Pros fast, good for multi-tasking
Cons died after 2 weeks
Summary I purchased this desktop from Amazon just before Christmas. The price was right and the specs were perfect for my needs. It worked very well for 2 weeks. I was so excited that I'd made a wise decision.
It all ended one nite when I got a blue screen and it failed to reboot (disk read error). Amazon would not replace it, only return my money. I contacted Gateway. They registered it and said since it was under warranty that they would fix it. They gave me shipping information and I sent it in the next day. I received it back within one week. It worked for 2 days and again, blue screen and disk error.
They now want me to Restore to Factory Default. They are thinking software issues. All I downloaded both times were Windows updates, Firefox and Avast.
I'm really hoping to get my money back if this does not pan out.
"Nice SFF PC!"on by kathytalea
Pros Fast processor, good specs, has everything I need and looks great on my entertainment system.
Cons Few expansion slots, a little concerned about the heat.
Summary I picked up one of these little guys for $550 from CompUSA about a week ago, for use as a media PC and DVR (actually got the SX2850-01 since I preferred the 1TB harddrive and 3.0 GHz processor over the 640GB harddrive and 3.2 GHz processor found in the SX2850-33). I decided to buy the Gateway because the specs/price far outweighed what was available in the other SFF PCs like the Dell Zino. So far everything is working great. The i3 processor is fast, and Windows 7 seems adequate for running a DVR. I picked up a Hauppauge HVR-1250 TV tuner card for $50 from NewEgg, and plugged it into the vacant PCI-e x16 slot. I had considered replacing the included wireless card from the PCI-e x1 slot with the TV tuner card instead, which would free up the PCI-e x16 for a video card, but so far the on-board graphics seem fine. I'm using the HDMI port to display to a 40" Samsung LCD, and everything looks clear and crisp... except for non-HD internet content, which still looks pretty great. With the WinTV software from Hauppauge, I am up and running a basic DVR without any additional software purchases. Thanks CNET, for finding the perfect SFF PC to make my media center set-up easy!
Pros Same as CNET
Cons Same as CNET
Summary perfect substitute to nettop machine but more power and versatility. i would consider it
Pros Small, fast... I guess .. but whats the point
Cons The eject buttons are just awful and WILL break after just a few months ... not a good design and CNET has missed the boat on this issue? Its a horrible design issue .. check on-line and you will see the number of issues related to this flaw.
Summary A simple yet horrible design flaw ... not such a good looking case when I had to remove the whole front to use!
Pros Relatively small and powerful for the living room.
Cons No wireless keyboard/mouse bundle. No Blu-Ray option (yes, the website advertises it, but good luck finding the 'select model').
Summary A few easy bundling options could have made this a clear winner for the living room. Maybe next year...
