"Do Not Buy"on by NDiggy
Pros -Worked great for 15 days.
Cons -Only worked for 15 days.
-Best Buy won't let you return computers after 14 days.
-Ugly case; has a cheap plastic feel to it
-Extremely poor and frustrating customer support.
Summary Read the CNet review and was legitimately impressed that Gateway could make such a good computer for such a bargain price. The old adages hold true in the case of this computer:#1 You get what you pay for, and #2 If it's too good to be true, then it probably Is too good to be true.
This computer worked great for 15 days. On the morning of the 15th day the computer was completely dead and would not turn on. Took it into Best Buy and the Geeks looked at it and they couldn't find what was wrong with it. The light on the mother board came on, but the computer would not boot. I wanted to either exchange the computer for another or simply return the computer and get my money back, but was informed that unlike their other electronics, their computers only have a 14 day return limit. My only option was to send the computer to Gateway for repairs, I was told this would take a maximum of two weeks.
A week and a half later I called to check on the status of the computer and was told they had order 7 new parts and were still waiting on them. The next week they were still waiting on 1 part. The next week they had all the parts but had not finished repairing the computer. Finally, after a month of waiting (31 days on the nose) I called and found out that they were replacing 15 parts (the Best Buy Geek was as shocked as I was) in the computer (which practically constitutes a new computer) and were still not finished with the repairs. After speaking to a manager, telling him I had no confidence in the product anymore and would like a refund, I was told that he could sympathize with my frustration, but that I still couldn't get my money back.
I called my credit card company and told them what was going on. They filed a dispute with Best Buy over the charge and credited my money back to my account. Now I'm going to let the corporations duke it out over who owes who what, because I'm not going to be left holding the bill for this product.
The bottom line: The product is poorly built, which when combined with the severely limited return policies of Best Buy with regards to computers makes it impossible for me to recommend that anyone risk buying this product. I like CNet's reviews, but I really wish they could do some follow up reviews with regards to product reliability and take that into account with their reviews on products. If I'd only spent a day with this product I could see how they'd recommend it, but if they'd spent a month with the product and done some checking with customer reviews they'd probably have seen how shoddy a product it truly is.
DO NOT BUY THE GATEWAY FX6800-01e
Pros Options fair, USB port count good, hot swappable SATA good, poor internal design.
Cons Poor quality, power cables for SATA hard swap not mated at factory; rubber footpads are glued, fall off in moving the unit; lack of cooling & cooling options allow hard drives to overheat. Tech support parrot: don't open case it will void warranty
Summary Poor design and execution.
Be prepared to cut the side panel to mount an outside a fan to cool hard drives. Tech support always responds very quickly via em,ail to a support ticket. But, the response is useless, a legalese statement that if you touch anything the warranty is void. Real support is nil or next to useless. I responded they breached customer satisfaction guarantees, by not producing and assembling a quality product.
After mating he power cables myself, and asking Gateway for a credit for my squandered time (I would have taken a stick of memory or some other component as suitable compensation), the repetitive chant was that the PC is under warranty and I could send it to a repair facility to remate the cables that I mated....Swift...and dumb.
And when it came time to explain that the hard drive was overheating after I added more hard drives (remember hot swappable), it was as if I was speaking to a brick wall. There was dissolutely no comprehension.
Yup, tried phone calls besides emails and updating the ticket, and yup, they were and are useless and the folks in Asia cannot responded if it does not fit their scripts and they are always repeating every seentence.
Wow poor customer service all around and to the extreme.
Pros When it works it's fine!
Cons Crashed after 4 months - power supply - called Gateway - then won't send part like they used to - you have to send machine back to them at your expense - this is a warranty?
Summary I've bought 15-20 Gatways over the past 10 years or so and this is the last!
Pros amazing processor, back compatible xfire and SLI mother board (w/extra pci express slot. better case the XPS. lots of strage. DDR3memory and a DDR3 graphics card make gaming super smooth
Cons if i ever want to upgrade to some really honkin dual graphics cards im going to need to swap the power supply (but that wont be for a long while.)
Summary i bought this comp a few days ago and im loving it. im running left 4 dead on the highest setting with out as much as a glitch. so as far as running new games this thing can handle it...
i really wanted to buy something that i could upgrade for later and this fit the bill. with the extra PCI Express slot and the mother board capable of allowing both xfire and SLI this makes for a huge ability to upgrade down the line for fans of both ATI and Nvidea. 3 more ram ports allow you to upgrade to a large amount of ram.
for 1200 you also get pentiums brand new i7 quad core which is just blazing fast
i literally installed Left 4 Dead in 4.3 minutes
i uploaded one of my 15 song CD's into itunes in about 90 seconds
this ability to preform multiple tasks just blows me away and this computer does it with ease
my review may be a bit on the "i'm a fanboy for this rig" BUT u need to understand that my last computer was a 1.8 amd with a 256 nvidea DDR2 graphics card that could barely run WoW on low.
the next game ill be throwing in this bad boy is warhammer online, cant wait to see what it looks like.
if you want the same things i wanted get this machine (also if your thinking of buying the XPS read the reviews. alot of people have problems witht the fans being way to loud and the light not working at all)
Pros Its a good computers for gamers who dont want to dick around with building their own system. Great fps and no lag!
Cons System is not Persian cat friendly. It does not tolerate cat hair, dust, and lint so regular cleaning is a must.
Summary I've owned this computer for nearly a year now and I have been very happy with it. It plays all my little online games (WOW, Crysis, Eve, Warhammer, lol Evony) fine and graphics look great. I am able to, and often do, multi task and run both of my wow accounts, plus Eve, plus watch a movie on netflix while surfing the net with out any problems. I just started Aion and that looks great also! Only issue has been with my cat that likes to sit on top of it while I play. His long hair gets inside and it will over heat if i allow it to build up. With regular cleaning though that isnt a problem. The keyboard, mouse, and speakers it comes with suck, but dont they always?
