Dell's first foray into the luxury gaming-PC market with the Dimension XPS doesn't come as a great surprise. Enthusiasts inevitably want a host of customization options when configuring their dream system, which is a task that Dell is more than capable of handling, with its built-to-order business model. Also known for its customer support, Dell is making a significant investment in the new line by adding an XPS-specific support team. But despite its blazing performance and a top-notch features list--including Intel's new 3GHz Pentium 4 and 875P chipset, along with ATI's new Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card--the XPS lacks the craftsmanship exhibited on gaming systems built by boutique PC shops, such as Hypersonic. At more than $4,000, the XPS is priced closer to its competitors than we had expected, based on Dell's otherwise aggressively priced Dimension PCs. The XPS will certainly get the job done for gamers, just not with as much style as others in its class.

Blue and black plastic encase the XPS.
Dell trades in the staid, two-tone, gray Dimension tower for the big, black-and-blue case found on the Dimension XPS. Where other vendors of luxury boxes offer automotive paint jobs and internal fluorescent lighting, Dell's two nods to modern design on its Dimension XPS are a front-mounted, faux-brushed-aluminum plastic plate and a small flip door on the front panel that hides two USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire port, and a headphone jack. To keep up appearances, Dell has added a hinged panel that hides the optical drives. This adds up to a case that is slightly jazzier than the standard Dimension's, which Dell hopes will catch the eye of gamers. We're not completely sold on the case design--inside or out--after recently seeing comparably priced, custom-painted, painstakingly crafted systems from Hypersonic, but we do know that it's the largest desktop from Dell that we've seen in recent memory.

Indeed, there is plenty of space inside. At 19.5 by 8.5 by 19 inches (HWD), the interior can accommodate three 5.25-inch drives and three 3.5-inch drives. The power supply and two of the four system fans are contained in a closed unit upon which the rest of the system sits. This creates room in the case for the massive, green-plastic shroud used to help cool of the 3GHz Pentium 4 processor. As an added bonus, because the power supply is situated at the bottom portion of the system, the power cord dangles more manageably that if it were it positioned toward its traditional spot at the top of the box.

Behind a small door on the front panel there are USB 2.0, FireWire, and audio ports.
Green quick-release levers make removing or adding drives a snap--if you can get past the mess of wires.

The rest of the layout isn't so tidy. True, the expansion slots, the drive bays, the ribbon cables, and almost every other interior part you'd want to adjust or replace has tool-less pull tabs. It's just that you may need a machete to actually get at them. With seemingly little thought given to the placement of wires and cables, the clamshell opening mechanism makes matters worse by stretching out the connectors to the various drives from the motherboard and the power supply. Compared to other interiors we've seen, in some of which you could perform surgery, the Dimension XPS is an extremely cluttered case.

Three drives in two: a combo DVD-RW/CD-RW drive and a DVD-ROM drive.
Dell has yet to capture the nuance of design found in the custom-built systems from boutique shops, but the configuration of the Dimension XPS shows that the company retains its grasp on what's needed to build a powerful PC. Among the latest and greatest parts are the Intel 875P chipset, the 3GHz Pentium 4 processor, the 128MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card, and a pair of 120GB Seagate Barracuda Serial ATA hard drives in a RAID 0 configuration. The new 875P chipset, formerly code-named Canterwood, is perhaps the most significant inclusion; it features a number of built-in technologies that facilitate the system's overall fast performance. With support for DDR400 memory and a maximum frontside-bus speed of 800MHz, the 875P chipset can accommodate the next generation of Intel CPUs and speedy dual-channel 400MHz system memory. Native support for USB 2.0 and Serial ATA drives means faster access times for hard drives and peripherals, and a variation of the chipset will include built-in RAID support, although this particular unit used a Promise RAID controller PCI Card instead.

Other features include a combo DVD-RW/CD-RW drive (writes to DVD-R discs at 4X speed, writes to CD-Rs at 16X speed), a 16X DVD-ROM drive, a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card, and the outstanding Logitech Z-680 5.1-speaker set. The included Dell 1800FP 18-inch LCD display maintained a vivid image during general use, game playing, and DVD watching.

