"Do Not Buy"
Pros: -Worked great for 15 days.
Cons: -Only worked for 15 days.
Summary: Read the CNet review and was legitimately impressed that Gateway could make such a good computer for such a bargain price. The old adages hold true in the case of this computer:#1 You get what you pay for, and #2 If it's too good to be true, then it probably Is too good to be true.
-Best Buy won't let you return computers after 14 days.
-Ugly case; has a cheap plastic feel to it
-Extremely poor and frustrating customer support.
This computer worked great for 15 days. On the morning of the 15th day the computer was completely dead and would not turn on. Took it into Best Buy and the Geeks looked at it and they couldn't find what was wrong with it. The light on the mother board came on, but the computer would not boot. I wanted to either exchange the computer for another or simply return the computer and get my money back, but was informed that unlike their other electronics, their computers only have a 14 day return limit. My only option was to send the computer to Gateway for repairs, I was told this would take a maximum of two weeks.
A week and a half later I called to check on the status of the computer and was told they had order 7 new parts and were still waiting on them. The next week they were still waiting on 1 part. The next week they had all the parts but had not finished repairing the computer. Finally, after a month of waiting (31 days on the nose) I called and found out that they were replacing 15 parts (the Best Buy Geek was as shocked as I was) in the computer (which practically constitutes a new computer) and were still not finished with the repairs. After speaking to a manager, telling him I had no confidence in the product anymore and would like a refund, I was told that he could sympathize with my frustration, but that I still couldn't get my money back.
I called my credit card company and told them what was going on. They filed a dispute with Best Buy over the charge and credited my money back to my account. Now I'm going to let the corporations duke it out over who owes who what, because I'm not going to be left holding the bill for this product.
The bottom line: The product is poorly built, which when combined with the severely limited return policies of Best Buy with regards to computers makes it impossible for me to recommend that anyone risk buying this product. I like CNet's reviews, but I really wish they could do some follow up reviews with regards to product reliability and take that into account with their reviews on products. If I'd only spent a day with this product I could see how they'd recommend it, but if they'd spent a month with the product and done some checking with customer reviews they'd probably have seen how shoddy a product it truly is.
DO NOT BUY THE GATEWAY FX6800-01e
