"I had to replace the CPU fan."
Pros: I couldn't assemble a computer for less.
Cons: I would like to have the distribution disks for the operating system and other software instead of having it on the hard drive.
Summary: The computer made a loud noise on startup which subsided into a clicking sound as the computer ran.
I replaced the CPU fan and the computer became silent and I was much happier with the computer.

I did a reinstall of the software, with backup, from the hard disk. The eMachines setup program worked flawlessly; I didn't have to enter Microsoft's long key.
Then I had a problem. The system locked me out of the backup data. I couldn't enter the password that they wanted. The fix was to boot in 'safe' mode, logon to the 'owner' account, and take ownership of the backup data.
First I tried to change the 'sharing' property, and the system helpfully told me to change the 'ownership' property.
I got access to my data.
