    "A solid gaming machine"

    by jg1981 on March 7, 2006

Pros: Has dual PCI-Express X16 slots. Can use Pentium 955 EE or Pentium 4 670.

Cons: Dell doesn't have an AMD option

Summary: From my experience, over the past three months that I've owned my XPS 600 I've never been happier. It plays FEAR and other games I have at maximum settings and high frame rates without slowing down at all. I don't understand why there are so many people leaving negative reviews for this machine. I can understand if someone had a terrible experience with a defective unit. In that case, that person should definitely send it back within the 20 days that you're allowed to exchange for a brand new computer. If someone has issues with the bloatware, then that person should just reformat the hard drive and install all the stuff that they want to have installed on their hard drive. If any other problem arises, then that person should go to the Dell support forums. It's that simple.

The customizability and options that Dell gives you from their website are very nice. You can start off with a basic set up at around $1699, and that price already includes a monitor. How can you go wrong with that? You can have processors as high as the Pentium D 955 EE or Pentium 4 670 installed in them. They're also very easy to upgrade. I originally had a Pentium D 830 in my XPS 600 and I eventually upgraded it to the Pentium D 950. I also upgraded my Nvidia Geforce 6800 card to dual SLI eVGA 7800 GTX cards. The case requires no screws or tools to install new hardware, which is a very helpful feature.

Yes it's not an AMD machine, but it's still a solid Intel gaming machine. I'm also into MP3 and video encoding, and I'm very happy with the performance of my XPS 600 when it carries out those tasks. From what I?ve learned, Intel processors are really good at MP3 and video encoding. They are better than most AMD processors at those tasks according to benchmarks and reviews on the web.

Dell makes a quality machine with a good price in its XPS 600. I would definitely pick another Dell in the future if the next generation of XPS machines is even better or I'll probably make my own computer. In general, I think that Dell makes better machines than Compaq, HP, or E-machines. I think it deserves a rating of 9.
