"Best computer I've owned so far!"
Pros: My specs: P4 2.53ghz, 30 GB hard drive, 256 MB ram.
Small, fairly quiet for its age, tons of upgrade capability.Cons: Only takes up to a gig of ram, so upgrades a this point are highly limited.
Summary: This shipped to me from Dell in early 2003 and it is still going strong. I am running it on the original 30 gig hard drive and have never bothered with a reinstall of XP because the performance is still good. In actuality, everythng on the system is still in perfect working order, right down to the mouse and keyboard. Ok, the keyboard should be replaced, but that is it.
I upgraded the junk graphics card it came with to an ATI 9600 all in wonder which is about the best upgrade you can put on this machine without buying a new power supply and having issues. I also upgraded the ram and put in a second hard drive for storage. The case is compact and does not take up a lot of space and the front panel has USB ports and a headphone jack for convenience.
My previous computer was an HP and it blew out two hard drives in under two years. It was only about two years old and already dying when I bought the Dimension 4550. It was not a great computer. I was very hesitant to buy another HP until I got my laptop a few years ago and HP has upped its game. However, I would not reccommend an HP from this era of computers.
I would, however, highly reccommend thr Dell Dimension 4550 to anyone who is looking to buy a used computer under $300. You can upgrade your hard drives, ram, and graphics card for a minimal investment and get years of use for basic email, internet, and non-graphics or cpu intensive games.
PS Mine is being handed down as I just upgraded to a 730x. :)