Bold and beautiful: Dell's 1800FP flat-panel display.
Rattle the walls with Logitech's Z680 speaker set.

Gamers will be disappointed to learn that Dell doesn't bundle any games with the system. You get a host of other apps, though, including Office XP Small Business, Quicken 2002, Roxio Easy CD Creator, Encyclopedia Brittanica 2003, and two Dell-branded media-editing apps: Dell Picture Studio and Dell Movie Studio.

Application performance
The Dimension XPS marks Dell's arrival in the high-end gaming PC market. Look inside its large case, and you'll see leading-edge PC technology, including dual Serial ATA hard drives, plus Intel's new 875P chipset and a 3GHz Pentium 4 processor. (This P4 differs from the 3.06GHz P4 introduced last fall in that it supports the faster 800MHz frontside bus of the new 875P chipset.) The result of this technology is outstanding application performance. The XPS, which is nearly identical to the Dimension 8300, eked out slightly better application scores, though both are more than capable of handling any of today's apps.

To measure application performance, CNET Labs uses BAPCo's SysMark2002, an industry-standard benchmark. Using off-the-shelf applications, SysMark measures a desktop's performance using office-productivity applications (such as Microsoft Office and McAfee VirusScan) and Internet-content-creation applications (such as Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Dreamweaver).

3D graphics and gaming performance
Like any gaming PC worth its weight right now, the Dell Dimension XPS uses ATI's leading Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card, and it turned in outstanding 3D-performance scores. When we first received the machine, Dell had enabled the vertical sync (v-sync) setting for OpenGL. This kept the frame rates on our Quake III benchmark--an OpenGL game--at an even 60 frames per second (fps) because it synchronizes the graphics card's refresh rate with that of the monitor, which in the case of an LCD is 60Hz. According to a Dell representative, the company "made the decision to enable v-sync on the Dimension 8300 and the XPS systems that utilize the 9800 or the 9800 Pro based on customer feedback. Disabling v-sync, while it allows for an increased frame rate, has a tendency to create tearing or screen artifacts on some games." At the last minute, perhaps wary of receiving seemingly low benchmarks on its first high-end gaming PC, Dell decided to disable the v-sync setting for the XPS. With v-sync turned off, the system turned in the ridiculously high frame rates that you'd expect from a system with a Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card. Though Dell decided to disable v-sync in the end, you can easily enable v-sync via the Display Properties window if you begin to notice screen artifacts.

To measure 3D graphics performance, CNET Labs uses Futuremark's 3DMark2001 Pro Second Edition, Build 330. We use 3DMark to measure a desktop's performance with the DirectX 8 (DX8) interface at both 16- and 32-bit color settings at a resolution of 1,024x768. A system that does not have DX8 hardware support will typically generate a lower score than one that has DX8 hardware support.

To measure 3D gaming performance, CNET Labs uses Quake III Arena. Although Quake III is an older game, it is still widely used as an industry-standard tool. Quake III does not require DX8 hardware support--as 3DMark2001 does--and is therefore an excellent means of comparing the performance of low- to high-end graphics subsystems. Quake III performance is reported in frames per second (fps).

Already known for its excellent technical support and documentation, Dell is well positioned to handle what are likely to be demanding support needs of customers who purchase XPS systems--these are the same customers who are likely to tweak the configuration via software or upgrades. To that end, the standard three-year parts-and-labor warranty with one year of included onsite service applies, and XPS customers will received a dedicated number for telephone tech support, staffed by technicians who have been trained specifically to give XPS help. And, as usual with Dell systems, in addition to the requisite operating system, component driver, and system restore CDs, a system-specific manual is also included.

New Dell Desktop Customer

Pros: Easy configuration choices. Ordered on Friday. Rcvd on Tuesday. This is the first time I purchased a computer. My previous 3 machines we hand built. This system was definitely a good buy so far. Only time will tell. For those with noise issues out

Cons: Big (and I mean BIG) case. It will not fit in my computer hutch. I guess I will need to buy a bigger computer hutch. I think they could have designed a better front cover area for the removable media area. The plastic seems a little flimsy for $2200.

