 years of age. The 3000 loads and runs AOL9 in no time at all, and even running more demanding programs like Windows Media Player 10 is lightning fast. My program for work (Unimatic/Apallo) took 3 minutes to load on the old computer, now it takes less than 10 seconds.
Dell's bundled software works fine and is a good supplement to the computer. I spent an extra 50 bucks to get MS office as a word processor because wordperfect is TERRIBLE and buggy. To my surprise, MS encarta 2005 came included for free and has been an excellent resource for my son's schoolwork.
The included monitor is as beautiful as it is large. This 19 inch beast is surprisingly clear for an analog flat panel monitor. The included keyboard and mouse work just fine. I wish I would have upgraded to the wireless keyboard and mouse, because the wires of the standard keyboard and mouse seem rather thick and noticable.
The 3000 also came with a printer, mine was a Dell 720 color printer. It works, pretty basic stuff. For 30 bucks more you can get a printer with a scanner, a good deal in my opinion.
As reviewers have said before, the graphics card cannot be upgraded. This is fine for me because I do not wish to upgrade it, I don't need the extra performance and I don't need it. If you want excellent 'videophile' graphics performance, DONT BUY A BASE MODEL LIKE THE 3000! It's that simple. I bought this model to do non-demanding, basic tasks, and the 3000 has performed extremely well in that respect.
All in all, the Dell Dimension 3000 suits my needs well. It is well upgradable by my standards, but would not satisfy those seeking a 'ferrari' computer. The product does exactly what it is made for: execution of relatively simple programs, at a cheap price. I urge people looking for a high performance computer to look at a "performance" models such as the XPS or the 4700, otherwise the 3000 is perfect. No lags, no freezes, no crashes. I would strongly reccomend the warranty, because you never know when a faulty part could set you back 1000 bucks on a new computer.
