"Your review is just wrong." on by kalkoala
Pros: Powerful - it is the only computer I found at the retail level that hit the maximum 5.9 on the Windows Experience Score Scale. For your reference the $3,000 Blackbird only got a 5.6. Really well built and cuts through apps like hot knife thru butter
Cons: Runs hot. Almost too hot. I think it did crash on me once because of the heat. Maybe should have used DDR3 RAM.
Summary: Your review is completely wrong. I went to store looking to buy a HP or a Dell but I am so glad I was talked into buying this one. Your review criticizes the rig for going overboard on the RAM. So what? Someday I might use all that RAM and it's good to know its there. Your review also states this computer is not a good value - horse pucky. I don't know how Gateway / Acer makes any money giving so much away but selling it for so cheap. At first I didn't like the looks either but it has grown on me. And anyways I bought a nice monitor and thats what needs to look good, not the tower that goes on the floor anyways. Good Job Gateway. "Very impressive - particularly considering the cost" on by HowardFox
Pros: Bought yesterday, setup was quick and easy. Immediately tested with 3DMark - scored 12,600+, besting average for this class of machine by fairly good margin including our custom built $2,000+ machine.
Cons: Mediocre case - looks nice but interior nothing special. Very little stock cooling but seems to run reasonably cool nonetheless. No overclocking possible with current BIOS.
Summary: BIG bang for the buck. Would be very difficult to purchase and hand-build the same machine with like components for even 50 percent more. Find a good price on another 9800GT, SLI it, and you'd have a truly 'screaming' value. (Although the somewhat anemic 400-watt PS might need an upgrade as well) Throw an Aquagate and another good case fan on it and forget about overheating - and you'll still have both arms and legs. If reliability doesn't become an issue down the road, this should prove to be a really smart purchase for anyone looking for a VERY reasonably priced but great performing gaming machine.
See the reply to myself. Thanks!

"Excellent machine for all purposes. Beware the Monitor" on by oldbear60
Pros: Quiet, fast and comes ready to go. Good value for price and ahead of the RAM game for gaming and pictures
Cons: The video card could be more current and the monitor hook up limits you to VGA on most Gateway monitors
Summary: this is my 4th gateway and to date I'm not disappointed. Have and do use Dell and HP and this is a better machine for any comprable configuration.

"You gave it a 6 for what?" on by Shadow150
Pros: Great Value, Great Components
Cons: Rather flashy case
Summary: I simply don't understand why Cnet would rate this computer so low simply for the reason that they include 6 Gigs of ram. When you look at other computers in this price range, there really is nothing that can compare with the deal that you get with this model.

"Gateway FX4710= good deal , happy at first?but read on" on by renem101
Pros: Fast, quiet, good deal, good looking
Cons: Won't boot at times !
Summary: I purchased a refurbished Gateway FX4710 in Jan. this year, from TigerDirect,
Me too, I ended up with this recurring problem:
? When I pressed the power switch, the fan would run (really loud), it would do one short beep, and then nothing It just sat there with the fan running. ?. ( see also previous comment).
I must say the problem is very random. The unit is fine for 30 days, then I does not want to boot several days in a row? I have to press the OFF button, tap on the wiring (the cover is always off) then press the ON button, and repeat sometimes 5 to 10 times before the CPU fan finally slow down and Windows kicks in. I?ve done countless hours of research, took the unit apart, and came to the conclusion the mobo has to be at fault.
It is a worrying situation as I?m a home teleworker = this is my bread & butter.
I have an old faithful Dell backup (slow) ?just in case the Gateway would die on me.
I have contacted the Gateway support on numerous occasions and received automated reply
(Robot answers) with the mention: If this issue is not resolved to your satisfaction, you may reopen it within the next 7 days.
Also, since this is a refurbished unit, they kept telling me I?m not the owner, not registered etc ?even after I registered multiple times and contacted them numerous time? I always have to start my story from scratch !
This unit was probably returned b/c of above problem, ...and I ended up with the LEMON !!!
Grrr?