Pros: X800XT card screams on all but BF-Vietnam (keep it on 1024-by). The 10K rpm drive is a must! It's made a huge difference in loading maps and levels. The case is BIG, but quite as a mouse. Love the Side Door for access.

Cons: No options to upgrade Optical drives to decent brands like Plextor, Sont, or Pioneer. Less than careful final assembly and feeble shipping carton.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just configured the XPS as a student, saving only 5%, for just over $3500, and that's with a 20.1" LCD monitor! 3GB Pentium 4, 1GB of RAM, the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card, 120GB Ultra ATA/100 hard drive, 16X DVD-ROM, 48/24/48 CD-R/RW, and a 4 year warranty with accidental damage coverage. I left out speakers and MS Office since what I have already will be used again. I also upgraded to XP Professional OS and added little extras like a 64MB USB memory key, 9 outlet surge protector and Detto Intellimover with USB cable. Given the nice new features on the XPS (front Firewire port and headphone jack), along with the seemingly well designed cooling fan setup and Dell's renowned support and extreme reliability in my past Dell systems, this one will be hard to pass up. Granted, this is probably not quite the "gaming" machine that Dell purports it to be, but most of us will be using our computers for working, surfing, and gaming. In my opinion this would seem to be one of,if not the best choice out there. If you're the type of person who wants to go with an Alienware, Falcon Northwest, or VoodooPC, then you're either into their hype or have the capabilities to build your own custom machine and don't need service or support. Try pricing one of their systems with a 20.1" LCD display for the same price. It's just not possible. I've bought Dell before, I'll buy Dell in the future, and I'm sticking with them.

Review: Yeah, yeah. I know you could build it better and cheaper yourself (I priced this out several times), but then, you could blow away any vendor with a do-it-yourself homebrew. But some of us don't have the time. One big plus here, I have to use my machine for work AND gaming (sucks doesn't it), so I get a machine that can handle both. Your price configurations seem ridiculous. I just bought an XPS with no monitor, 240 Gb Serial ATA Raid 0, ATI Radeon 9800 PRO, Modem, DVD-RW, and three years on-site support for 2700.00. Where does everyone get this 4000 price tag?

slightly cheaper alt. to alienware

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Of course, being dell, this system uses proprietory components and other practices so common to big oems, which makes this system not the fastest performer in the price-range. The cable clutter and heating issue (power supply at the bottom? these guys ought to pay attention in chemistry class) makes the case design slightly uninviting. But the purpose of this system isn't to satisfy the people who usually go for the boutique builders. It is simply a cheaper alternative, and it is a very good one at that.

