    "Buyer beware"

by greenrx on August 12, 2006

Pros: Good overall system when it works

Cons: Subject to crippling and annoying hardware failures

Summary: I know it's late in the game for a review, but Dell needs to be taken to task for this model. After a year and a half, my unit developed two separate problems where (a) the fan began to make loud and annoying noises (probably a faulty bearing), and (b) a much more serious problem with the power supply that prevented the unit from starting at all. After spending hours on Dell's hellacious phone tech support line, my problem was mis-diagnosed as a bad motherboard. I was induced to purchase a replacement mobo for around $150.00 including shipping. It turns out that the problem is actually with the power supply, and is a well known issue (to the point of being a virtual epidemic) on Dell's user forums. In short, Dell is well aware of the problem that many purchasers of this system are experiencing, and to my knowledge has done NOTHING about it. Their tech support and product support are an absolute scandal. I will never buy another Dell product again.

A fan is a cheap repair .. and a PS is a cheap and easily diagnosed DIY repair
A decent 300 watt PS on amzn is under $30.
I know, because my PS died in 08.

DELL support deserves 0-stars ; yes
This product was ahead of it's time. and deserves 4 stars.
Mine 3.0Ghz model still rocks with a few mods.
2.56GB mem; 500GB SATA HDD; 24xDVD/CD OPtiarc burner
Just did a fresh install of Win XP ... just like new PC...
    So, I upgraded my 19" CRT to a 26" 1920x1200 HD-LCD...
The Dim-4600 on-board graphics look great.. at 26" on HD.

it sounds like your experience with your 4600 was a fluke. i have talked to several 4600 owners and own one myself , and have had/heard nothing but good things. however dell needs to hire support staff that can speak english ! i talked to a guy who could "barely" speak english.. i think his name was mohamad jehad..lol i got mad and hung up on him

I am having the same issue with dell 4600. This one though the power supply is not the issue. It's the processor. But also as he said the tech support misdiagnosed it as a mobo. And I bought a new one from them for about 155.oo just to find out it wasn't the problem.Dell's spare parts department is a joke, they don't know a thing about computers. I was sent two different items by mistake. Thankfully this is not my pc. I doing this as a favor. Dell is a joke, I will never buy anything from them again.
