"HP has minimal hard-to-get-to phone support"
Pros: None discerned so far.
Cons: HP doesn't want to support their warranty
Summary: The system clock was way off on the brand-new CPU. I set the clock, noticed that the floppy drive icon was missing. Checked BIOS, found the floppy disabled. I enabled it and re-booted. I observed that anything remotely involving CMOS was negatively impacted: my wireless didn't work (corrupt IP/MAC) and on and on. I spent 4 reluctant hours on the phone with the HP help desk. After re-seating the lithium battery, deleting the clock software and jumping through several other irrelevant hoops (with their guidance), they told me the battery is probably defective (duh!). And they won't replace it under warranty because it's an "expendable item." Hey, HP expended it, I didn't. So, for the price of $3.00 battery, they've lost a customer. My next purchase will be a Dell (my apologies for the rant).

I prefer both HP an Dell over their competitors for good systems and sometimes good support. But if you think Dell has better support than Dell, you are in for a rude awakening. Both will occasionally offer superior support but Dell will often offer completely tanked support from overseas. I do fairly large volume of PC support and Dell is extremely inconsistant.