That is a pentium4 3.0 ghz w/ 800 mhz FSB. I got 1024MB DDR SDRAM at 400 MHZ(also not generic). 200 GB Hard drive. It IS the same thing you would find in a 3-party company and not downgraded in any way.(keep in mind my hours of research) ok ok...also i list the rest: 128MB radeon 9800 19 in. CRT monitor 16x DVD-ROM Creativelabs Audigy 2 premium 48/24/48 Max CD-RW Keep in mind I bought it when there was some amazing FREE UPGRADES. now i want to share a review from Gamers Depot.com to concerning mainly its tower construction. here it is.... "Perhaps one of the most striking things inside the system is the obvious great strides Dell took to ensure that this system would not over-heat ? even under the most grueling tasks ? and be very quiet doing it. They use two 4-inch variable ?speed fans which alter their speeds based on the thermal needs of the CPU. They?re setup in a non-direct cooling mode, inside an airduct that funnels the hot air to them to exhaust out of the back of the computer. The amount of airflow using this design is far greater than any currently available active-cooling solution from third-party companies, and keeps the noise-levels down tremendously." "Lifting off the airduct reveals a CPU heat-pipe cooler and a rather ?stock-looking? Northbridge chipset heatsink. This is the first time we?ve ever seen a large OEM use heatpipe technology to cool a CPU." "Yet another decision they made was to use an externally-mounted 460-watt power supply which houses two fans, and actually resides underneath the case and goes the entire length of it as well. The advantage to this is that the power supply ? unlike more conventional methods ? doesn?t add any heat to the inside of the PC. Whereas the downside is that if it ever fails, you?ll have to go through Dell to get a new one ? sorry, no third-party makers here." "The case itself is also very proprietary with regards to the cooling system and the kind of motherboard you can slap in. It?s a ?clamshell? type case which means it opens up by splitting into two. While we find this kind of case allows for easier access to the ?guts?, it lends itself to sloppy wiring jobs because of how the cabling needs to be able to expand whenever the case is opened up. While I wouldn?t exactly call Dell?s cabling totally ?sloppy?, however, it completely pales in comparison to what we know the likes of Alienware ? let alone someone like VoodooPC or Falcon Northwest." "Of course all of these cooling features are there to help protect the hottest gaming-PC technology going. Inside we?re treated to the likes of Intel?s current top-dog CPU, the ?Canterwood? 3GHz P4 which features an 800MHz front side bus, 1GB of DDR400 memory, an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 and two Serial ATA Seagate 120GB ? 7200rpm hard drives striped in a RAID 0 configuration using a PCI Promise Controller." "Other storage devices are a floppy drive, a Lite-on 16X DVD drive and an NEC 2.4x DVD+RW drive which actually records DVD+R at 4x. No matter how you stack it, this box wreaks of performance." "Externally, the tower hides the drive-bays behind a swingable door, and also hides (behind a flap) a headphone jack, USB 2.0 port and a Firewire port. Our primary concern here is Dell?s choice in making the bay-door out of plastic ? the ?arms? which it mounts in are rather flimsy and we have little doubt that Dell will be getting quite a few calls in the future from people complaining how they?ve accidentally knocked it off." "One other area of concern is the inability to overclock or ?tweak? any of the CPU or memory speeds. If Dell seriously wants to compete in the performance PC arena, then they need to rethink their positioning on this product ? gamers want and NEED to be able to go in and tweak things to their liking." No. But you could save about $500 and build a more intuitively designed and higher quality parts. Pros:

Cons:

Review: See, what you Noobs don't understand is that when you take a P4 3.0 ghz processor with an 800mhz FSB and HT technology, and a Radeon 128mb 8500 Pro video card, both total state of the art, and put them in a case that has the word Dell on the outside, they're crap, barely acceptable crap suitable for maybe word processing and a spreadsheet or two, as long as it doesn't have real big numbers on it. But if you put those same components in a really expensive, shiny case with some elitist boutique name on it, they kick butt and are a true gamer's DREAM. Why, those components are SO much faster in those boutique cases that they suck hundred dollar bills out of your wallet before you even know they're gone. May29th order processed, It is now June 9th and I just cancelled my system, which was stuck in Phase 3 for more than 2 weeks. It hasnt even hit the production floor. I have called Alienware about the order status of my computer almost 17times in that time frame. First they told me that their shipment of 500 green cases were all damaged and I was forced to choose a diff. color. Bottom Line, Alienware wasted 2 and 1/2 weeks of my time with their non-sense. Thier Customer support should learn better english. I ordered a Dell XPS today and I am extremely confident that it will get to me in 10 DAYS. WHAT KIND OF COMPANY (ALIENWARE) CHARGES YOUR CREDIT CARD EVEN BEFORE STARTING TO BUILD YOUR COMPUTER?? Not sure about Film Guy's pricing - I got 3.0ghz, radeon 9800 pro, 200meg hdd, 1 gig memory, movie studio plus, no office professional, but I only paid $2,400. And Rich - your "upgrade" doesn't have an 800 mhz fsb, so no way it will keep up. Can u say OLD technology? This system rocks, hands down.

rip off system

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I turned an old xps 400 into a raging P4 system with 3.06 gz, p4 asus mobo, 1 gb rmbus memory, and everything more than this system. and it has a 550 watt antec power system. The system has 7 fans altogether, including 1 on case, 2 on power supply, 1 on mobo, one on cpu, one on ati video card. it stays very cool, and no problems at all. The classic beige cases blow these away imho. And the system case is no longer a proprietory case, it can accept any standard mobo's. Love the new system! Saved about 2K! Sorry dell, your new system cases are just too cumbersome and obstrusive looking. Clam type case, common

