    "Disappointed and Disgruntled"

    by Scuba_Steve on October 10, 2005

Pros: Ability to choose my own components

Cons: Assembler had to be stoned

Summary: I originally put together a wish list on Newegg and was going to build my own PC for my son. When I went to check out though the cost was more than I could pick one up from iBuyPower and have them assemble it for me. That was mistake #1 - worrying about price and convience over quality. I had read the reviews here on Cnet and was a little worried from the other users that were unhappy with iBuyPower, but Cnet's rating didn't match and I decided to believe Cnet instead of other users. That was mistake #2 - thinking that Cnet has all the answers instead of actual people like me who had put their hands on iBuyPower's products and experienced first hand the disappointment. Long story short, it doesn't boot up - I don't call iBuyPower because I remember all the horror stories from other users and I'm technically savvy enough to build one myself - so I pull it all apart, re-seat components, check BIOS settings, etc. They even didn't plug some items in and good God even plugged USB components into Firewire ports on the motherboard! Finally get the thing to work like it's supposed to but not after I had to re-assemble the whole thing on my kitchen table. I may as well built the whole thing from scratch like I originally intended too but was too cheap and worried about saving a little scratch. If I were a noob and rcvd this product it would probably been a nightmare getting it too a satisfactory state that a normal user could use.

Lesson's learned - 1. Cnet does not know it all or always get it right. Pay close attention to other user's experiences. 2. iBuyPower is a pitiful company to do business with - slow delivery, poorly assembled, and I'm only assuming, but probably poor tech support from what I've seen of other users reviews. 3. Build it yourself and get it done right. These companies may be able to save you some money but nobody's going to care about the assembly of your PC like you are going to. Anyone with a screwdriver and some form of intellect could do it. Pick up Maximum PC's book "Guide to Building a Dream PC" and see just how easy it is.
