Bought a GM835 used and I love it!

Pros: Works flawlessly, built in recovery DVD, and built like a tank. I picked mine up off of CL for a ridiculous $200 with 17" LCD. I've had it for a year now, and it is considerably more substantial than most Dells I've owned. I love this PC.

Cons: Don't like all the Crapware it comes loaded with. The PC itself is very heavy and could have more USB ports. Gateways online support (drivers and other downloads) is not as easily navigated as Dell's, but I still found everything I needed.

Review: I'm certainly not going to bash this PC for the OS's short comings. I've had no issues with the hard drive or motherboard. It functions well and does what I want it to do. Yes I got a great buy on this unit, but I wouldn't hesittate to get another at substantially more money. It's not just Gateways support that is subpar, I refuse to call virtually all customer support (not just PC manufacturers), because I don't speak Hindi.

Stay away from Gateway and this machine.

Pros: It's black and gray.

Cons: It blue screens constantly and is therefore worthless.

Review: I have sent he PC back 3 times for the BSOD. First, they blamed it on me for software that I installed. Over the course of 3 times back to the factory, they replaced the hard drive, all the RAM and now the modem. I have demanded my money back and can't even get past a low level "phone tech". Gateway is the worst company I have ever dealt with and the PC I got from them is a $1000 paperweight. I encourage everyone to stay away from Gateway products. Their customer service is the worst that I have ever experienced from any company period. I got taken, lesson learned.

Avoid Gateway anything, especially this one

Pros: Power packed

Cons: Non expandable

Review: Gateway seems to have still not learned its costly lesson in using proprietary motherboards and cases. At first glance, this system seems excellent-- until one relizes that due to Gateway-only drilled CPU mounts, it is virtually impossible to add a third-party cooling system (which is really needed in this heat-producing puppy). Due to a bad case design, it's also impossible to add a standard high-level graphics card.

This is aside from the fact that both DVD drives gave out within the first 6 months of operation. That's another Gateway flaw-- using cheap parts.

I knew none of these issues when buying the system and was told by a salesman that Gateway no longer uses proprietary products. Which is a good reason imho to avoid the brand entirely.

Great System- real fast!

Pros: good system with lots of options and speed + 250 gig HD

Cons: support not the best

Review: I've had my 835GM for about 5 months and I haven't had any significant probs- nice system with plenty of speed for games or other media- and a huge HD

Happy so far - but rapidly becoming unavailable?

Pros: Really expandable!

Cons: Too many sticky labels!

Review: Perhaps new models coming soon? The 8 is tentative, seems to fit somewhere between 7 and 9 as described in the ratings guide. I've had no trouble with mine but I've only had it for a couple of days, replacing an older (dying/dead) 1 gig Celeron machine. Noticeably much, much faster with my photo related programs. (Haven't explored the full range of installed programs yet so can't comment on "age" - and I'll likely add/remove to my own preferences anyways regardless. Would really rather not have all of the promotional or sample date limited programs - I suppose that if I use the restore function from the segregated partition or self-made restore disk, I'll have to re-remove/replace many of them again. I think it's indicative of the available drive space and too many handshakes with software vendors and not needed on something not so entry level - and not a Gateway exclusive either!

XP loads up (and drags in the expected tons of updates) fine. I was concerned initially about installing Eset anti-virus with all the other security programs but deleted NAV and loaded Eset before going on-line and have had no trouble. Haven't had any trouble with the seemingly redundant promotional security programs beyond warnings that they are out of date or not activated, etc.

Compared to some of the other similarly priced store boxes out there, this is quite flexible. Many of them have no slots available and maybe one bay available. This has multiple bays and slots available, including 1 free PCI Express x16, 1 free PCI Express x1, and 1 free PCI. Could probably easily free up the slot with the modem and remove the DVD-Rom if needed. Inside it looks "cleaner" and less crowded than some of the competition with wire bundles looking more flexible and less congested.

Haven't used external accessories from other system yet as this one has the burner, card reader, etc., already installed.
Updated
The USB socket is USB2 but the CF slot at least is very slow, so I've gone using a USB2 reader. A partially full 1 gig card reported it would take 7 minutes in the slot, in the external reader.
Updated
35 seconds.

Great box but bugs and support are poor!

Pros: fast, full featured, cheap

Cons: slightly noisy when at moderate load, firewire/IDE bugs- poor support

Review: Great machine- fast- well built- BUT loses my 2 Lacie firewire drives all the time (never did on my ancient BX chipset with Adapted USB 2/Firewire PCI card)and comes with only 1 channel of IDE and if you try to use a PCI based IDE card machine won't boot. You have to disable the on board IDE or disconnect all drives from IDE card- Gatewy simply stated card was not included so they won't help. Terrible attitude. PCI based IDE card has worked for years on my old system and many users will need to use IDE based hard drives with their new machines- yet Gateway only provides 1 channel which is used by the 2 optical drives- and then refuses to support. It is obviously a BIOS issue or driver issue- really frustrating that they handle it so poorly. I dealt with them on an old server issue and they were simply outstanding- but in this case I am considering returning the machine and buying a different brand.
Updated
I moved the IDE card to another slot and it solved the problem- but Gateway did not suggest this option. As for the firewire issue- they ended support by saying I should do an OS re-installation- ugh.
Updated
The bios are locked and OEM certified RAM is 2x as expensive- lame- also did not come with a remote and it also does not have a hard drive indicator light.