XPS Rockin' Digital Filmmaking!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Okay, everybody is focused on this machine as a gaming box, but I bought it primarily for digital filmmaking and LOVE IT. I also do a lot of gaming, so I covered both bases. I'm using my XPS with Adobe Premiere 6.0 & Photoshop 7, dual-monitor config. and I'm blown away. The DVD+R/RW combo drive was nice touch and I paid to upgrade the Roxio DVD/CD software to a VERY easy to learn & use program, but powerful enough to let me customize my DVDs. The price - I loaded it, 1024 RAM, 200gig HDD, DVD & DVD combo drives, Office Prof. & Money, Radeon 9800 Pro, Dual monitor adapt., etc, etc, only thing I didn't get was a monitor, since I had dual Sony 19" monitors already. Total was just over $3,600. Well worth very penny!!!

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: $4,000, where did that come from? Yes, of course you can build a better machine yourself but many of us are just too busy these days and are quite satified with the specs, quality, and price of the XPS. Those of you who seem so angry, I just can't help but wonder if you purchased a different gaming PC and came to realize that you stink at playing the games you are installing on these PCs. Direct some of the energy of your anger toward increasing your reflexes and maybe you will turn into a better "gamer" and not be so darn angry over something like a PC. Are your lives so dull that you could become so angry over a PC, that according to you, you are not purchasing anyway!!! I find that really suspicious.

Very thorough

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Although a little expensive, this is one awesome system that is capable of amazing speeds running all types of applications. All those statements about lacking the polish that other small companies give you is ridiculous. Why waste electricity on neon lighting inside your computer? Who cares.

I just purchased one recently, and all I can say is "WOW!".

Pros: The DELL Dimension XPS is a beautiful machine, especially with the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro video card and the new P4 3.0 GHz (800 FSB) processor. Too bad it was not blue all over... :) I got the 120GB Seagate SATA drive with it and today I received 2GB of RA

Cons: None I can find except it is big and heavy. Then again I didn't pay a total of $2500 for a piece of garbage.

Stick with iBuyPower

Pros:

Review: You can get the exact same thing and more from iBuyPower for less than half of the price of the XPS.

Poor quality, for gaming n00bs

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Power supply at bottom... LOL! Its the biggest joke I ever heard from dell. Interior, don't ask, so crappy. Stuffed with massive of cables. Talk about airflow, bad... Samsung optical drives, yuck. Only Sony and toshiba optical drives are good. Not because of speed, but because it can read cd with scratch on it. $4000 for this piece of junk. NT

for you "enthusiasts"

Pros:

Cons:

Review: dell caters to the mainstream market. this system is for mainstream gamers who want to spend more for dell's name and the reputation and reliability that comes w/ it. people don't buy dells for the highest performance. if you idiots were true enthusiasts, you wouldn't be recommending alienware or falcon or anything else. everyone knows if you want the fastest rig, you have to build your own. and one more thing... i don't even know why you're on here anyway. dell and cnet cater to mainstream home users and the business sector (people who make money rather than those who play games all day). go back to your tweak3d forum (or whatever you people use today) and argue about those 3 extra frames that your alienware has over the dell

Try it then try to complain

Excellent entry into gaming mkt

To those who dispute this Product's validity

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Ok here is the thing: What did Dell have to do to bring this product to market? Nothing (The exact same case is available for Precision Workstations), other than speccing slightly different hardware and painting it blue. Are they going to sell a lot of them? Sure, people buy Dells and they will keep doing so. Those who go to Dell's web site looking for the fastest stuff available will not be dissapointed. Is the XPS going to woo away those few who are obsessive tweakers who put neon in their cases and paint them colors that would make Warhol blush? Of course not. But then again those guys would not buy a dell at any rate. They'd rather sink their hard earned cash into something so hillariously appointed and overbuilt that the end product is essentially a big sign that says "I'm a basement-dwelling virgin. If I had a life, I'd never be wasting my time with this neogeekist idiocy." Well Dell sells more computers in a day than Alienware, Falcon, and those other guys do in a year. Like I said, bringing the XPS to market cost Dell nothing, and it will attract buyers that would never buy a boutique computers in the first place. Does Dell care about the few who think that the wiring harness should be made of NASA grade materials or the whole case should come in carbon fiber? No, and neither do most people, including me.

i hope your wrong...

