Pros Was going to build a PC for around $1100-1300 and found this nice peace of work for under $500 after tax and did everything I needed it to do, so worth the money. HDMI hook up to my 32in HDTV is awesome. Tons of RAM,CPU power, audio, and exp. bays.
Cons Can't complain for the quality/feature ratio. The integrated GPU isn't hard core but it handled HDMI stream to my 32in HDTV. Keyboard looked cheap but actually turned out to be decent w/lots of WIN7 hot keys. No, I can't complain about this computer.
Summary I am extremely happy with this purchase. Got for under $500 after tax. Was pretty much set on building a new computer for around $1100-1300 and just happened to find this computer that just had to much in it to for the great price. I thought about the PC I was going to build vs this computer and after several months of pre-planed analysis; I ditched the build and bought this bad boy. The only thing that was standing out to me was the integrated GPU. I knew I would be putting something in it to replace that, even though it worked just fine for almost everything I through at it. I did end up buying a NVIDIA GT240 1G as it had the best cost/processing power/low wattage use I could find. Didn't have to change power supply either because of the GPUs low wattage. Cost about $80, but for that you get a PC that can handle whatever. After adding the GPU with the recent driver, the Windows 7 experience index was: Processor 6.9 - RAM 7.0 - Graphics 6.7 - Gaming Graphics 6.7 - and the lower point Primary Hard Disk at 5.9. Those aren't to bad of numbers considering the amount of features with the quality of Gateway/Acer name. Wouldn't dare touch an HP for nothing. I don't invest in planned obsolescence products from greedy Corporations. I have had this PC for almost a year and it's fantastic. The last computer I bought was back in 2002. That right. Had the good ole XP with 80GB of memory and with little hardware updates after about 5-6 years, but it never failed. So when I buy something I intend on getting years out of it and I know this PC will do the same. I may end up building the PC I was planning on building before and give this one to my Parents so they will have a nice PC and I will have a little more juice since I can pick and part each and every component, but that will be way down the road. Maybe when USB 3.0 and SATA 3 are more present, along with SSD's that come down in price. The i3 processor is really fast also. It acts as a quad core but is actually only 2 cores (hyper thread technology). If you wanted to replace the processor, it would be easy to do as it's chip set is upgradeable, but I don't see anyone needing to unless you are needing all of that processing power for applications that demand it.
Pros It's a heck of a powerful computer with a 1TB hard drive and 6 GB RAM. I love the memory card interface on the top edge, much better than fumbling around trying to find the correct slot. Plus it has 10 USB ports.
Cons Only has one CD/DVD drive. Keyboard that comes with it is sort of odd, it reminds me of a big calculator.
Summary After my 5 year old HP crashed I had to replace it rather quickly since I use my computer everyday for work. I over-research everything I buy and did the same when I bought this computer. I was skeptical about buying a Gateway over say a Dell or HP because I had one a few years ago that wasn't all that great, but I decided to take a chance because this is a powerful computer for the money and I'm happy with my decision. There are a few things I wish it had such as another optical drive but my old PC had 2 drives and I hardley ever used them since I ave an ipod and don't burn many cd's anymore. The only other thing, and its not really a big deal is the keyboard. It is strange, but after using it for a week or so now, it does the job just fine. Overall, if you have this computer on your list, I say go for it, you won't be disappointed!!!
Pros It was a great deal. Lots of bang for the buck and I was really pleased with my purchase until....
Cons System is incompatible with a recent windows 7 update.
Company says it is not their problem as it is a software issue. Sent me to a third party who charges $150 for a one time visit to look it over.
Thus, I have a bum computer 3months after purchase.
Summary I saw this review back in March and it totally sealed the deal on my new budget. Everything was wonderful, a great machine, until...
A recent windows 7 update made the computer run really slow... so slow it took 3min to open the start menu. Did a clean re-install back to factory condition... everything was back to normal, worked great. I decided to not install any software, just let windows do it's thing. After the third restart for "important" updates, it was once again running super slow. So this is not a virus or a third party software issue... the computer itself is incompatible with some new addition to windows 7 premium home addition (the supplied operating system that comes on the computer).
Due to the fact that the clean-reinstall made the computer work normally again, the company "Gateway" says it is not their problem and the warranty does not apply. They referred me to a third party computer fix place which wanted to charge $150 to just come and look at the computer. So, for a mere 1/3 the cost of the computer, I can have someone come out to my house and tell me the hardware is incompatible with the operating system software.
My fix, I plan to do another clean reinstall and just turn off windows update.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPUTER... but maybe your experience will be different.
Pros Solid build on this unit. have run three 24/7 with no hiccups at all. I3 is a wilnner, unit runs super silent. Very cool running at 85 deg F at idle(75 deg ambient). Very EZ to put in a moderate Graphics card if you need it.
Plenty of ports for all
Cons Weak 300 watt power supply. If you upgarde the graphics card(like some of us feel we just have to do) its a must to put in a higher watt power supply. It runs great mut mods will need more power
Summary As above I have experienced no problems with these units at all. I do a internal connection check before I virgin start any new computer with SATA connections- the will come loose durng shipping from time to time.
First- remove all unneeded bloatware and free trial offers- don't try to "upgrade in situ" your just asking for compatibility problems. Second- use bona fide retail programs. I make a nice pile of cash fixing hacked up computers with FAU torrent product or generated keys. Third- MAKE THE DANG RESTORE DISCS. again if you don't I bill for the repair. Fourth- run all windows updated immediately and before installing your own software.
Fifth- remember that Windows 7 64 bit will not be compatible with many of the older programs and you may need to upgrade those items also.
A little mention that this is a real nice mid cost range unit for most folks. It is not a hard core gamer and cannot be expected to be. Its a current tech machine that blows P-4's away and remains a great choice for the above average user with minimum geek factor. Since it runs nearly dead silent its not going to bug you while using it either.
Pros Easy to set it up and a lot of bang for the buck
Cons No Wireless internet straight out of the box
Summary I would recommend this computer for anyone looking for a new computer with good all-around features.