Pros:

Review: i have an awful gateway that is almost 4 years old. When i saw the specs for the new dell i begged my dad to buy it and now he did... looks great to me and i don't understand why everyone complains about how the inside of the comp look. Who the F*** cares!!! so anyway i hope this comp can run all my games but i know it will be better than me P.O.S. Gateway that can't even run Starcraft.

Bah - avoid.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: There's no way I would buy this system. For one, it is way over priced. But more importantly, a gaming rig is all about quality, and that's something this system falls way short on. But I'm sure they'll sell them anyway to the not so savvy. For those of you looking for a real gaming rig, read about the high end and extreme gaming systems on sharkyextreme.com. They at least understand the importance of quality components.

eh....it'd s decent computer, but, no style

Pros:

Cons:

Review: so, dell makes a gamer's computer, most ppl know it's a joke, but that's ok. If someone were to give me either this dell xps or a falcon nw talon, i'd take this, in the end, they're parts, it doesn't make that much difference, true dell might put in cas 2.5 ddr400 instead of cas 2.0, but it's dell, it's a large oem, it's expected. most ppl who want to buy a gaming rig don't even consider dell, they go for the gaming oems, voodoo, falcon, alienware (ugh...). etc. or they build it themselves and show just how macho they are. haha. look, it's an effort, if you don't like it, don't buy it, and oh yea, if you want to get technical about, at least get it right, this no patience for newbies, all i can say is RETARD

Build Your Own

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If your into computing enough to spend $4500 on a system, why not build your own? Then you can purchase the motherboard with the futures and performance you want, choose your brand of hard-drive, etc, etc, etc. In the end it may cost you more, but you get exactly what you want.

User Rating: 2/10

Know your limit dell

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Stay at the mom and dad desktop level, not because it carries a P4c 3.0GHz, an ATI 9800 Pro that it's gaming machine. I'm a gamer and the essence in gaming machines is not just a few parts, it's all parts "Motherboard, power supply, RAM, High cache and speed HD and Hi speed fan etc. I'm a tekki and I deal with 250+ Dell @ work, and let me tell you, you powerful only there.

User Rating: 1/10

Of course there's a difference

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Dell isn't buying top flight cards or mainboards for their systems, they never have. Not all 9800 Pros are the same, niether is RAM, or hard drives or anything. They all contribute to the performance level of a gamer. I'll trade for low latency DDR400 over high latency DDR333 any day, if you don't understand these terms, then Dell has a system for you in the XPS, those of us that do understand superior case design and cooling patternes insice a high performance system know this thing won't cut it. Marketing tripe, Dell is half heartedly trying to recoupe some of the high end - high margine business they have lost over the years to specialty builders like Alienware or Falcon. Hey Dell (and CNet) want to see how a case should be designed, visit Thermaltake or Lian Li's websites, there's some real cases, not this plastic imposter form Dell.

User Rating: 1/10

Don't think so

Pros:

Cons:

Review: All things being equal (which in this case they are not) the fact that Dell didn't use a quality performance mainboard, but choice to use yet another one of their proprietory board/case layouts should drive any serious gamer away. Worse yet, the performance is horrid compared to the other test machines. The Dell barely eaked out a win in the benches with TWICE the RAM. For the serious gamer there really isn't any substitute for quality workmanship and parts, just look at the wiring, no number of fans is going to cool that case, it is a giant dust & grime collector, and no all components aren't created equally. A Gainward card with better RAM is faster than a Albatron, even when both are using the same GPU. The cooler (temperature) PC with inevitably run faster and last longer. I agree with what the vast majority of folks are saying here, pass on Dell, build your own or buy from a real performance builder. The XPS is just an imposter wanna-be.

User Rating: 4/10

The performance test is flawed

Pros:

Cons:

Review: OK, so the Dell performs better than the others when it has twice the memory. What's your point? I should hope so. Hey, to all you saying this isn't a game machine: Why not? I find it interesting that half say they've spec'd out an exact dup on Alienware and the other half say it's not a good game system. I'm no fan of Dell but it seems to me that if it specs the same as alienware it's a stretch to say it's not a game machine. A gig of RAM, a P4 3.0, and Radeon 9000 sounds like a good system to me. What's different, the motherboard performance? Anyone have any numbers on that?

Gamer system in a workstation chassis

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I'm surprised the reviewer didn't note where Dell got the XPS Chassis - it's the same design they use for their Precision workstations (they high-end ones, at least). As one of those workstation users I can say that they're reliable, and they offer lots of room inside for making changes. At the same time the cable routing and wires are a pain. They're also heavy - not what I'd really want to carry to a party.

User Rating: 1/10

HAHA....DUDE, u got jipped

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Haha...all the execs in Dell must have been smoking something funky with the DELL dude - Steve. Dell so far has been only known as bargain computer and they proud themselves as selling direct to lower the cost. If they sell this gaming machine for not much difference than Alienware or Voodoo, where is all the saving goes to? Anyone pass the bong...??

User Rating: 7/10

Everybody STOP the HATE and start giving some serious comments!!!!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I configured one of those XPS (P4 3Ghz, 1024 DDR memory, DVD/RW, ATI 9800 pro, no monitor & no speakers) and it cost $ 2873.00. About $ 300.00 less then an Hipersonic (similarly cofigurated) which cost $ 3144.00, but $ 200.00 more expensive then an Alienware at $ 2672.00. I will not even consider Falcon and Voodoo that are on a different price range. I have to say, there was virtually no difference in the components between Alienware and Dell beside the price being $ 200.00 lower for the Alienware which it also gives you a video perfomance optimizer to overclock the system. The one that impressed me the most was the Hipersonic, that for almost $ 300.00 more then the Dell and 500.00 more then the Alienware, it gives you better component, such as faster memory (PC3200 DDR Corsair XMS LL Platinum Series w/ Heat Spreader) the best DVD/RW on the market (Sony DRU500A 4X DVD-R/RW & 24X10X32 CD-R/W) and tons of cooling systems and 3D optimizers. So in the end, if you want to save go Alienware if you want better for $ 500.00 more you get the Hipersonic. As far as Dell it's a good & fast Gaming System, at least as good as Alienware, but it cost too much for a Dell, not a good value yet, maybe at less then $ 2500.00 (no monitor , no speakers) is a good enough deal. That's all folks!!!!!!!

NOT $4400

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Configure it yourself. It comes out at a nice $2,100 and will eat Voodoo and Alienware for lunch. And why upgrade when you can buy a new one every 2 years; it'll run cheaper that way.

User Rating: 1/10

No way, no how

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I work in a Dell house, but when I go home I use 1 spec built rig from Alienware (which cost $200 less spec out the same), and two others I've personally built. It's a poser, for posers like the marketing geeks that must have come up with it. Mr "2 WOW posts" (hey did he count as 2 votes?) is the typical pretender that will by this rig, one that has no clue, and needs spellchecker and grammer lessons.

An Identically speced Voodoo costs $10 less if painted, $200 less if the case is "nude"

Pros:

Cons:

Review: my god, what a RIPOFF. having dealt with dell precision workstations all day everyday at school for graphics, you couldn't GIVE me this machine. They are buggy, slow and a total pain to upgrade. Take a look at the internal picture if you don't believe me! Now, go take a look at the internal pictures for Voodoo(www.voodoopc.com) or Alienware(www.alienware.com) and you will see what a REAL machine looks like. With both the XPS and a Vodoo FURY configured with: 3ghz p4 1 gig ddr-400 120 gig HD Audigy 2 ati radeon 9800 PRO 16x dvd, 48x cd-rw 3 year warranty the dell comes to $2997 the voodoo comes to $2700 unpainted, or $2993 painted in tifosi red.......

Proprietory Junk

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This things a joke, Marketing morons who have never run a map of Quake put this together, and I can't believe you recomend it. The design layout is horrible, cluttered interior, a PSU at the BOTTOM! My god, they must of missed the class about heat rising huh? And what's this running benches withthe Dell having twice the RAM than the others? Your data is as fataly flawed as the XPS. Anyone who buys one of these over an Alienware or Falcon-Northwest deserves to get fragged in a match. With $4K I can build 2 gamers that cool better, run faster and look imeasurably better. Oh yeah, your vaunted user poll is flawed also, you let the same guy vote twice in favor of the XPS.

Dell XPS All show no Go

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Its amazing what Marketing is doing to us ( the end Users) i mean come on ? are you really serious ? If anyone really wanted to buy a True Gaming PC would you look at DELL or Alienware and the Others who have been doing this for how long now ? Lets face it, Alienware, Falcon , ( and the rest) is,was , and has always been geared for Gamers. They know what we gamers want and how to build a true gaming PC for the Best Bang of your hard earned money . Dell on the other hand is anything but a Company that knows what gamers want, let alone how to build a true Gaming PC. Can you say Proprietory ? try and change something on your XPS like the Power Suppy or Motherboard and see what happens. Besides since when did anyone begin to consider DELL for gaming ?? Marketing, all Marketing i tell you . Save your money and get a PC from one of the rep PC guys that have been doing it for years , you'll be happy you did . Hey ? what ever happend to that DUDE guy ? lol

Why choose a Dell for gaming???

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Dell machines and their proprietary hardware is rubbish. Sure it has nice specs, and such, but is it upgradable? Also, IMHO Dell's quality of service to home customers has been dropping latly (leaving my extremly dissapointed, especially with my laptop purchase) so I wouldn't use service as much of an arguement. In the end, its probably something to trick those who don't know athing about gaming (but have a lot of cash) into getting this rubbish...

Cluttered Interior

Pros:

Cons:

Review: When Dell enters the Gaming Market to compete with the rest of the Gaming PCs Companies, they did not take finish their research. They have the right components and a great cooling system, but they still don't know a clean interior from a messy clutter interior. The cooling system is not going to perform well if all the wires and cabling are blocking the airflow.

Don't think your getting support.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Dell support is awful from every angle. There are thousands learning this the hard way. Don't get suckered.

User Rating: 7/10

Does your box have this kind of support??

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Wait a second, people are complaining because Dell finally sells a machine that doesn't cost hundreds less than everything else out there, AND still has support far beyond any other company for the last 15 years??? Whereas some companies make you send the system back when it breaks and then you have to wait for them to fix it and return it, Dell will get a tech to your door the next day. How much is a delta of 2+ days gaming worth to you?

User Rating: 1/10

Check it out, xps gone bad. $19.99+s/h

Pros:

Cons:

Review: if this was a real combat situation I would have shot this machine myself, "oops friendly fire." I wouldn't even consider this machine when I'm on the 5 yard line. Heck, I rather play badminton with the female squad at a retirement home then spend time with this system.

I like Dell but...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been waiting for the big guys to come out with a PC using the 875P chipset and the new P4 3.0 cpu. I was really thinking I'd go with a DELL because I like their boxes, I don't 'mod' anything and they have seemed to work well for me in the past. However, when I saw the XPS and configured it conservatively and noticed that the price for it versus a Gateway or Alienware was around $300-$500 dollars MORE -- I couldn't believe it. So, I'll be building my own or buying Alienware or one of the other custom guys. Sorry Dell ... pricing is just too steep for what you give on this one.

User Rating: 2/10

Do they think we're stupid?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Dell Meeting: We'll tell a cool story about our cooling system, paint the front bezel blue, then we'll raise the price because people are stupid and everybody already thinks we're the best priced PC out there. Then after all of that we'll call it a gaming PC. Who are they kidding? This is not a gaming machine it's a wanna-be. I find the XPS to be an insult to the gaming market and to gamers as a whole. Dell may know how to sell mom and dad with $699.00 commercials but they surely didn't sell me with this.

User Rating: 4/10

old dog, old tricks

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Still smells like Dell, proprietary and not quite enough. Looks to me like Dell decided to enter the gamer market because of some half-baked market research that said we would go for it if it were cheaper. The joke(on us) is that the XPS is actually MORE expensive than a comparably equipped Alienware. So, we get less options, less upgradeability, less colors, less visual appeal, less personal support, and less performance for more cash. Cool.
